The Kraken Posted 1 April, 2010 Posted 1 April, 2010 Jesus; 9 pages devoted to a complete non-issue. I had to make do with watching the game on Sky (as I'm in France skiing). If anything the very light booing was taken very well by the commentators, as it came in the middle of a conversation between them about how Cortese may be being hasty by his criticism of Pardew; how footballing fortunes don't just immediately turn when you throw money at the problem; and how the criticism of the boss and the side could very easily be taken as a negative, as in the case of Sullivan at West Ham. Rather than the small amount of booing being seen as lack of support of the chairman, given the context it came across as support for Pardew, in that the fans think he's currently a very good job.
INFLUENCED.COM Posted 1 April, 2010 Posted 1 April, 2010 If Cortese was booed then he does need to have a rethink about his approach to PR. We are yet to hear of the reasoning behind the booing, is it because of recycled articles which highlight the FACT we have thrown points away at times this season ? I have yet to see or read anything over critical of AP by NC published, I'm sure many have heard about him trying to condense 5 years into 3 for personal gain but other than that rumour he has said and done little wrong publically imo, pr is over rated imo, be as arrogant as you like in the boardroom if it leads to more success for our club because ultimately that is what we as fans want, right ?
Village Saint Posted 1 April, 2010 Posted 1 April, 2010 Because they're booing him because of stuff almost entirely made up by the media. That's pretty embarrassing from our own fans. No they are not. They are booing him because of his arrogance over both the training ground and Pardew issues. It is his behaviour that has been embarassing. It is pretty obvious from all the body language that Pardew is very very unhappy indeed and if he got another decent offer I am sure he would be off straight away. Cortese is very new to this job and to football and a little bit of a reminder from the fans that he should get his feet on the ground seems to me a very sensible idea. Pardew has build a side which, if it doesn't win the playoffs this year, ought to go up automatically next. I think we will all settle for that rather than booting him out in June; getting a new manager in who will want to change everrything around; build his own team etc. Surely the last thing we need.
INFLUENCED.COM Posted 1 April, 2010 Posted 1 April, 2010 No they are not. They are booing him because of his arrogance Do you know that for sure ? were you one of those booing ?

Rather than the small amount of booing being seen as lack of support of the chairman, given the context it came across as support for Pardew, in that the fans think he's currently a very good job. Surely the fact that it has spread over 9 pages shows that it is an issue. Whether he was booed or not, the reaction here shows that plenty of people can see reasons for a booing. Pardew has the support of a large section of the fan base and has done well for us this season. Cortese has hardly been fulsome in his praise. In fact if anything he has not been very supportive and have been a bit hyper critical. He has shown that he thinks that splashing a few bob should guarantee success, and it doesn't. There is a lot of hard work to be done on the training ground and more players need to come in. We are far from the finished article for an automatic promotion place next season which is no fault of Pardews. These things take time unless you come down and play with pretty much the team you had the previous season. Pardew, like Burley, has to build from scratch and that is not an exact science, no matter what those posters here with no patience would have us believe. Give him time, that goes for Cortese as well as some of the impatient fans. Edited 1 April, 2010 by sadoldgit
Wes Tender Posted 1 April, 2010 Posted 1 April, 2010 Do you know that for sure ? were you one of those booing ? Exactly. How he can make this assumption (for that is all it can be when there are so many different opinions as to what the cause of the booing even was) is beyond me. If he has any inside information to back up his assertion, let him publish it here. Otherwise, he is just an ordinary fan with strictly his own opinion, which has no more validity or basis than anybody else's.
Wes Tender Posted 1 April, 2010 Posted 1 April, 2010 . It is pretty obvious from all the body language that Pardew is very very unhappy indeed and if he got another decent offer I am sure he would be off straight away. . Qualified psychologist are we?

