GM, I would be interested to hear your take on categorising posters on this site who do go to games yet appear to know hardly anything about football or the games they have just seen.

IMO there are a lot of poor, misleading and curious posts on here regardless of their origin.

To Guided Missile (AKA J Misslebrook). I used to think that you had some interesting if not somewhat challenging points which were usually well made, however, I am now squarely of the opinion that you are just a wind-up merchant and a c u nt of one at that.

Welcome to my ignore list d!ck-Head.

This just for the record:

Every Derby fan I've had the displeasure of meeting has been an absolute *****..

I hate them almost as much as Bournemouth.

They all add to the entertainment that this site brings a large number of people from all over the world. It reminds me of that old Michael Jackson song...

We can't go on

Pretending day by day

That someone, somewhere will soon make a change

We are all a part of

God's great big family

And the truth, you know love is all we need

Good one; I find it hard to understand the diverse viewpoints expressed on here sometimes from people who all claimed to have been there. The only possibility I have ever been able to conclude is that some attendees know as much about football as I do about dress-making...

Most of the time I have no issue with the postings of the ex-pats and quite often they are a lot more lucid and erudite than those living within the myopia of the SO postcode. If the ball was on the other foot and I was required to move away from Hampshire then I too would find the forum invaluable to stay in touch with all things Saints. For avid Saints fans and regular match attendees it must be tough to be asked to move overseas and give up the one major hobby that can't be replicated elsewhere. Not sure I could do it but also if the offer was too good to refuse it would be equally ridiculous to turn it down for the sake of watching a game of football once a fortnight on average and equally ridiculous to be chastised for doing so.

All that said there are a small percentage of ex-pats who like to blow their own trumpet at every opportunity to talk about anything as long as it's not really Saints related. They rattle on about their ex-pat lifestyle either under some misguided apprehension we will be impressed or as some sort of cathartic exercise in lonely self-reasoning.

It is the small percentage of self obsessed ex pats who give the majority a bad name and as if to prove a point I didn't realise that we had that many. For the record I don't think I have ever noticed ex-pats in Canada or Austria use this forum as some form of 'look at me aren't I great blog' and only to discuss football and other related matters as those of us based here at home and anyway with the internet and technology in general aren't we living in a global village?

That cannot be said for some of the forum's resident and lonely self- absorbed bores in the Middle East and the West Coast of America who don't just confine their local activities to web forums but also like to hear the sound of their own voice on local radio. It takes all types but best not to let a justification seeking minority rule a relevant and entertaining majority that make this place a lot less insular and obsessively incestous as it is already.

+1.

We're all the same - boring, irrelevant, etc., etc. But I'm not going to let that damage your estimable credibility. You sure do know what you're talking about!

I apologise for the boring and irrelevant comment. On reflection, your last three threads make me look a bit of a chump for ever thinking that. For those that may have missed them, here are last three and I for one, can't wait for the next one.

I'm not sure if this has been highlighted elsewhere on this forum, but SaintsPlayer has the entire 90 minutes of the games versus Huddersfield and Millwall on their site. They say they plan to have the entire game on-line (not live, of course) for all home matches; they also hope to do the same for away matches.

This is fantastic - especially for those uf us who are unable to be at the games.

There was plenty of cheesy music as usual at the Winter Olympic figure skating events - not to mention lots of tacky costumes.

So I was pleasantly surprised to see Scott Moir and Tessav Virtue do their free-skate routine in the Ice Dancing event to the Adagietto movement from Mahler's Fifth Symphony. It's gorgeous music - used so effectively in Visconti's film Death In Venice.

Moir and Virtue's routine was beautiful - utterly captivating, in fact. So classy, compared to dreck like Phantom of the Opera. I've been listening to the Adagietto off and on now for the last few days.

Saturday's internet broadcast of the Walsall game was very poor. There were constant momentary losses of reception (lasting 2 or 3 seconds) throughout the game - very irritating, especially at moments of high drama.

This has been happening quite a lot this season. Where exactly should one direct complaints about this?

It's a pity your two compatriots have failed to ante up the fiver, to share their gems...

