MbaleSaint Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 For the worst foreign dump XI: Stensgaard Nilsson - Jacobsson - Yahia - Chala Arias - Sarmiento - Safri - Bledelis - Dia - John oh dear! No way should Safri and John be in a worst foreign saints XI. Quality players.
The9 Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 No way should Safri and John be in a worst foreign saints XI. Quality players. Agreed. Get Mikael Nilsson in there, and you need Tejera and that Portuguese kid who Henry slaughtered on his debut as well. By the way, Kleber Chala won the South American version of the Champions League a few seasons ago.
Saint_clark Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 No way should Safri and John be in a worst foreign saints XI. Quality players. Nilsson, FWIW, is still playing RB for Sweden. He wasn't THAT bad.
Danish Saint Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 Agreed. Get Mikael Nilsson in there, and you need Tejera and that Portuguese kid who Henry slaughtered on his debut as well. By the way, Kleber Chala won the South American version of the Champions League a few seasons ago. Portugese kid with the poodle hair? Hugo Almeida?! Yeah, subsitute him for Chala then... And Tejera for Safri... For a gash striker, I would then have to go for Delgado instead of John, as he was injured all the time, while at Saints. Line up is then: Stensgaard Nilsson - Jacobsson - Yahia - Almeida Arias - Sarmiento - Tejera - Bleidelis Dia - Delgado Still pretty crap!
CylonKing Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 Alex Ostlund anyone? Still one of my fav players to ever wear the Saints shirt.
Give it to Ron Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 Leandre Griffet and Yoann Folly. Folly was great in the friendly v bayern but poor every game after. Griffet scored on his debut and was then dropped by Strachan. Came back under Sturrock and scored in the 3-3 against Newcastle but never had the ability to quite match his ego.
up and away Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 The day of the Ipswich game back in 2005/6 - we lost 2-0 and after the second goal went in the crowd turned on Rupert Lowe and that was, for me, the beginning of the end for him, until he came back again to "rescue" us from Dulieu/Hone etc. Anyway, that evening we went out on the town for a few drinks, and ended up at the casino at Town Quay. There we were with our £20 of chips on the roulette table, putting £1 or £2 at a time on black, or if feeling adventurous, maybe £5 at a time. On the same table were Kosowski and Hajto spunking our gate fees on the table, putting wads of £20s down at a time to buy more chips. I remember seeing the wads of notes and feeling angry that they got so much cash when they'd played sh1t that afternoon. Hajto was massive, as I recall, easily 6'4", and lots of muscle. Ipswich had just bought Alan Lee for a couple of packets of fags and we were only 3 months into Fullers 2 year recuperation period. What a great buy Lee was for that league. Hajto was massive, the whole team was massive. But the problem was only Dennis Wise seemed capable of winning a header. We had by far the tallest set of players in that league, but consistently let in headers whilst equally being unable to score from them. I don't think I have ever been so apprehensive when WE won a corner or free kick, as it nearly always ended up as a good attacking opportunity for the opposition, if not goals.
Thedelldays Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 cosimo sarli....best reserve striker who never got a chance in the team
Channon's Sideburns Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 Lucian Mettomo! I emailed Jim Hone once about us (well Burley) never addressing our CB issue. He replied that he was confident about 'Lucien Mottomo doing a job for us'. Little did Jim know that meant sweeping the changing rooms..
Channon's Sideburns Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 Who can forget "The Torpedo!".... What was that kids name? Arias?
Channon's Sideburns Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 Early 80's we had a prolific trialist...scored on an overseas trip then disappeared. La Ling? Trust me, he did exist.
benjii Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 colleter(sp) was a hard player I remember a disgusting tackle of his on Gus Poyet in front of the East Stand. It was a horrendous, straight-red, leg-breaker. He got booked and Poyet was out for 6 months! Good player though.
benjii Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 Early 80's we had a prolific trialist...scored on an overseas trip then disappeared. La Ling? Trust me, he did exist. Aren't you thinking of Jo King or Lie Ing?
Eastcowzer Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 Early 80's we had a prolific trialist...scored on an overseas trip then disappeared. La Ling? Trust me, he did exist. Tsu La Ling, on trial from a Dutch club, but Lawrie Mac' obviously did'nt rate him. Think he came from Macao originally.
Danish Saint Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 Imagine Van Gobbel and Colletter in the same side.... How many broken legs pr. game?
