Pat from Poole Posted 3 April, 2010 Posted 3 April, 2010 I have missed two home games this season ,Millwall because i was on holiday and MK Dons in the league, due to having a training day with my work. I just wondered what everyone elses reasons were for not going to games. Married with two kids, my wife works Saturdays. Wembley was my 10th game of the season, of which 5 have been home games, so I don't think I've done too bad. I used to be an uber-fan once, I missed two away games in the Souness season, but then I was single then. I would suggest to you that a heck of a lot of Saints fans at Wembley last week have got families and cannot get to that many games, they're still Saints fans even if they don't go to every game. I'm guessing by your stance that you are not in that situation.

I have been a Saints supporter for 49 years (my first nmatch was away to Leyton Orient at the age of 6) and a ST holder from the age of 13 (I lived in Kent until I was 37). From the time I was able to afford it, I went to all the away games as well and then I met my missus. We both went to all the away games until we got married, and I went to them all until my first child was born, at which time we were running a pub. Nowadays I go to all the home matches and as many away matches as I can justify. I have four children and maybe there are reasons that mean many people like me cannot make many away matches. Does that make me less of a fan? I would appreciate any sensible comments...

I try to make the odd game close by either locations (parents still in Plymouth... not sunk delldays sub yet .... ) But sod it devonports gun crew better than pompeys!!!!

I used to be one of those, due to dad being season ticket holder... I know, I feel ashamed, as its only around $2000 and a week away from home to catch all of the matches. I guess i'm not wanted anymore then.

John B Posted 4 April, 2010 Posted 4 April, 2010 I have been watching Saints since August 1962 when my parents returned to Southampton but followed the team before that. I left Southampton in 1964 to go to Uni in London but returned to Southampton regularly to watch them and was a season ticket holder for the a year in the 70s. Watched them at all the London Grounds - Ealing to Crystal Palace is not easy midweek by Public Transport and had an awful experience at Watford in the League Cup when 4 1 up from the first leg we got well and truly thrashed. Now retired and living in Berkshire I follow them on the Interenet and still go to watch a few times a season last game I saw was against Hartlepool I now enjoy watching teams that I have never seen before but I am not sure whether MK Dons counts as I remember going to Plough Lane and seeing Boyer score a goal in a Cup game

Sidney Fudpucker the 3rd Posted 4 April, 2010 Posted 4 April, 2010 I live in Chester so it's a 500 mile round trip for a home game. The ever rising price of fuel doesn't help when added to the price of a ticket and spends for the day. I also work most Saturday's, so that makes things difficult.

A home game is a 200 mile round trip, I work long hours during the week and have a young family so being an "uber fan" isn't really an option. This however doesn't mean I'm not a true fan - our results dictate my mood for the rest of the weekend and even at 4-0 up last weekend I still didn't feel comfortable. All those ****s who go on about 50k at wembley and less than 20k at SMS should drag their yokel heads out of their backsides and realise that for some of us we simply can't go every week. And yes I did try and get tickets for wembley but couldn't - that must make me a truly dreadful fan of the club! Oh yes, I will be at SMS tomorrow with my son for his first game.

However, it was really great to see so many of the lads from way back when at Baker Street last weekend. My, how we have aged! The sudden flood of memories of when we were uberfans - was almost a Tijuana Tim moment. So many of us with our kids (ranging from 23 down to about 5) all in their shirts and all singing the RLSGM song...... Being treated with a degree of contempt from some, watching "terrified tourists" faced with "Horrid football hooligans" trying to squeeze through the queue of "old farts" waiting for the pub to open. Nowhere to have a pee, watered down beers, just bloody marvellous. Being moaned at by ticket collectors for being rowdy - hell, that was only the Zimmerframes being rattled.... Oh and of course Courage Best at only 2.05 a pint in Baker Street & Rudlles Country 1.95 a pint in Leicester Square.... Ah cheap beer, no wonder we used to drink so much of it. You lucky people able to go each or most weeks! Make the most of these days. Sooner or later life comes along and makes it damned hard to keep doing it.

The reason I can't go to more games? Shiftwork, the biggest social life killer that I have ever experienced.

This year I've missed a few since the turn of the year once it became obvious that we would not get near the play-offs and we had nothing to play for. Not sure about tomorrow after yet another dismal performance at Brighton and (I'm still raging over) the crap tickets I was given for Wembley. Even 'though I love Saints I'm not sure about this particular set of Saints, who don't float my boat enough to ensure I'll never miss a game. There just isn't enough home town passion about them as there was in the past; I miss a Channon, Le Tiss, Paine type of hero - they are the people who got me there every week rain or shine.

Whilst I am sure that not all of them are under 25, single, no kids, living within the city, the tone and style of their posts would indicate this profile to be the most prevalent. If attendance is a key guide I am a plastic only 3 games this season, despite over 45 years of support behind me. Why so few visits, I have a round trip of 160 miles to home games, I have family who don’t all share my passion and I also enjoy the egg chasing game and am a season ticket holder at Bath (I missed Saturdays top of the table game to support my football club in its hour of need) I took my eight year old, his 8th game, who said on Saturday when I explained the problems we have, "they can have all my money", he hasn’t taken his new shirt off since Saturday. He is of course currently a plastic, but watch out the self appointed fan police, in 10 years time he will be in the Northam setting the rules for the married over 35’s with kids who live outside the city and don’t quite share his youthful and admirable passion for our fantastic club, you never know some of you may have grown up by then and will be one of his targets." pap Posted 5 April, 2010 Posted 5 April, 2010 Geography and kids. Rarely in Southampton these days. I have two kids who seem to eat cash. Can't afford to go to every game. Haven't been to a home game for years. However, I do go to away games that are up this way.

I have the cash to go to either the Leyton Orient game today or the Charlton game next week. The Charlton game looks better so I'll be doing that. To be honest with you I wouldn't want to go to every home and away game without fail even if I did have the cash, there is more to my life than just football.
