Saint_clark Posted 27 February, 2010 Share Posted 27 February, 2010 Earthquake must have been right out in the middle of no mans land (no mans sea?) then if it dissipated before hitting shore - especially when it was such a powerful one.

St Landrew Posted 27 February, 2010 Share Posted 27 February, 2010 Cancel that, Tsunami destroyed before hitting Chile. Can't see that happening MB. Any wave or swell, once started will only break if there is strong enough sea in contrary directions to disperse it. I can't see how a tsunami is going to be broken up, until it hits a land mass, as it almost certainly will be the biggest wave in the ocean. Then again, the Pacific is the biggest thing on Earth, and a lot can happen from one side to the other.

tony13579 Posted 27 February, 2010 Share Posted 27 February, 2010 Tsunamis are most devistaiting when they are funneled into a horse shoe shaped bay or an narrowing set of streights. If it is a small island the water will rise, swirl around the island rather than sweep through.

Saint in Paradise Posted 27 February, 2010 Share Posted 27 February, 2010 I have to go to work now but 2 websites here in NZ are:- http://nz.yahoo.com/ http://www.3news.co.nz/ Lucky for me where I live is approx 1000 feet above sea level and about 55 miles inland. Mind you it is in a very unstable part geologically speaking. .

Atticus Finch of Maycomb Posted 27 February, 2010 Share Posted 27 February, 2010 Keep us posted mate, if you can. I love the logic of this post. So if New Zealand gets destroyed by a tsunami, the only way you would hear about it is if someone from the area keeps you posted on this messageboard
Master Bates Posted 27 February, 2010 Author Share Posted 27 February, 2010 Keep us posted mate, if you can. A 4m [13ft] tsunami is not going to swamp any of inland NZ where S-i-P lives. Strange as it may seem, I happen to know where S-i-P lives. You know, sometimes it's best to keep your fingers off that keyboard. Edited 27 February, 2010 by St Landrew