But Alps the differences in opinion are what makes footie great IMO. Be a bit boring if we all agreed on every attribute of every game/player/pitch/manager etc etc..

I think I'm pretty well versed in the ins and outs of footie but I'm no expert. I leave that to the likes of Wenger etc.

I liked the jibe against Wenger, but surely there must be limited opportunities for interpreting facts ? It really is bizarre when two different posters can have such diverse opinions of the performances ot Schneiderlin and Wotton, for example.

I dont think i have ever known a grown man to act so childish, especially on a web forum - why dont you grow up, stop baiting people.

I was under the impression you were a respectable businessman with valid views. You are in fact just a small minded man with big fish little pond syndrome.

As for pigeon holing people because of their nationality.... ****, what year are we in - i'm just glad people with bigoted views like yours are disappearing fast.

This is of course all in my opinion - shame really as i was very impressed with some of the info you have provided for us all.

that's pretty straightforward, it depends on how they see the game being played. Now I had a look at Wigan-Liverpool last evening and I'd say that Gerrard wouldn't even get into our side on his performance last night, others might consider that he was one of England's finest footballers and still is.

Morgan is a classy young footballer but being at Southampton isn't doing him any good at all because half the fans like gung ho kick and rush football. To me it looks more like rugby with up and unders and high balls pumped out of scrums.

This thread has descended from odd and worthy of a raised eyebrow, to being downright offensive.

Just skimming, I have been singled out even though I have not really criticised the thread the way others have, and I have seen comments such as Canadians being "genetically boring".

Is there ANY modding of this site going on anymore ? I would have expect this thread to be locked.

I was born in Canada, so in theory I can complain and get him infracted, I would assume.

Personally I find the assumption that all Canadians are boring as quite offensive. I am certainly not boring, I don't think anyone who knows me could describe me as that, yet it is your assumption that I am.

...seem to come in two flavours on this site.
  1. Last of the Summer Wine
Usually post in glowing terms about days gone by, trying hard to recapture the glory days, back in the mother country. About as entertaining to read as the TV show of the same name, and also about as relevant, to the fans streaming into St. Marys nowadays. Keep it up guys, I think you know who you are, but don't blame me if I think of Compo, when I read your posts. Let's face it, nostalgia is not what it used to be.
  2. Last of the Scummer Whine
Usually post in negative terms about anything related to the club, city or the country. In the early stages of going native, so not reached that grumpy charm that Compo has. More the expression that the club, city or country they left behind didn't quite fit their ideals, those that served them so badly when they lived here. Zero entertainment value in their posts at the moment and the only relevance to the fan of today is the possiblity that more impressionable section of our fanbase may detect a slight lowering of their moral, when reading them. I think of Lord Haw Haw when reading the uninformed dirge they post. He was hanged for treason, but I think the penalty for them, when Saints are back in the premiership will be the sight of their gradual decline into a sad exile, never quite belonging to their new country and unable to return to God's country to see their team play...

What a load of Bo--ox

I have found my blind prejudices against a number of groups have been reinforced by experience, apart from the odd refreshing exception. As far as you are concerned, I can't say your posts regarding Saints are the most exciting I've read. This could be because you were born in Canada, but then again, it may be because you have worked hard at it...

You make the assumption that boring is a bad thing, but I'd beg to differ. It is the national trait that led to the Canadian economy to avoid the worst of the banking meltdown, as this article demonstrated. I like my bank manager, accountant and lawyer to be boring. Conservative and boring. When it comes to literature, or even posting on a website, I prefer interesting.

Mind you, most Canadians do have a good sense of humour, as the large number of comedians from that country testify. I notice that not many of the Canadian posters on this thread seem to have one...

What do you want me to do, post about downhill mountain biking or snowboarding? I fail to see that any of the threads that I start, responses that I give are any more boring than the next one, or any more boring than yours, for instance.

Again, I don't think being boring is a bad thing, but it does not describe who I am, as a Canadian. It's like me describing the Brits as pikey halfwits, all 58 million of them.

