St Landrew Posted 22 September, 2008 Share Posted 22 September, 2008 Forgot to mention this yesterday [Monday] evening, but did anyone see the Red Arrows fly over Southampton during the afternoon..? I was working on a couple of items on my Audi 80S to get it up to scratch for sale, when the diamond formation flashed past at a very low altitude. As usual, in the case with exciting aircraft, I then spent the next hour with one eye on the sky. I should be annoyed at their flagrant use of fuel these days, but they've never failed to impress this lad as far back as I can remember, when they used the Folland Gnat as their display aircraft. Whilst at Lepe on Saturday morning they flew over twice. They also were close enough to be heard in Eastleigh early on Sunday afternoon. Along with that characteristic 'merlin' growl of a Spitfire and another, unseen (probably a Lancaster), aircraft.

Baj Posted 23 September, 2008 Share Posted 23 September, 2008 I saw the Spitfire flying overhead when I was walking home from the King Alfred after the game on Saturday. Was there some sort of special occasion? Air show in Bournemouth I think, my parents took our kids to see it. If you live in Eastleigh you pretty much see the Spitfires every weekend through the summer as some are based here and fly direct to airshows and back again. Almost a shame that I've become accustomed to seeing them now, such beautiful machines.

Um Bongo Posted 23 September, 2008 Share Posted 23 September, 2008 I believe they were at Hiltingbury Rec (Chantlers Ford) show or something. Saw something in the Echo about it. As for the Lancaster, Flew over Hedge End at no more then 2000 feet. Was an awesome sight.

So glad they got one flying again, used to go regularly to Fairford/Boscombe Down/Middle Wallop airshows. Being underneath the Vulcan when it did it's steep climb away always cost a fortune on going to the dentist as the noise and vibrations caused everyone's fillings to drop out. Was lucky enough one year at Fairford to get a photo of a Lancaster lining up on the runway alongside a taxing American Stealth fighter. Still hangs on my wall The Red Arrows come here quite often, there's a great photo of them flying past the Burj al Arab somewhere around the innernet, always makes the chest puff up a bit to see them

St Landrew Posted 24 September, 2008 Author Share Posted 24 September, 2008 Sea Vixen. Based at Hurn As a kid I went to Summer School for a week, to do some extra work [what a swot I was back then] at Stubbington Study Centre. One day, a party of us were just coming out of the Study Centre approach road to walk to Titchfield to do some historical architectural learning, when one of those beauties came over the fence after its take-off. I shall always remember the green and white flash as it roared just overhead. As a design, the DH Sea Vixen wasn't exceptional; just good at what it was asked to do. But to this day, it remains one of my favoured 50-60's military aircraft, along with the Blackburn Buccaneer, the Gloster Javelin, and my out-n-out favourite the English Electric Lightning. Anybody noticed they're all British..?

We get the RAF into McCarren Int. airport here a few times a year (customs clearance before their wargames training in the desert) with the fantastic VC-10 tankers. They were here a while ago and the accompanying Eurofighters barrell rolled shortly after takeoff...when in Vegas! Hope they keep that one remaining Vulcan flying for many more years. Awesome plane. I thought it was gonna strafe me with machine gun fire - **** me was that loud! Back in the mid 80's was mowing the lawn when heard a noise over the whine of the hovermower, looked up and it was a Spitfire AND an ME 109 doing aerobatics right above the house. They spent about 15 minutes and then lined up for finals at Old Sarum. Suffice to say, grabbed the camera and hurtled up there and the guys were sitting chatting away at the small bar they had there, they were practicing for the summer display season. They then did a formation takeoff with an SE5 replica that was on the field and did a full throottle fly-by before heading off wherever home was. Have never forgotten that moment, priceless

Sheaf Saint Posted 15 July, 2009 Share Posted 15 July, 2009 I was out riding my bike the other weekend round Rother Valley Country park near where I live in Sheffield, and there was a hovercraft racing event going on at the lake. As I was riding I heard an engine noise that just didn't sound like any racing hovercraft I have ever seen so I stopped and looked around, only to see one of these beauties fly right over my head... Not sure if it was supposed to be overflying the hovercraft race on the way to an airshow (Waddington was the same weekend I think and is not far away) but he completely missed it, as the lake is the other end of the country park. Was a fantastic sight (and sound) anyway.
