Dominican Republic

Make sure your life is insured before you arrive. OK in the hotel complex but outside is another story. Don't screw anyone as the locals are ridden. And never walk the streets after sunset. Everyting is served on a banana leaf and if you are white, take some lube as you will be the 1st prize in the raffle.

Have a good time and never look a Dominican in the eyes.

It used to have a reputation for food poisoning but I'm told that it's not so much of a problem these days. Airport transfers can be quite long and tedious but it does have some of the best beaches in the world. Like most of that part of the world, especaially Jamaica, be careful if you go out after dark. In the complex you should have no problems.

Next time try Antigua or Barbados, they're much friendlier.

Oh, and have a great time! :)

I'm not being pompous - I genuinely don't see the point in travelling all that way just to spend one or two weeks in one place that is divorced from the real life of the country you're visiting

For the weather and the relaxation. The same goes for the Maldives and countless other places.

Anyone been? I've somewhat been forced to go there for a week in April and I'm not really too sure what to expect.

I was a long haul airline pilot and spent many trips in Puerto Plata, and Santa Domingo admittedly staying at good hotels. Never had any problems with the food at decent restaurants, golf club, hotels, drink bottled water.

Take the same sort of care you would take in Southampton and check where you are going and use bona fide taxi companies.

If you want a nightmare try Lagos, now that is scary.

Now you're talking, Angola is pretty gruesome too.

i went to the Dominican Republic near-on 10 years ago and it was a fantastic holiday. Stayed at Jack Tar Village (no kids!) in Puerto Plata, which was superb. Food was amazing as was the hotel staff and entertainment. ...its a very poor country and quite unnerving when driving to/from the airport , but once in the hotel complexes it is wonderful. Do some of the touristy excursions to get a feel for the country and the locals lifestyle.

And ignore the poster who recommended Cancun....apart from the beach it's a commercialised dump .....would never set foot there again...

cancun's good if you like beaches, partying, beer and fanny (the missus will like the shopping)

otherwise u can go 20 mins down the coast to Playa del Carmen for more of a mexican setting and posh fanny

what else would you go on holiday for?

No, I'd still rather wait! But he said April. There'll be hot places in Southern Europe by then I'd imagine.

East and south I suppose. We went to Sorrento in early April and it was like spring here, 20 degrees daytime and very pleasant but not really sitting-out weather in the evenings. A month later and the temperature was up in the twenties.

Now I'm f*cked. I've booked a hotel over there about an hour and a half away from the airport. I intended to rent a car but have since found that you have to be 21 to do that. I'm 20. Does anyone know of a car rental company that don't have such age restrictions?

Get a Honda C90 and a pair of flip flops.
