TopGun Posted 23 September, 2008 Share Posted 23 September, 2008 Thinking of taking an autumn break to NY and wondering which airline to fly as most seem similarly priced from Heathrow/Gatwick or Manchester. Anyone have good or bad experiences of airlines on that route?
Scummer Posted 23 September, 2008 Share Posted 23 September, 2008 Virgin. That's not an insult by the way.

stevegrant Posted 23 September, 2008 Share Posted 23 September, 2008 Service-wise, Virgin is almost certainly the best. Unfortunately, you'll pay a premium for it. I've never had a problem with BA, and they've got a sale on at the moment (finishes tonight, so you'll have to be quick!). I've just had a quick look and you can get a return from Heathrow to JFK for £298.60, which I'd say is pretty decent.
dubai_phil Posted 23 September, 2008 Share Posted 23 September, 2008 Virgin or BA mate. Did AA a few years ago and it was ....... Virgin was funky and the hosties were fun, BA seem to have reached a nadir in their food and interest in serving you, but any flight in cattle class is a good one as long as it lands
mdearlove Posted 23 September, 2008 Share Posted 23 September, 2008 yep - Virgin first, BA second. US airlines are on the whole pretty crap and the cabin crew are usually old hags.
TopGun Posted 23 September, 2008 Author Share Posted 23 September, 2008 Looking like Virgin then. Last time I flew with them from Manchester though the plane was pretty ancient and didn't have very good inflight entertainment but I suppose that's fairly trivial. BA have been revamping their Business Class cabins and at the same time upgrading their entertainment systems. i went to Miami with them in July, same old squished Jumbo, nothing I could eat as they forgot my special meal but there was plenty of music & movies to watch. Virgin's entertainment is probably about 5% worse than the new BA stuff but BA don't have it on every plane. If you want entertainment and edible food then take a no thrills to Hamburg and fly Emirates (they do Germany-JFK)

They advertise their new service but you have to be very lucky to actually be on a plane with it. Worst business class seat I have ever had to fly - and I fly a lot. Will probably use them again once they have the A380 but until then - no chance. Dubai lounges are shocking too.
PES Posted 23 September, 2008 Share Posted 23 September, 2008 I've flown Air India and Kuwait Air to New york, Both excellent. I got my Air India Flights in 2000 for £99 At the time a special offer courtesy of the Daily Star! You just don't get bargains like that anymore! Junction 9 Posted 23 September, 2008 Share Posted 23 September, 2008 The time I went I flew with United and was very impressed. The easiest check in (both ends) I've ever experienced and the flight service was excellent. Heathrow - JFK by the way.
Dog Posted 23 September, 2008 Share Posted 23 September, 2008 I would go PanAm, however Air Jamaica take some beating.

Virgin are quality, flew from Heathrow to JFK in summer 2005 and it was very comfortable and good entertainment system. Do not under any circumstances fly with US Airways though! red&white4life Posted 25 September, 2008 Share Posted 25 September, 2008 Virgin too have the newer type of "watch what you like when you like" entertainment system on some of their planes. It's pot luck as to which system you get. I fly Virgin every time, tried BA and didn't have a good experience at all, crap plane/food/service and check in. Col. Arizona Posted 25 September, 2008 Share Posted 25 September, 2008 Virgin use the old A340, -300 series aircraft on their LHR-JFK route. Virgin have 6 of them, all of which have personal TVs, but only one has the video on demand service found in the newer -600 aircraft. HTH.
SimonRichards Posted 25 September, 2008 Share Posted 25 September, 2008 I flew American Airlines heathrow to JFK a few years back. We got upgraded to business class.