I didn't even notice him being booed but if he was I can only assume it's to do with The Echo thing and what Samual wrote. The Echo thing was stupid and would do nothing but make him less popular. And you obviously have not read the Samual piece if you havn't read anything critical on Cortese.
INFLUENCED.COM Posted 1 April, 2010 Posted 1 April, 2010 I didn't even notice him being booed but if he was I can only assume it's to do with The Echo thing and what Samual wrote. The Echo thing was stupid and would do nothing but make him less popular. And you obviously have not read the Samual piece if you havn't read anything critical on Cortese. I would not assume that the Echo has such support and I read the article but you have not read my post correctly. I posted "I have yet to see or read anything over critical of AP by NC published" Samuals article stunk of ulterior motive and was clearly prompted, Chairman of teams in the third tier of English Football do not warrant the column inches he gave(especially with all that is going on down the road and financially within the EPL).
Joensuu Posted 1 April, 2010 Posted 1 April, 2010 I like many others heard no evidence of boos aimed at Cortese. I also feel strongly that Cortese hasn't done anything worthy of having boos directed towards him. What many percieve to be arrogance, I see as determination. He wants to drive Saints forward, and I think the vast majorty of fans want exactly the same thing. His alleged 'tiff' with Pardew has more do with the local rag chucking away their rattle (and the nationals catching a non-story on the grapevine), than it has to do with any real disagreement. Pardew knows the score, he knows the ambition, and he knows the JPT or not, his target was to try to reach the playoffs. I think this means trying to reach 76 points (which in a normal year would see us finish sixth). What Cortese says in public, and what he says to Pardew in private are two different things. Cortese almost certainly sees that Pardew is doing okay, he has not underperformed significantly, nor has he overperformed. Pardew will almost certainly get the full 18 months he has been promised (unless he looses say five of the remaining games, or the first five of next season). Less than 65pts this season, and I'm sure some questions will be asked. 76pts is the target. IMO Cortese has balanced his public statements very well so far, ambitious, honest and direct.

I don't think the Echo has great "support" as such but I expect most of it's readers are Saints fans and enjoy reading about Saints. Plus they are a struggling Southampton company which employs many Southampton people. I agree with all you say about the Samual article but fact is, much of what he said rang true and Cortese opening his mouth gave Samual the license to write what he did. There is nothing wrong with what Cortese said but I can see why some people could see it as arrogant considering Cortese has only been in the industry 5 mins. Also just because what you say is right, doesn't mean it's right to say it in the media. Cortese is doing a good job, but IF he was booed then he must be doing something wrong PR wise.
CB Fry Posted 1 April, 2010 Posted 1 April, 2010 And perhaps Mr "I'm considerably smarter and more intelligent than you" you could explain how any of my comments can be construde as me being better than anyone else? I've simply put my opinion across, I've not dressed it up as fact... just my opinion. Still it's good to see that your dislike of me still clouds your judgement, interesting to see how you leapt at the the "If you watched the game on sky (as you obviously did)" and took it as being a comment of you not being at the game. It wasn't, but don't let that stop you trying. Part of this debate is how the crowds reaction to Cortese was viewed by others on tv... I take it you have watched it on tv? Well spotted you retard.... If you have half a brain, and were reading my posts rather than reacting to them as Disgruntled of Chandlers Ford, you'd see that I have stated on numerous occasions, that there were boos.... Just not on the scale you seem to seem to hysterically pontificating about. Part of this whole debate is aimed at how the crowd reaction was precived on tv. Can you not understand that or are you too obsessed with having a dig that you can't see that??? As I stated, and you ignored, part of the BBC commentary harped on about perceived boos from the crowd. All they were, on tv, was the sudden silence after the cheers for Leibherr. As I said, and you ignored, it was more a case of "Yayyy..... oh" more than a concentrated section of the crowd booing. Later on, at the end of the game it became more pantomime than anything else when Cortese came on the screen. It's utterly hilarious that you, of all people can accuse anyone of being arrogant. It's like me criticising people for being bald. But above all it shows a breathtaking lack of self awareness as you're probably one of the most arrogant posters on here... no mirrors in your house then? Again, if you have a problem with me, say it to my face. This constant sniping and *****ing, apart from being childish, is also rather pathetic. If you have a problem. I drink at the Saints Social club before and after the game. You think I'm a ****? I'm not going to lose any sleep that some noddy from the net wants to have a pop, but at least have the balls to say it to my face. Or are more the type to have a dig from a distance? I think I know exactly what type you are.... Oh, and for the record, I don't give a ****ing feck who booed and who didn't. Get a frigging life... Oh and as an aside, it's amazing how after the most amazing weekend in the last 30 years you can still argue, ***** and snipe about complete and utter boll locks... I was more interested in enjoying the game and looking forward to the next 30 years. You're obviously more interested in fake arguments on the 'tinterenet... FFS, get a life.... That's a awfully long messageboard post for someone who "doesn't give a ****ing feck who booed" and closes it with "FFS Get a Life". God knows what "scale" of booing you seem to think I am "pontificating" about. All I've ever said is a few fans booed and you could hear it. On the day, in the ground I'd forgotten about it seconds after we all had a laugh about it in the moment. I'd call your "it was silence misconstrued as booing" as "pontificating" personally, but as you said it and you're superdooper fan you must be right. This thread is only amusing because of the lengths people are going to pretend something didn't happen when it did, especially people who then say they couldn't give a "***ing feck" about it. It seems you do, dear. I'm sorry you won't ever see me in the Saints Social Club, but do have a pint of anorak on me.

