Block 5 Posted 7 March, 2010 Share Posted 7 March, 2010 I have really enjoyed the diverse selections of tunes on offer so far in the Mixtape series. We are now starting to see some 'part 2' mixes but there are quite a few regular music posters who have not put their names forward to do a mix. I was chuffed to see Copey has finally put his name down and that is one I can't wait to hear. But there are some other posters that I'd like to hear mixes from, such as: The Stain. Deppo. Manji. Harvey. Redbul. St Landrew. Exile on Main Street. Saint Bletch. Dog (Can't wait to hear Red Octopus and Penis Extension). Who would you like to hear mixes from? Use this thread to put forward some suggestions and apply pressure to those posters who we would like to hear mixes from.
manji Posted 7 March, 2010 Share Posted 7 March, 2010 I am totally opposed to mixtapes. I despise the "culture" of Spotify and the Ipod shuffle. You notice when I put down what I listen to it is a whole album. Nothing annoys me more than when i ask someone what they listen to and they reel off a list of half-decent bands. When you pursue it you find out they have listened to only one or two tracks. I am happy to give you a list of Albums to be listened to in their entirety in succesion if you want.

I agree that most albums should ideally be listened to in their entirety; but certainly not all. I despise 'Best Of' albums and collections but a mixtape can be a useful introduction for people to new artists or even genres that they may not be familiar with. I'm sure you have some label samplers in your collection. As for a list of albums that you rate very highly........that would be lovely!

I agree - I can't stand it that people can listen to different tracks from different artists one after the other. It just goes beyond mental. A song is written by an artist specifically for it to be played within the context of the album. I imagine that when they are writing it, they are always thinking about the song that is going before it and after it. Don't even get me started on releasing singles! Why would anyone want to release a song on its own! With B-sides that are different to the songs that it will sit beside on the album? What kind of message are they sending out - that it is ok to listen to that song out of the context of the album? F*cking mental, no wonder the music industry is losing money! And what about when they licence their song for a film soundtrack? To be played next to a song from a different band? What the f*ck is going on with that? Do they not know that the song just simply doesn't work if listened to in that context? Jeepers. This country.
Deppo Posted 7 March, 2010 Share Posted 7 March, 2010 Copey has done a couple of mixtapes, Block 5. They should be on the list.

I have found one, it was the second ever SWF mixtape. I'm having a listen now. It's jolly good, especially the Blue Cheer tune. By the way Deppo........ when are you doing a mixtape? Come on mate, no excuses.

Julian H. Cope Posted 7 March, 2010 Share Posted 7 March, 2010 Deppo is an enigma, but he should definitely compile a mixtape. He could then hang it round Manji's neck.
Block 5 Posted 7 March, 2010 Author Share Posted 7 March, 2010 I fear Manji's disdain for my music taste. Have no fear young Jedi. Like you, I admire Manji's encyclopaedic knowledge of music but I fear he has an issue with elitism. I worry that this may manifest in a reluctance to appreciate the views of others. I suffered the same affliction in my youth; when DJing I would put masking tape on record labels so no one knew what that killer tune was. I even wrote misleading information on white labels and I would laugh inwardly when people told me they couldn't find them. I thought other people's opinions of music were irrelevant unless they had a copy of some obscure tune or other on vinyl, and it had to be on the original US label not the reissue. Fortunately I have now opened myself to extreme possibilities and I appreciate my daughter's opinion that Justin Bieber is a modern day Debussy. I want to see a Deppo playlist. Now get to work.
