Saints 5-0 Huddersfield - Post Match Reaction

There's a point where opposition teams have to take responsibility for their own defeats, and there comes a point where they are simply blown away by a better team. I think this was the latter. Huddersfield Town are no mugs, and after this mauling they are still no mugs, as will probably be proved against Gillingham on Saturday. Where Saints go from here, in terms of standard of performance, is almost entirely upto them. With the current players, from this point on, I feel that it will be what particular mood they are in which will determine what result they achieve.

I knew it was going to be a good day earlier when I filled up with petrol and had the exact change to give to the cashier.

I wasn't wrong. Barnard was MOTM for me, he is so high on confidence right now. Our 3rd goal was bloody brilliant, Barnard played a big part in that.

I am so happy right now.

Fantastic game and fantastic entertainment, the evening had it all.

We looked a complete team against a very good side, and tonight everything clicked. Even early on when Huddersfield attemped to press us we notched it up another gear that they couldn't match. From tonights performance I couldn't pick a MOTM, but Puncheon certainly seems to have added an extra dimesion to our play and in a short space of time appears to link up very well with Otsemobor.

Scoring 5 goals with 5 different players is really beginning to show we have the players it takes to win games convincingly and we could have even scored a few more.

The crowd were great tonight too behind the team and was great to see the responses from Pardew acknowledging the fans whenever his name was sung from all stands of the ground.

Overall a great night, with an equally entertaining mild distraction of a Pompey fan removed from the Huddersfield following after a minor fracas with the stewards and local constabulary.

To cap off a great night upon getting home after a quick view on here I also took a look on Huddersfields DATM forum to see their view of the game. I have to say amongst all other forums I've seen in the past I have the utmost respect for Huddersfield fans, not one bitter comment from them on the main match thread or post match and plenty of compliments for Saints. For that alone I wish them the best for the rest of the season... except if it is at our expense of course. :D

How can you pick a MOTM after that performance. Absolutely superb. We had great balance to the side on both flanks. Puncheon/Semi & Harding/Lallana linked up well. Puncheon & Lallana also interchanged well. Deano & Morgan ran the game from the middle. Jaidi & Fonte rock solid. Rickie & Barnard never let the defense rest. Awesome team performance.

Big difference showed as well by having Puncheon who can actually cross a ball AND deliver a corner. Totally gobsmacked by the performance.

I have posted in the past that i was 'nervous' about AP as I didn't think he knew his best XI. I think he does now and he must relish the fact that he can pick them every week now with no distractions from various cup games until JPT final.

Very very happy tonight.

What a performance, what a result. Only 11 points off the play offs (if we win our game in hand on Millwall) with 14 games to play. It's certainly possible to get on a run off the back of a result like that. We have a few turnip fields to visit yet though so we just need to take each game as it comes. Can we do it? Big yes. Will we do it? We'll know 9 weeks on Saturday. COYR.

Does anyone else think that Lambert & Barnard remind them of Beattie and Ormerod in their heyday?

For me they are more like McDougall & Boywer.

Both fantastic goal scorers in their right and not what you would think would work as a partnership but it works because they are both so good, both in terms of quality and workrate.

Ormerod, for all of his effort, was never in the class of Barnard but I can see the connection between Beattie & Lambert or even Beattie and Barnard.

AP certainly knows how to assemble a team that is strong in all departments and is a great mixture of youth and experience.

I can't remember the last time I saw a Saints team without a single weaklink.

And they work so hard for each other which is the sign that the team spirit is what you would want.

I just can't wait for the next game!

I wonder does the team have enough pace? Puncheon/Semi apart, nobody is particularly quick, though the team has other qualities. For Derry and others, it was our lack of pace and width that was our Achilles Heel. Can we have width without pace, for instance?

i think many people including my self see reaching the play offs as getting automatic with out thinking we actually have to beat other teams.

I think that simply reaching the play offs give a certain mark of success to a season.

It's been the case for a while that for us to reach the play offs we'd have had to be in formidable form. Add in the fact that Pardew seems to do well in tournaments so I'd have fancied our chances.

I have been watching Saints since the early sixties and I would rate last night's performance as one of the most complete I have ever seen.It really was a magnificent team performance. By team, I mean both players on the pitch and the crowd who urged and cheered, that, if I was an away fan, would have found daunting.

We were class and oozed both skill, passion and determination. Leeds and Swindon will not relish playing us while we are in this form.

It was the sort of game you replay the moves a hundred times in your memory replay to be rolled out to bring a huge smile on your face. It was a night to be proud to be a Saints fan.

Well done EVERYONE

UGH we had Antonio and Waigo on the bench and Waigo came on and scored !! Did you not notice that we anhilated Huddersfield last night with our SPEED of thought and intelligence. Speed is only relevant if it gets you behind defences and Puncheon, Lambert, Barnard did that pretty frequently last night.!!!

Happy-Days, can't add anything different on this thread that's not already been said, apart from, who was the genius who spotted Puncheon's potential. What a difference he has made to this team.We are so dangerous now from wide positions and the changing of wings with Adam,is so unsettling for the opposition, brilliant. Our pace on the break was breathtaking at times.

Wonder what Neil Trotman made of it all.Well done AP, great result.

Sorry if already mentioned or i'm missing something, cant be bothered to search through all the posts... What was Lamberts goal celebration all about when he ran over to the away fans??

Presumably pay back for the abuse they gave him at their place at the start of the season.

He turned them down and joined us and was given a pretty hard time with Lambert what's the score songs etc.

How can anyone not want to sign Papa after he made an arse out of three of their players to get that goal ?

