St Landrew Posted 14 March, 2010 Share Posted 14 March, 2010 Yep, torn achilles tendon. Not only is he out of the World Cup, that could be the end of his career, at his age. Some people don't come back from that one. Feel sorry for the bloke, in a way.

skintsaint Posted 14 March, 2010 Share Posted 14 March, 2010 yep feel that will be game over for him, he has had a great career though. Shame for England but not a massive blow like the world cups before.

hamster Posted 14 March, 2010 Share Posted 14 March, 2010 Shame, I was only saying to my nipper earlier when watching Rooney's great performance that we (Engerland) always seem to lose a pivotal player in te run up to major tournaments. Then this! Maybe Fergie should start to rest Rooney or at least take him off when the game is in the bag, for Englands sake. I for one would be absolutely guttes if the worst should happen and arguably the best player in the World currently gets crocked too?
gaz Posted 14 March, 2010 Share Posted 14 March, 2010 I can't help thinking that its a Darren Anderton/Jamie Redknapp/Michael Owen injury, in that if he recovers from it, it'll be waiting to go on him again and again until he hangs up his boots. I'll always be convinced England would have won 1982 WC if Brooking and especially KK had been fit from the start. Some people don't come back from that one. Feel sorry for the bloke, in a way. I agree about feeling sorry for him but it makes Capello's job easier as Beckham's selection would have been more akin to a rabbits foot than a serious selection (a specialist free kick taker on the bench) and we are not exactly short of choices on the right. I like Beckham and hopefuly he can a get job in English football so he can start to challenge the baffoons who run European and World football. It will be waste of his celebrity / kudos in the game if we fon't use them but lets' not hodl our breath the forward thing FA will see things like that. Why does this sort of thing always happy to the guys and not the likes of John Terry? Anyway, in a way for Beckham it may turn out to be a blessing disguise to go out on a career injury than keep playing until you fade away or simply overlooked. saint_stevo Posted 15 March, 2010 Author Share Posted 15 March, 2010 obviously wouldnt have been a starter, but if we needed a goal always a threat from set plays and still provides the best delivery in the game imo. A good option lost. Milner at right mid for me

A good option lost. Milner at right mid for me Yes, we have very similar players in SWP, Walcott, Lennon and even Ashley Young to play on the right. Beckham offers something different which is why I'm sure Capello decided to recall him in the 1st place.
IamLeGod Posted 15 March, 2010 Share Posted 15 March, 2010 Absolutely gutted for him, always been a huge fan of Becks. He's a legend, deserved the ovation he got at Old Trafford the other night. In my opinion deserved a spot on the plane to South Africa.

Ferguson is a fully paid up Scotsman**, and it would delight him no more than to see England's chances impaired. **except for actually getting his hands dirty by managing the national team. sadoldgit Posted 15 March, 2010 Share Posted 15 March, 2010 At least it will end the arguement about whether he should be in the squad or not. It doesn't say much for the younger, quicker players that we have to have someone whose main job it is to take set pieces on the bench. Once upon a time a player who wasn't first choice for his club was not likely to be picked for the squad. Even without this injury Beckham was coming to the end of his career. We have taken too many fringe players in squads before. This time we need to take people who are fit, have pace and can play 90 mins. Beckham was a good player but never agreat player. Great players have all round ability. It might be a bit churlish to say that Beckham only made his name by taking free kicks - but when you look at players like Pele and Maradona Beckham doesn't come close. JustMike Posted 15 March, 2010 Share Posted 15 March, 2010 am gutted, wanted Becks at the WC. his delivery from the right is still better than most of we serve up and like has been said on here before is different to what the rest offer. Could well be the end for him and will be a shame seeing him on tv in the studio rather than on the pitch.

