Saints V Orient Post Match Reaction Thread

Exactly.

Orient were excellent in the air at the front and the back. Any Saints team in the last few years would have lost the physical battle and this match. We completely ran the first half. Unfortunately we didn't score early enough to get another before half-time and the second half was a bit nervy, albeit caused by punts in to our box rather than us being outplayed. All the same, there was not a single point in the match when I thought we would not win. It wasn't champagne but no one is every week.

Really I thought it had draw written all over it. Having said that years of supporting saints means I never fell comfortable untill the final whistle8-[

Wasn't pretty but we got the 3 points and at this stage of the season, that's all you can ask for. Lallana was first-class throughout, full credit to him. Took both his goals brilliantly well.

Today was a game that in seasons gone by, we wouldn't have won, but we dug deep and fought hard for the win; credit to the players for that. Now that's done with, there's no need to dwell on the performance, just need to focus on Charlton this coming Saturday.

We have just won 4 out of the last 5 games in 17 days, scoring 14 goals into the bargain, come from behind in 3 of them and YET people still complain!!!

We will not win every game like Huddersfield, OK that set a very high standard, but 3 points are better than none FGS!!

Poor performance today, but the win is all important.

A bit disappointed with Pardews post match comments & his substitutions. I thought Barnard was running his heart out & was offering double what Lambert was. What does Pardew do? Take him off & bring on Antonio to create a formation that worked so badly at Brighton. Whilst Puncheon & Lambert were key to the second goal, I thought the rest of the time they were pretty poor.

He then says in his post match comments that Barnard was not at his best & Puncheon was a class above. FFS Pardew, give Barnard 90 minutes & realise that even very good players like Puncheon & Lambert can have off days.

I am also totally confused by his desire to bring everyone back for corners. We dont have an outlet. He even does it when we are 3-0 up. Scowcroft had won loads in the air today so to leave Lambert marking him for their corners was ameturish. He lost him quite a few times.

I am not saying I want rid of Pardew or anything like that, but he confuses me some time with his some of his tactics & substitutions.

I thought Seabourne did well with the basics in defence & of course Lallana was outstanding.

The worst I have seen us play at home this season but at least they won!! The result is all that matters this time of the season. This team will not dominate this division next season imo.We do have the majority of the team in place however

Assuming we don't make the play offs we will still need a number of new players next season if we are going to dominate this league and to cover for injuries.I would not sign Semi as I think we can find much better in the summer. We will no doubt sign a couple more midfielders, another striker, another centre back.I expect 4/5 quality additions to our squad reading between the lines from what has been said in the press. From what I have seen in recent games I think these players will be needed next season to have an excellent chance of an automatic promotion spot.

Are Semi,Antonio,Wotton,Thomas,James etc good enough for our very ambitious chairman and chief exec? Can we get better players?Remember we have serious money to spend and clout and many players will be interested in joining us and there will be plenty of frees from the premiership and championship etc.

So you want us to grind out a result no matter what. We do that and you change the goalposts? Why not just say we should be champions league material and then you can moan all you like? Yes, that's why people dislike you - because you're not only negative but dull, very dull. Nothing inciteful from you just moaning as usual. By the way I'm not really sure why you care - you gave up on the playoffs around about the Exeter draw so surely anything closer (to the playoffs) is a result? Oh but it's you isn't it? The perennial dull one who just enjoys moaning.......

Your post is a load of b*ll*cks. I have never given up on the playoffs, for a start.

Do you really think the level of performance that ground a result out against Orient will be enough to do the same thing against Charlton and Bristol Rovers ? You obviously havent got a clue about football, then. I havent changed the goal posts at all.

FFS Alpine, you don't "grind out a result" by playing fantastic flowing football and walking all over the opposition. You do one or the other.

I can remember, with incredible clarity, you once saying that you didn't care about the "pretty little triangles" and you would rather play sh*t and win every week ala Derby 05/06.

Yes you did. You stated before the game you weren't worried about the performance just the result. Then you moan about the performance. Anything to moan about eh?

I like Seaborne in defence. He gets about and provides very wide cover. Jaidi is a rock, but rocks don't move a lot, and he risks giving away free kicks with his pushing and shoving, whereas Seaborne usually gets to the ball first.

As for Pardew's tactics, taking off a creative midfielder, even if he wasn't playing at hsi best, and replacing him with a DM was a backwards step, compounded by taking off a striker and replacing with another midfielder. In effect he replaced Barnard with Wotton so its hardly suprising the 3rd goal didn't come and the Os had opportunities to pile on the pressure towards the end.

Was anyone else impressed by Orients long throw ins? I don't know which player it was but he must be league ones version of Delap. Normally punting it out for a throw in is a safe bet for a defender under pressure but in this case it just gave Orient more chances to get it in the box.

Lichaj, Right Back, on loan from Aston Villa.

Barnard was huffing and puffing a lot but I don't remember him having a shot at goal today. Antonio at least managed a couple when he came on. Having said that I prefer Antonio on the wing as a replacement for Puncheon and Papa as a replacement for Barnard. Lambert was marked out of the game today if you listen to the Orient (assistant manager) on the BBC he said they where looking to nulify our main threat in Lambert which they did rather well. Sadly for them it left Lallanna with a bit of space to score from. The corners thing is a fair point. We have some pace so leaving one quick player up to break makes sense. I think puncheon did it once in the second half but he was brought down by a rather cynical tackle before he could do much with it.