Victor Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 For the younger fans he will only be a name us older ones throw out now and again, but for anyone that saw him what a player!! him and Matty in midfield was pure heaven and anyone MLT rates so highly cant be that bad. Remember coventry away in the Grobelaar did he/didnt he match, he was pure class scored 2 Only scored one, actually. Everything about Ekelund seems to get exaggerated with the passing of time. And in answer to Arizona's question, I can forget - and have forgotten - Aledine Yahia. Who he?
Channon's Sideburns Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 Also in the 80's anyone remember Joe Blochell? Used to score tons for the reserves, but never really got to the 1st team..
St.Jeweller Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 Been racking my brains for a real old classic name..... Who remembers Claus Lundekvam???
oxfordshire_saint Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 Jay Lucas and Adrian Caceres didn't manage a first team game between them did they?
paulwantsapint Posted 4 March, 2010 Posted 4 March, 2010 Dont forget MLT he had to be an alien as he was out of this world
eesti matty Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 Peter Madsen? Thomas Stensgaard? I think it was Michael Stensgaard. I remember we lost 7-1 to Liverpool and people were chanting 'we want Stensgaard' after Paul Jones has a nightmare. There was then a two week gap until the next fixture and Jones kept his place and we beat Leeds 3-0. If Stensgaard couldn't get in after a 7-1 defeat (where Jones had a nightmare), then he was never going to get in.
lambertsrightleg Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 Eric Hassli!!!!! French striker signed in about 2001 i believe.
Foxstone Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 We have had our good'uns though.. Nobody has mentioned Egil Ostenstad yet - Brilliant for us!
scotty Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 Ronnie Ekelund... what a player he was true, until his back gave out. You know, the back we knew was wrecked before lawrie mac and ballie bought him...........
scotty Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 ...oh, and has Ivan Golac been mentioned already? him and the other guy we signed at the same time?
Channon's Sideburns Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 ...oh, and has Ivan Golac been mentioned already? him and the other guy we signed at the same time? Ivan Katalinic. He of bushy moustache and crap drop kicks that ALWAYS veered to the right.
Monkeyboy Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 Can't believe Ken Monkou hasn't been mentioned yet, what a player!
Channon's Sideburns Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 Oh, and Milos Drizic. We were going to sign him, in fact we agreed terms, but couldn't get a work permit. We then signed Ruddock as a replacement.... Turbo Booster Schuster......
thesaint sfc Posted 5 March, 2010 Author Posted 5 March, 2010 Seriously that was 2-3 years ago, and he played almost every game that year, and captained us sometimes in the Stern John/Pearson year...going to Wembley are you??:smt009 You know how sometimes you get the name of something on the tip of your tongue, but can't quite remember it? Well this was one of those. But wow, aren't you a super dooper fan. Well done.
Victor Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 true, until his back gave out. You know, the back we knew was wrecked before lawrie mac and ballie bought him........... More of the Ekelund myth - Saints did not buy him, he was on loan.
Chris Larkin Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 Tamas Vasko? Never signed for us, but he played in the Friendly at Eastleigh at the start of 07/08. Bristol City signed him on loan for the rest of the season, where he was grindingly mediocre. Apparently Leeds were nearly in for him this January. On a related note, does anyone remember some link being announced with a Hungarian Club a couple of years back? I don't think I'm imagining it. Also, I feel people are perhaps being harsh on Marcelo Sarmiento. He got good reports in the few games he played for us, and he's spent the last three seasons playing for fairly good clubs in the Greek Super League, qualifying for Europe last season. Nice one Burley.
Miffy Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 ...oh, and has Ivan Golac been mentioned already? him and the other guy we signed at the same time? I'm sure I remember Golac nutting someone once (on the pitch). Anyone else recall this?
magnet Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 don't mention that name again, please! only person i've ever seen bottle out of 80-20 challenges in his favour... Thats not true you've played with Minty :-)
Give it to Ron Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 Also in the 80's anyone remember Joe Blochell? Used to score tons for the reserves, but never really got to the 1st team.. I do...met him a couple of times as he was going out with the best friend of my then girlfriend. Decent bloke.
JackFrost Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 Eyal Berkovic had the game of his life in the 6-3 win against Man U
JackFrost Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 I don't think we ever saw Alaeddine Yahia play in the first team. If he couldn't displace Jakobsson or Davenport he must have been bad
JackFrost Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 Cedric Baseya, now playing for Le Havre in the French Second Division
Durleyfos Posted 5 March, 2010 Posted 5 March, 2010 What about Tahar El Khalej - remember that hack of a challenge on Dyer which put Dyer out for months, didn't he miss out on the Euros with England coz of it? For this reason, Tahar will always be one of my favourite Saints players.