You notice the critics of Papa, like Nineteen C, have been quiet since he's done well with usual positive influence of goals & assists! He's got great awareness & ability to pick players out with passes straight to the feet.

have to say..I do expect us towin most weeks but this took the p1ssss..

utterly brilliant result..now, we HAVE to win at tranmere..simple as that

was there any pardew songs last night..?

As good as last night was ( i even enjoyed the walk over Itchen Bridge!!), we need to win almost every game from here on in!!! The team that played last night is capable of doing just that!!

Another great performance, thoroughly enjoyed that. If I'm being totally honest I think Saturday's performance just shaded it but that would be splitting hairs and clearly Huddersfield had a lot more about them than Walsall. Barnard and Lambert look really comfortable together and Lambert was just immense again. Difficult to single players out as yet again it was a fantastic team performance but.

I was away on business yesterday and was unable to go, but hearing and reading how we demolished a rival play-off team by what was seemingly a fantastic performance sent me to bed very very happy.

Brilliant stuff and all congratualtions are due to Pards and the team!

Another 5-0 against Tranny please ;)

I'm left wondering why there seems to be so little (relatively speaking) mention of Dan Harding? He was ****ing immense last night, best left back performance I've seen in years....

Not easy to single anyone out Daren, the whole team were superb, I like Harding although he does seem to lose his player a during the game on occasions - although not these last two!

He's playing with so much confidence at the moment, like the rest of the tram he was a joy to watch.

Oxlade -Chamberlain is the son of Mark Chamberlain.[A mate of mine knows MC].

Oxlade -Chamberlain .... sounds like an abandoned medieval village in Dorset.

He provides just what the side needs - a name you can barely squeeze onto the back of a shirt.

Come on Pards, sign some more memorable "English Village" names.

A Lytchett Matravers, or a Piddle-Hinton (son of Alan?) will do nicely.

Great night and what a side AP is building - plain to see last night that the additions of Puncheon (first time I've seen him live) and Barnard have taken us to another level. We look far better balanced last night with both Morgan and Hammond in good order in centre mid and an awesome front four, Lambert really looks to have upped his game and fitness levels since the Pompey game, he looks like he now believes he can play at a higher level - let's hope it's with Saints!

KD 7 - that's about the number of times he touched it.

JO 7 - limited defensively and might find both Leeds and Swindon looking to give him a bit of a torrid time.

RJ 8 - awesome, again.

Fonts 8 - quality player, looks like he's got another two gears from the level he is playing now.

DH 8.5 - we really missed him, it's no coincidence he was one of the players missing during our mini-slump. Fantastic show last night, if he could improve his final ball he would be even better!

JP 10! - first sight of him and v. impressed! He seems the 'complete player' as an attacking midfielder and is potentially the best in that position we have had for any number of seasons.

DH 8 - that's more like the DH I remember from his first 6 or 8 games, excellent tonight and a really good relationship with Fonte, seemed Fonte had licence to step out the back 4 when we had the ball and for Hammo to sit and hold. Worked really well, great defensive work and also found time to chip in with a goal.

MS 10 - different class last night, his best game in a Saints shirt?

AL 9 - another totally committed performance, can not believe how quickly he has matured physical-wise. if he keeps this up and he will end up as a genuine centre-mid, work on his goal scoring and he could become our very own Frank Lampard!

RL 9 - another top performance, he looked fresh and sharp and with a real appetite. Trade mark finish with a header big Ron would have been proud to put his name on.

LB 9 - a performance to put any doubters firmly in their place. Determined, strong, intelligent, aware, aggressive; he gave it the full monty tonight and looked the perfect foil for Ricky.

I posted after the Brentford game, 'something has got to happen to turn this side into a Leeds or a Norwich'; I think that something could just be Jason Puncheon.

No more hoofball in away games!

Keep Morgan, Lambert, Lallana and AP in the summer and we can start to think of being next year's Champs - no more AP out noises from NC - the fans gave their verdict last night and NC would be mad to change now.

AP has spent their money phenomenally well and we are building real momentum on and off the pitch - way to go AP!

Magnificent performace from the whole team last night. It seems unfair to single anyone out but I have to mention Fonte and Puncheon. Fonte is class and it's no coincedence that since he arrived we are beginning to keep clean sheets. Puncheon, also class, how refreshing to see a player so comfortable with both feet.

I feel like I've been to a gig, my ears are ringing, was the Northam really that loud tonight???

No it wasnt. The stewards got large parts of block 42 to sit down at points during the game

Braaaa-zil. It's just like watching Bra-zil!

Thought Walsall was the best performance I'd seen from a saints team for years, then last night topped it.

Huddersfield are no mugs as their brave attempt to get back into the game at the start of the second half showed, but we simply played them off the park.

If only there were about 10 more games in the season we'd be up for sure. As it is ....who knows? Bloody big points gap between 7th and 8th, but at least that mean there aren't lots of teams all competing with us. We only need about 3 others to have a bit of a bad run, not 8 or 9 others

Braaaa-zil. It's just like watching Bra-zil!

Amazing performance. Cracking atmosphere and was wonderful to watch. They weren't a bad side unlike Walsall but we were unplayable.

I agree completely. Huddersfield were much, much better than Walsall and didn't give us the freedom of St Mary's like they did. We were just awesome at times. The movement and passing was superb all over the park. Davis had to make one very good save in the first half but in truth, that was about all he had to do because the defence in front of him was absolutely rock solid (can't remember saying that since Killer and Claus were playing). Can't name a MoM because they were all at least a 9 out of 10.