Also just because what you say is right, doesn't mean it's right to say it in the media. Cortese is doing a good job, but IF he was booed then he must be doing something wrong PR wise. I am acutely aware of the struggles that exist for companies as no doubt the Editor was when he decided to 'risk' falling out with NC. Of course but alot is wrong with the industry not unlike the one he left to come here. I agree in principle with that statement but if it is the blindingly obvious is it so wrong to comment on it ? If they booed based on what they here or read from those that have an agenda then that is wrong, clearly they were not amongst the fortunate ones to have been handed a coffee early morning by NC whilst queuing for tickets.
sadoldgit Posted 1 April, 2010 Posted 1 April, 2010 Blimey, if all you have to do to win people over is to give them a coffee whilst they queue than Max Clifford would have been out of business years ago! The problem Mr Cortese has right now is of his own making. Yep the media have drummed it up but the facts are simple. He did throw his toys out of the pram over the Echo story and he has not been 100% supportive of Pardew in public no matter what has been said behind closed doors. He could have made both things go away by holding an olive branch out to the Echo and by stating publically that he is pleased with Pardew's work. As far as I can see hehas done neither. I don't begrudge him his arrogance- goodness knows we have had enough arrogant CEOs over the past few years - but I do hope that he learns about positive PR and quickly. Pardew will not be short of job offers and if he doesn't feel he has the confidence of his boss I can see him leaving for a club where he will feel supported. LIke others I did feel that his demour was a little odd at Wembley. It was almost like he was saying take a look around you and see what I have delivered this season. THis far outweighs some poor results against Brighton and Tranmere doesn't it? All conjecture of course but I don't think I am alone in thinking that Cortese expects too much too soon and might make the mistake of ditching a decent manager because (like many posters here) he thinks the grass is greener someone else. There is an old saying abourt learning to walk before you can run. It is all vey well to dream of being a force in the Prem and moving to a bigger ground, but we have to get out of two divisions first and that will take time and patience.
Blandford saint Posted 1 April, 2010 Posted 1 April, 2010 If I hadn't read (some) of this thread I would never have know that NC was supposed to have been booed. We were sat just in front of MLT and the Sky media box and didn't hear a thing. At least our seasts weren't too far back so I could actually watch the match rather than the big screen. Problem is now people are trying to read every little nuance and expression from AP and NC, putting 2 + 2 together and coming up with 5.

JustMike Posted 1 April, 2010 Posted 1 April, 2010 jesus!! 9 whole pages of BS on a complete non-issue! It was light-hearted booing because he didnt look at the screen and wave / smile (the 1st time). Why is there not a thread entitled "cheering Cortese" because thats exactly what happened just b4 the end of the game when the screen showed him and ML!