Wouldn't have been in the starting 11 but would of made (and did make) a big difference, when England lost their way, or became one dimensional. alpine_saint Posted 15 March, 2010 Share Posted 15 March, 2010 Hope this isnt career-ending, but glad he is out of the WC. The team can focus on their preparation and not on the f**k-off media circus surrounding them and the WAGs. Couldnt beleive this made the news on the radio here in Austria this morning... Usually I reckon Piers Morgan is a attention-seeking w**ker, but he was spot on in the Sundays about Beckham picking up the green-and-gold scarf at OT during last week. He turns everything into about HIM, not the team. I reckon England will be a better unit for his absence in SA (or would have been if Cole and Terry had kept their d*cks in their trousers)
INFLUENCED.COM Posted 15 March, 2010 Share Posted 15 March, 2010 Beckham is the best ambassador we have for the game, I agree he will be missed but it will not impact greatly on our chances of winning, I don't think Beckham makes it about himself more the media make it about him, he has always professed to being a fan of that club and I accept his explanation of the scarf incident. If only more loved to play for their country as much as he and I am sure Rooney does.

bpsaint Posted 15 March, 2010 Share Posted 15 March, 2010 Whilst i'm sure he wouldn't have had a place in the starting 11 i'd have still taken comfort from the fact that he was on the bench, knowing full when he could change the game with a few swings of the right foot. Totally gutted for the bloke, hope Capello takes him with the non playing staff just for a bit of moral in the dressing room. No-one else has displayed as much passion playing for England in the past 10 years IMO.
hamster Posted 15 March, 2010 Share Posted 15 March, 2010 Well he has apparently had the op already (this afternoon) so you never know, he might just come through in time. Even if he doesn't I would advocate him travelling with the team as a in a non playing talisman/ambassadorial role - much like young Theo did last time around ;-)
krissyboy31 Posted 15 March, 2010 Share Posted 15 March, 2010 The Finnish surgeon has stated that it was a completely torn achilles. The operation went as well as he could have hoped and Becks will be out for 6 months at the very least.
SNSUN Posted 16 March, 2010 Share Posted 16 March, 2010 Tis a shame, I would have taken him to the World Cup based purely on his experience and ability to play in many positions BUT England are lucky that they have many good right midfielders. If fit, Lennon, Wright-Phillips, Bentley, Walcott, Milner, Young and Puncheon will all contend that spot.

Whats worse than a Beckham at the WC playing and hogging the media ? A Beckham at the WC not playing and hogging the media. I think Capello should make him steer clear. sadoldgit Posted 16 March, 2010 Share Posted 16 March, 2010 I am in the same camp as Alpine (for a change). I won't miss all the hype surrounding a player who really isn't as great as the hype says he is. Just IMHO but I doubt if Beckham would ever have made it into a world's best starting X1 and I can think of at least 2 Saints players that I wuld have in my team ahead of him - MLT and David Armstrong. Because neither was as "pretty" neither got the same level of attention. But both could deliver as well as, if not better and more consistantly than Beckham. Fortunately we are yet to go down the road of American football where we wheel someone who is good at kicking of the bench to erm, kick a ball once or twice. Players earn an awful lot of money nowdays (even the not so pretty ones) and I don't think it is too much to expect a midfield player to have pace, passing ability, a good motor, heading ability and a decent scoring record. Of those Beckham only has the passing ability. Are you telling me that any player making the England squad will not be able to pass a ball or take a decent free kick? It removes the circus and will open the door for the younger players who we shall need to progress for the future. I won't miss the commentators creaming themslves over the odd Beckham pass that he hets right either. When Lampard or Gerrard deliver they don't say a word because as we all know, only Beckham can provide the killer ball. Its a bit like Heskey, we are told all about what he brings to the game...well what about what he doesn't bring i.e. goals? You have to weigh up what Beckhma brings to the table against what he doesn't bring. So we replace him with someone with a decent pass and all the other attributes that Beckham either doesn't have any more, or never had, and bingo! Thanks for all you have done David (and for taking Posh out of the marriage market) but it is time to look forward now and move on. All this for someone who was probably going to be a bench warmer in the summer.
