GenevaSaint Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 (edited) Anyone out there have experience of the US education system? I've got a colleague who has just got a masters, is that the same as a UK masters degree? I ask as she's generally as thick as mince! Hatch Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 I started out in school in San Jose, CA. But I was only 4 and only stayed 6 months. The only thing I remember about it, is that I thought I had discovered burping . I thought I introduced it into the UK upon my return as no-one had ever done it before. Thats doesn't really answer your question does it.

Most US First degrees,IMO are just above A level standard. Ps Lived in US for 4 years and brought my kids back because of Educational System. My Daughter loved it at Secondary level and was with 16 year olds while 13 in Math. Mind you she did go on to Cambridge to Read Physics!
GenevaSaint Posted 5 March, 2010 Author Posted 5 March, 2010 Does she use multiple exclamation points? Absolutely, all of the time.

Colleague studied in evening classes, so I'm getting a good feeling for the level of the qualification.

Actually, the equivalence at first degree level is just about there - what our kids do in A2 can be taught from the same textbooks as first year US university courses. But their first degrees represent a better breadth of knowledge, as they will largely be on the credit system, so they have to take more subjects in the first couple of years. As far as I'm concerned, the master's year in the UK is the hardest any student will ever work, and the most stressful. If you get a masters from a UK university, you have every right to be extremely proud. And extremely tired.

Did an MA in Politics a few years ago, got my golf handicap down to 11, great year.
jjsaint Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 I have experience in both US and UK, and I'm pretty sure that a US Masters = UK Masters more or less. Also bear in mind that a US Masters is usually studied over two years, so not the same intensity. FWIW a US Bachelor degree is equal to a UK standard degree (but not honours).
bolo Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 what the hell is a standard degree? I thought every got honours....
bridge too far Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 what the hell is a standard degree? I thought every got honours.... It used to be the case that there were Honours degrees and Ordinary degrees. I don't know if that's still the case :smt102
Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 what the hell is a standard degree? I thought every got honours.... Nope, only if you do a dissertation do you get 'hons' - you can opt out in your final year, do somthing else and receive a simple "BSc" or "BA".
Hamilton Saint Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 what the hell is a standard degree? I thought every got honours.... A general degree here takes three years; an honours degree takes four. Generally, if you plan to continue your university education beyond the B.A. level, you would do a four-year degree.
mcjwills Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 what the hell is a standard degree? I thought every got honours.... If you get a Dicky Degree you dont get Hons attached (dicky = Richard = Richard the Third = Third)