Daren W Posted 2 April, 2010 Posted 2 April, 2010 (edited) Why do you bother posting on here? Every time I see a 'contribution' from you on any topic it degenerates into abuse..... Do you just like arguing? Tag, and in comes in the other one... Again, another poster with no sense of self awareness... Can some one please explain to me how I'm not allowed an opinion without the likes of you and CB Fry writing it off as me being "arrogant" or a "superfan"? Sometime I wish to god I'd never started Beautiful South as it seems every word I utter is written off, ironically by posters who just ooze arrogance and a "I know better than you" attitude. Am I not allowed an opinion now? FFS, my posts on this whole dumb ass debate are no different to several other posters and yet somehow I'm "arrogant" and "wrong" they escape without so much as comment. Sorry if replying to C B Frys abusive post aimed at me offends you. Strange how he can be rude and offensive and you say nothing, I reply and I'm abusive... How odd... For what it's worth if someone's rude and offensive to me then they'll get get rudeness and abuse back and I make no apologies for it. I'm sick and tired of people hiding behind their PC screens posting insults and abuse and then getting all prissy when they get a reply they don't like... Edited 2 April, 2010 by Daren W

Alain Perrin Posted 4 April, 2010 Posted 4 April, 2010 I think the booing is understandable, but not for the reasons you are getting irate about. It is quite obvious that Cortese is Alpine_Saint. Let's look at the facts: - Veiled criticism of Pardew at every opportunity. - They both have unrealistic expectations - Austria / Switzerland - what's the difference - 'Alpine_Saint' knows everything about how the team played (even though he's not there - the only explanation is that his alter ego Cortese was watching). Q.E.D. - Alpine_Saint is Cortese. That's why I was booing.....

But stopping prentending that I am saying things that I am not. Frankly I would be "f**king delighted" if you walked away and took your negativity and poisoned agendas with you. Feel free to quote me on that. THis is precisely what you do with other people's write ups of matches. You read the bits that you think fit in with your own negative agenda, run them through the Alpine filter and spout of a pile of bile and rubbish back out. Give it a rest mate. You accuse me of stalking you but you are all over anything I post like a nasty rash. Do us both a favour and put me on ignore. I have tried doing it to you but because so many people pulll your posts apart they are all over everything I read. Just so as there are no futher misunderstandings... 1. I DO NOT want Lowe back. 2. I think there are a lot of double standards (from the likes of you) about Mr Cortese but I have never said that I want him out of the club - just that I hope that he modifies some of his behaviour we have seen so far. Two very different things. 3. The only "negative" thing I have said about our delighful owner is that I think he looks like a bit part actor from Dad's Army as he reminds me of Godfrey. Hardly hoping that he packs up and leaves is it?
JackFrost Posted 4 April, 2010 Posted 4 April, 2010 it clearly did you obviously weren't at the game then
Dalek2003 Posted 4 April, 2010 Posted 4 April, 2010 That's a awfully long messageboard post for someone who "doesn't give a ****ing feck who booed" and closes it with "FFS Get a Life". CBFRY, for all our sake keep out of the Saints Social Club, as most of us don't want to hear your arrogant droning ons.
Thedelldays Posted 4 April, 2010 Author Posted 4 April, 2010 you obviously weren't at the game then plenty of people here say it was clearly pointed at NC why are you ando others desperate to pretend it never happened..?
JackFrost Posted 4 April, 2010 Posted 4 April, 2010 plenty of people here say it was clearly pointed at NC why are you ando others desperate to pretend it never happened..? because 95% of the fans were silent when Cortese appeared on the screen, and a handful of the crowd booed the Carlisle fans for not continuing the Mexican wave. why are you ando others desperate to pretend it is even an issue..?

