simon cox was sold..he was their ricky lambert..(joint top scorer last year i think) and have a small budget and squad compared to anyone else at the top...with a manager who has been there about the same amount of time as pardew has been at saints

 

fair play to them..if only we were that good

its worth noting that they picked up one gem from non-league for 5000k which was good bussiness. Also though they haven't bought much they've brought in a load of loans from the EPL and Celtic so prehaps not a team of league one no hopers. Also Danny wilson came in last season after Swindon sacked their last manager giving him quarter of last season and all summer to prepare for this season. Selling cox also brought 2mil into the Swindon coffers.

Well exactly, and this is doubly frustrating for me considering I have a mate who is absolutely OBSESSED with that small-town club. He has never seen anything like this in years and he is loving it considering we have always been a superior team.

 

I am also struggling to see why they are so good. They lost Cox last season, and their signings haven't exactly been emphatic. They're just an annoyingly well organised, effective team at the moment. But then they will probably get the stuffing kicked out of them next season, whether or not they are in the championship.

And yet you want us to get back to the premiership as quickly as possible!

 

It beggars belief, it really does, that some think we should be back at the promised land so quickly when we're currently struggling to compete in division 3!

 

Reality check needed for some of our more deluded fans, we are where we are, and we're gonna take time to build our way out of the mess that the previous incumbents got us into!

 

Getting upset that other teams are above us does nothing to help the situation, and everything to raise your own blood pressure :(

i work with 2 swindon fans and have the 'honour' of viewing a big montage of pictures from our two losses to them every time i sit at my desk. :(

DD that type of comment is why our fans are disliked and seen as arrogant and also why our fans are so deluded.Swindon have a solid defence, a good mobile and combatative midfield and a very good pair of strikers.

It is about time you stopped looking down on clubs and showed respect,then you would be much happier in life

I go back even further when Don Rogers took the p1ss out of Arsenal...they were a decent side then.

 

They had some really good players around that time Mike Summerbee and Ernie Hunt if I remember

Unless your a fan of a top four club in the EPL you have to make the most of the good times becuase they are unlikely to last long for most clubs. There is always a bigger club ready to take your best players or a good manager of your hands and the good times can disapper as quickly as they came. Swindon fans should enjoy it fair play to them.

It's this exact attitude that every fan in league one, and I include myself in that, completely despises.

Like it or not, we are at this level. Swindon are considered a good side by our perspective. Move on from 2003 and f*cking get over it.

Bit OTT there old chap.

 

I think it is more about the fact that despite all the advatages we have we are a fair way behind them even if you add back the ten points.

They got lucky with the gamble on Austin. If he had been sh*t, as most non-league gambles turn out to be, they would be just outside the play-offs now.

Well let's hope there aren't another two clubs who "get lucky" next season while a few more of the owner's millions are being spent.

Slightly tounge in cheek but you could argue as we have actually won something this year and they haven't we are actually doing better than them;).

I think their midfielder McGovern is very good, he's all-action and played very well against us both home ans away this season. He's the sort of player we really lack, i.e. having a real presence in midfield.

 

I'm utterly staggered by Swindon's success, good luck to them, I would have preferred Leeds to go up to make it easier for us next season though.

Can't believe Swindon are getting such a slagging by some on here

 

They've beaten us and Leeds twice this season and they thoroughly deserve to be where they are

 

At Christmans I tipped them for automatic and everybody laughed. Still not sure they'll make that.. but i suspect it will come down to their last game of the season at the Den

 

Decent manager..... who usually gets his tactics spot one... with some hard working players

Well apparently no one is allowed to be better than us (except prehaps Norwich and Leeds becuase they're big clubs)

 

I think this sums up why some think it's a problem taken from the OP

its really so simple. AP has the resources that he has. We have no control over who is in L next year.

 

Promotion next year will be down to us. If we are good enough, and get 2 points per game, we will go up. And really, unless something dramatic happens, we have an excellent chance, as we have shown over the last 25 league games.

Their season really got going when Charlie Austin came into the frame. Before this they were struggling for goals and Paytner who has since scored ****loads was in the reserves at the begining of the season.

 

This lad is a massive reason they are where they are, and the fustrating thing is he was playing right on our doorstep in the wessex league, yet we didn't know nothing of him. He has to be close to being the signing of the season in any league - 50k and he's got 17 goals and didn't make his debut until oct/nov - will be worth at least a million now.

 

As others have said they are the best side we've played - organised, committed and efficient so fair play to them I say.

Danny Wilson is a great manager and one of football's nicest characters. The league doesn't lie. Swindon have been well organised all season and Wilson has done a superb job, proving that you don't have to spend millions to produce an effective 'team'.

 

Anyone who thinks we will walk this league next season could be in for a shock. Just because we have a big budget, it doesn't mean we are going to run away with the league. There will be other teams like us who will strengthen by spending and like Swindon, there will be one of two other suprise outfits who are well organised and have a great team ethic, which will prove to be worth its weight in gold.

Here you go again then DD, what-if, what-if what-if!! Seriously, would you have appointed Danny Wilson if you were Nicola Cortese?

 

Alan Pardew is doing a decent job. I think we are averaging 2 points per game now if you look at our more recent form (i.e. since about xmas and maybe before that even).

 

The question you need to ask is when we have spent money, have we spent it well?

 

Lambert? Yes, Barnard? Yes Fonte? Yes Hammond? Yes Puncheon? Probably.

 

Also, he is spending money on players that are young and can still improve further as well as trying to equip us with those that could perform at CCC level as well.

 

Why can our fans not accept we are doing a good rebuilding job and just congratulate teams that are probably punching above their weight. I think Swindon are decent but they are not any better than us because they won 1-0 twice. If we had them on a level playing field next season I think we would finish above them. If we had any sort of luck before half time at St Marys they would have been buried so thats the rub in football.

He'll be OK in the Championship but I think League 1 football goes under his radar a bit sometimes.

For League 1 I'd take Wilson or Jackett over Pardew any time...but now that he's here I guess he'd better get on with it.

 

Of course he knows what he is doing .... he has got Reading out of this league before!

they have added to the squad fantastically.

 

Johnathan Douglas, ex leeds, is arguably one of the best CM's in this league and the signing of the season on a free. I'd have him in our midfield any day of the week.

 

Austin is the hottest prospect outside of the PL, the guy is prolific. Add to that - billy paynter, who's always scored goals and the pace they have down the flanks...they'll always cause problems.

I had written out a big, long, angry post last night in reply to this thread, and then I realised that that's what TDD set out to trigger. :D

I will say though that I would be very happy if Swindon go up in place of somebody like Leeds or Charlton, as some of the fans at this level deserve a bit of a reality check, ours included.

In the context of league one clubs we are so are Norwich. In the wider football league I agree we are not.

Same here, how disrespectful, the table does'nt bloody lie, they are the better team for now, they beat us TWICE so are'nt up there on bleeding merrit.

They're in good form. If you want your team to be in form, then this is the time of the season to do it. They beat us 1-0 at St Mary's, with our home form as good as it is, and deserve to be where they are on merit. I still think Millwall will sneak the auto spot though.

 

If we do make the play-offs, they're going to be bloody tough this season.