Although that would be only fairly factual as the 2007 census numbers them at nearly 61 million.Which may of course include overseas residents.

Now I'm confused...

I'm offended that you judge me as boring, as that is certainly not my character. The same as if I judged you to be argumentative. Nothing wrong with that, but you could be offended at it.

The thing is the facts (the word is over used and generally used to back up a flawed arguement) are based on peoples perspectives. The differences are bizarre when you put your (not yours in particular) perspective on it. Also the medium of the written word is not great in the hands of most people - that doesn't help.

Emigrate, integrate and adopt the local customs, because banging on about how cr@ p/great everything is in your adopted country and how cr@ p/great everything was in your mother country just p1sses most people off.

Can the accountant be Green or UKIP? Please have a bash at the Aussie expats next. Garrisson Keillor is a famously funny Canadian (I think) - wasn't that smoker guy Canadian - Bill Hicks? I suspect Greg Proops is as well. I might be making this up. Have to confess that the Keillor stuff they play on the radio here in Oz is tedious, tho I liked his book.

I wish to humbly apologise for calling GM a racist. I have checked the UN definition believing that the title covered intolerance of Cultural Differences and I was out of order and wrong.

He is according to Google On line Dictionaries, a bigot. My bad and I apologise.

And to hold a grudge against ex pats because one tyre kicker who lived overseas and was NEVER a Saints fan had it in for another tyre kicker who tried to buy BOURNEMOUTH still beggars belief.

He is of course an Uberfan. He is from the supreme race and anyone else is non-Aryan.

What a shame that Mike Channon wasn't also a proper Saint coming as he did from Salisbury Plain, and obviously Terry Paine from Winchester and MLT cannot be Legends as they were not from Southampton either.

I also wonder if Mr. Cortese and Mr. Leibherr fit into GM's category of "ex-pat".....?

Pathetic. They call it clutching at straws.

You know what, I'm not interested in your games.

If it makes you feel better about yourself by putting me down, go for it. Bully for you (literally).

If you think that ridiculing posters because of the "undesirable" sub-group they belong to "bigs" you up in the eyes of fellow cyber-warriors on here, go for it.

I just can't compete with your scintillating wit, sharp repartee and incredible debating skills. [You could try getting your facts straight, though, and working on your logical thinking.]

Meanwhile, have a nice, un-boring, non-Canadian day.

I'd hardly thought that a very mild thread about ex-pats would be backed by the target of my thread, nor indeed cared. I am able to recognise them, because they wear their ex-pat status as some badge of honour, in the form of their internet handles. You know, alpine this, tijuana that, canada blah, dubai blah, internet poster of arabia...

...

I normally read the post, rather than the name of the poster

Should we all just call ourselves Eric, Tom, **** or Harry ... very imaginative. By showing where we are based I have met many Saints fans past and present living here and have had many an enjoyable (till the football starts :( ) nights out, which would not have happened otherwise. Also I've answered many PMs from other members asking for info about Dubai in regards to work and holidays, and have been more than happy to help out fellow Saints fans.

Tony Lynam lives in Southampton, so not a hard and fast rule, but in my book, never trust an ex-pat in regards to Saints. If they were true fans, they would live close enough for a season ticket, but they value other things in the life more than Southampton Football Club. Usually it's either the weather or the money...

PMSL .... shame you forgot the smiley to go with it.

Where were you when I needed that gem of career advice when I most needed it, and stupidly accepted an advancement in my career and ability to fend for my family and plan for the future and ended up overseas.

You can assume all you want sir - and you are obviously big on assumptions based on your op.

Its not baiting - it is a response - baiting is when you try and antagonize people into responding to a comment knowing full well that it will provoke an angry response based on you comments. I did not do this, i responded to your comment.

I did not call you that either, i said i agreed with the words of another poster who could obviously articulate his views much better than me - while i agree with him in his opinion, i did not specifically call you either of those terms - childish - yes, a c u nt - no, but that doesn't mean i dont agree with that posters view - Also, this type of language is about as adult as your original post. Sometimes you have to lower yourself to the same level in order to get a point across.

Semantics i know, but still valid points i think.