Um Bongo Posted 4 April, 2010 Posted 4 April, 2010 when others have said that the boos where heard (and questioned by others) waaay before the mexican wave happened.. unless, they are lying..? Some people will say it was booing at Cortese. Others will say it was for the mexican wave. Some will say they never even heard it. Funnily enough, that's people's opinion. Why is it such an issue? If people want to boo, let them boo. If the boo's were aimed at Cortese, I'm sure he left the game crying and running home to his mummy because some grown ups booed him when he appeared on the big screen.
Fan The Flames Posted 4 April, 2010 Posted 4 April, 2010 I heard booing directed at NC, a whole half before the Mexican wave booing, it was perpetrated by ******s.
chrisobee Posted 4 April, 2010 Posted 4 April, 2010 This is rather like the "Crossroads" of TSF, a rubbish soap that just goes around in circles and doesn't seem to want to end !
Thedelldays Posted 4 April, 2010 Author Posted 4 April, 2010 There were a few boos, but also quite a few more cheers. I heard a few boos in 538, very disappointed in the fans considering the work that he's put into this club. He's a very ambitious bloke, so naturally he'll want to get the best results and put pressure on the manager and players, that's just how he does things. The media have cottoned onto that and made it look like he's trying to force Pardew out of the club, when it was ML and NC who appointed him at the start of the season and said he was here for the long term. Did notice he wasn't looking very happy though, and neither was Pardew considering he'd just won a cup. There were people behind me (block 120) who cheered when Liebherr came on the screen and then booed when Cortese came on. It's a shame they don't realise that without Cortese, we wouldn't have Liebherr. I was in block 241 and there was definitely booing Yup, definitely booing. I was in block 533 in the 'gods', there was lots of booing. Lots of cheers too though. Not impressed by the boo's at all!! It happend before the game, ML was on screen and there was a huge cheer, then NC appeared on screen followed by lots of ridiculas, pathetic booing... I wouldn't ordinarily stick up for big stupid delldays but on this occasion he is right, there was a fair bit of booing going on around me when he came on the screen. I hope it was people getting wires crossed or something, was lame to the max. The booing I heard happened before kick off, waaaaaaaaaaay before Mexican waves got going. Mark it in your diary; 28th March 2010, delldays was right about something. Not wanting to ruin a great day and one i'll not forget for along time, but........ YES there were boo's when Cortese appeared on the big screen and NO i don't think it was a co-incidence and related to anything else.....TBH i was disgusted that a section of our fans obviously believe everything they read in the garbage tabloids or read far too much into what Cortese has really said......Both Cortese and our Swiss owner deserve all the praise for digging our proud club out of the hell hole they found it in. Pardew has done wonders and created an exciting team that will have more good days than bad and i for one am mighty proud tonight to be a Saints fan. It happend! It really did! There were plenty of boo's. Though its fair to say plenty of cheers too... It happend before the game about an hour before the mexican wave... It happend before that and the mexican wave... Why are people having such a hard time believing this!! It happend, it was 50/50 but there were boo's mixed in among the cheers for NC. Absoulute, 100% fact... NC was booed when first shown on the big screen. I heard it clearly in block 235. When he appeared later he wasn't booed. Mexican waves suck. We almost scored during one and I bet thousands doing it and watching those do it would have missed the goal. heard some booing in block 529 when he first came up....... I think it was centred around the south west corner. Loud and clear in block 533... nope, the boos were from whole end rather than a small section of the ground. That said it was only a small percentage of people. Not sure why people are bothering to say they didn't hear it, it happened, that ios all that matters and shows how a large amount of people don't like him. it happened. It was pathetic. Definitely boos in 140! Including this idiot couple behind me calling cortese a ****ing ****** and screaming it everytime he came on screen. In the end we turned round and told them to shut up and asked why he was and they replied "he just is" and we said well to be honest hes responsible for ML getting involved, hes brought good players to the club, a good manager and we've just won the JPT. To which they said he doesnt care about football only business. Well frankly hes always over here and is passionate so must do a little and secondly i couldnt give two if he doesnt, hes running it well, we're financially safe unlike most, would you rather be palace, bmth, pompey? If this is how well we do when we run it like a business long may it continue. If lambert doesnt provide and doesnt score pardew will be on his back, in the same way if pardew doesnt provide and we dont win cortese should be rightly on his back! Correct. It was loud and clear in block 134. Yeah. Definately 'Boos' for Cortese in block 524. Bit shocked really - only down point on a brilliant day. It happened when the ten other people on this thread said it happened. Pre match - Markus on screen - cheers, moved to Nicola - Boos. It happened. Not alledged, nothing to do with Mahwinney or Mexican waves. It happened, pretty clear all round the ground. just a small selection old soppy....unless, they are all lying..?
JackFrost Posted 4 April, 2010 Posted 4 April, 2010 (edited) just a small selection old soppy....unless, they are all lying..? I personally didn't hear it. Ok so a section of the fans directed boos at Cortese. So what? Why do you think it is such an issue? If it had been all the fans in unison then there might just be an issue, fact is it was far from that. Edited 4 April, 2010 by JackFrost