He broke with it as opposed to being high up the pitch meaning they had to leave two back.

As we score from all positions if they double up on Lambert etc it will always leave space for others, as happened today.

It was a patchy game. It was a shaky start by us, looking very apprehensive and slow out of the blocks. They scored in the second minute having had a decent opportunity in the first 30 seconds. At about the ten minute mark, we had settled a bit and started to play attractive passing football and I felt that it was almost inevitable that we would score, given the amount of possession that we had. So it proved.

But with the loss of Jaidi, I wasn't as confident that the defence would be impregnable and following an injury to the LO player, well, two of them actually, they really started to come back into it, for a period very much the better team than us. It was only through some dogged defending and a magnificent save by Kelvin that we managed to hold on. Even when two up through Lallana, one of the few bright spots of the match, it looked as if it was eminently possible that we could throw it away.

There have been rumours I noticed on another thread that several players were out on the lash late last night. If true, it certainly looked as if several of them were suffering from the effects of something like that. If it was not an excuse that they could use, then they should buck up their ideas, as generally with one or two exceptions, they were poor. It is reasonable to expect that the Brighton game could be used as the Wembley hangover and with that out of the way as a distraction, they would be concentrating their efforts onto the remote possibility of the play-offs.

If they feel that it is not feasible to get there and have given up trying, then Pardew needs to disabuse them of that idea and kick some arses, perhaps play some fringe players who do give a damn.

Poor display but a win is a win.

If we play like that on Saturday, Charlton will turn us over. Scowcroft for them caused so many problems and I'm a bit worried about how Seaborne will cope in the next two games as he was shaky today.

Lallana was quality, a rare bright spark in the team.

Barnard must have been gutted to come off, even when he doesn't have chances he runs his socks off. I would have taken Puncheon off myself.

Schneiderlin was another who disappointed, he is probably not fully fit yet or was it the haircut?!

3 points on Saturday is massive.

Isn't he the one that missed that header in the first half? Three yards out and just inside the right-hand post it went wide of the left for a goal-kick.

A very sloppy performance that seemed to affect most of the players. They just seemed to kick the ball straight at the player standing in front of them. Schneiderlin made four poor passes in the first half alone when he was under no pressure at all. If some of them had been up late then it would explain a lot, but it would be inexcusable. Orient had quite a lot of chances and we shall never win anything if we can't keep clean sheets.

I'll take the three points but it simply won't do next season.

There's no real way of knowing. There's another 800 available when the first 100 have been sold. If you want to see anything of the game, wait for the terrace tickets. If it's raining then you'd be better of with a seat in the stand. You'll probably be dry but they are almost all 'obstructed views'.

One thing that struck me when I say the lineup today was that since January we have actually (for the first time in how many seasons) found a reliable starting XI that AP sticks to. Davis, Otsemobor, Fonte, Jaidi, Harding, Hammond, Schneiderlin, Puncheon, Lallana, Lambert and Barnard are quite clearly the favoured starters. Lots of competition for places and a few injured/out of form players to take into account, but I think having this steady starting XI from round 1 could be the difference between this and the next season...

I'm stating the obvious, yes, but sometimes it needs stating too :)

Already been treated to a great day out last week and was happy just to be there today. I appreciated our ability to win whilst playing crap, as well as Lallana's goal masterclass.

Looking forward to Charlton next week before I have to leave Saints behind again.

Poor performance by all accounts, but a good result. Sometimes it's the other way around, but right now it's the results that count so I'm happy. Still mathematically in the shout for a play off place so not giving up, but not holding out much hope either. Huddersfield are nailed on for tonight (it is Easter) and they will be over the green hill far away once again.

Have heard that several players were up late last night..............................................................

Source

Lets just say very reliable............

Then I hope your source passes on this info to someone at SFC (preferably AP himself, unless AP is your source!)

My kids first match, and they loved it!!!!!!!!!

Me - poor game, Llalana brilliant, Otsemobor very poor.

Still, should play better verses Charlton...within 8 points of playoffs for the first time this season.

Which means we can now officially blame the duck hunter - for going into administration 4 days late. :smt071

The performance was good enough to get the result in this game - happy about that, not fussed it wasnt pretty stuff.

Will it be enough against Charlton and Rovers -no, very worried about that.

Really so hard to follow ???

Yes I agree with you.

Yesterday's performance must have been affected by the conceeding of a very early goal which is unlikely to happen again.

Wehave gone behind in our last three league games but still got seven points

We started with our "best Team" yesterday and agree that it was a poor game, Lallana's goals apart. I did not think Punch had a very good game either but in saying this our goals came from his crosses.I would have preferred Papa on for Barnard, although did not feel he needed changing, and Antonio on the wing in place of Punch. I am not the manager though and we ground out a win so AP was right. We know we can play better than this,as witnessed by many games this season, and we are still in with a chance of the play offs. Keep optimistic and a good win V Charlton will cheer us all up again and we will have forgotten Leyton Orient.
