Just posted about this in the lounge. By all accounts, it seems they played an inelegible player against us, as all registrations are dealt with by the FA. Now even at grass roots level, if this happend, the team trangressing, would be booted out of the cup, and the win given to the team they played against.

Mail article now updated:-

There was even some concern that his inclusion as a substitute in Portsmouth’s FA Cup squad tie against Southampton would threaten their status in the cup as a consequence - but the FA confirmed yesterday that the club was safe as different regulations apply to their competition.

'different regulations' !! selective regulation more like, as this thread title suggests it is becoming more and more embarassing for football as a whole when every day a new 'irregularity' is published, if PFC were a horse they would have been shot by now.

But he didn't play as far as I recall.Had he set foot on the pitch then - presumably - it would be a different outcome.

Do unused subs get medals, win bonuses etc, or are they just there to keep the bench warm? They are an equal part of a matchday squad and could come on at any time during the match. If Grant had seen fit, he would have sent the player on. The fact that he didn`t is irrelevant IMHO.

Even though they beat us 4-1 on our own patch their plight and the sad man that is Storrie make it not so hard to take!

I am really loving their downfall, oh to be in P*mpey today hearing all those MOCKNEY Skates moaning!

I have to go east today to visit customers and yes I have a club tie on.

I think it was somebody like stockport or bury that got kicked straight out no replay when they did the same against Chester city a few years ago so there is precedent on this

Feel free to link, I'm pretty sure that most cases where a player is on the squad but doesn't get on the pitch result in warnings or minor fines, it's only regarded as affecting the integrity of the result if they actually play.

I seem to recall a recent case where a team was loads of goals ahead and brought on an ineligible sub and they were either chucked out or forced to replay, but that's useless and anecdotal without a link too.

Can I just confirm I've got the correct jist of this thread. The FA are saying its ok to have ineligible players on the bench in cup games?

Yep!!!!!...just a few responses on the takeover thread.

Rules for fa cup; rule15(h) and (i) ALL players must be registered

They kicked AFC Wombledon out of I think the Trophy (might be the Cup proper) two seasons ago for fielding an ineligible player.

The lower down you go in the leagues, the worse the penalties gets. I remember a conference team getting kick out of a cup for fielding an non-registered player and also a few teams have had points deduction for the same issue but for league matches.

When I said I don't think it matters, I was referring to the FA rule book. I remember WHU getting into trouble in one of the Cups a few years ago for fielding an ineligible player - he came on with a couple of minutes to go. I'm pretty certain they wouldn't have been in trouble had he not come on.

As long as he actually played no part in the match it's just a name on a piece of paper.Anyway we need to get over all this, we could have WON that match but we couldn't convert any one of 5 or 6 clear cut chances and we lost.

- 15. PROVISIONS CONCERNING PLAYERS

a.Each team participating in a match shall represent the full available strength of each competing Club.

b.

i.Each Club must provide a list of names of players taking part in the game (including the names of the substitutes) to the Referee and a representative of their opponents in the presence of the Referee at least 60 minutes, in the Competition Proper or any match in the Qualifying Competition that is being televised live, and 45 minutes in all other matches before the time of kick-off (the "Official Team Sheet"). Any Club failing to do so will be liable to be fined by the Council a sum not exceeding £100.

ii.Should any nominated player or substitute sustain an injury after the submission of the Official Team Sheet to the Referee and before the kick-off, he may be replaced, provided the Referee and opponents are informed before the commencement of the match.

c.A maximum of seven substitutes may be nominated. A Club may at its discretion use three of those seven substitute players at any time in a match. Substitution can only be made when play is stopped for any reason and the Referee has given permission. Prior to the substitution being made the Club must identify to the Match Officials the number of the player out and the player in, in accordance with the Official Team Sheet.

d.All players shall be qualified as players according to the Rules of The Association.

e.A player shall not play for more than one Club in the Competition in the same season.

f.All players must have been eligible to play in the original tie in order to play in a replayed or postponed match; however a player who has been suspended according to the disciplinary procedures under the Rules of The Association may play in a postponed or replayed match after the term of his suspension has expired.

g.A substitute who does not play in a match is entitled to play for another Club in the Competition in the same season.

h.In all Rounds of the Competition a player shall be a "registered player" of his Club under the Rules of the Competition.

i.

i.A "registered player" is one who is either, in the case of a player under written contract, registered with The Association or, in the case of a player without a written contract, registered with a League in which his Club competes in the current season. Any such registration must have been received and accepted by The Association or League by 12 noon on the Friday previous to the date fixed for playing the Round, and the registration must be continuous through to the date of the match. .

ii.In order to be eligible to play in the Final, the players must have been correctly registered and eligible for the Semi Final Round of the Competition.

iii.An International Transfer Certificate for Players coming from overseas associations (including Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland) takes precedence over a Player's registration. Therefore, this is also required by 12 noon on the Friday previous to the date fixed for playing the Round for the Player's registration to be valid.

j.Temporary (loan) Transfers

i.A player on a temporary (loan) transfer is ineligible to compete in the Challenge Cup Competition unless permission to do so is given by the lending Club in writing and a copy is received by The Association by 12 noon on the Friday prior to the date fixed for playing the Round. Any permissions must clearly state that the player has approval to play in The FA Challenge Cup Competition. A registered Trainee or a player who is registered on a Scholarship for work experience may play for another Club, subject to written permission being given by the Club that he is registered to and provided that such permission is received by The Association by 12 noon on the Friday prior to the date fixed for playing the Round. The Association will not give permission for players on loan or work experience to play against the lending Club.

ii.A player recalled, at any time prior to the date of the Round, to his original Club from temporary (loan) transfer, in accordance with the terms of the loan agreement, may represent his original Club. Such player may only play in postponed and replayed matches if he had been recalled in time for the first match in accordance with sub-paragraph (i) above and (iii) below as applicable.

iii.A player on temporary (loan) transfer is eligible to compete if transferred by the lending Club to the loaning Club after the date and time for player qualification for a round but must have been eligible to play in the original tie.

iv.In the Competition Proper, players on "long term loan agreements", are not considered "loan" players for the purposes of the Rule, and are therefore eligible to play in the Competition.

Well I can see that it could be argued that he didnt come on, but also a decision could be made knowing that for example, they could take off a defender and pt on an attacker. If they scored the defender was able then to come on to shore up the defence ,when that advantage was made. It is all part of tactics and assessment at that given time. The whole squad are part of the game. When there used to be only 1 sub managers had to be very careful how and when they made their substitutuions. Now they can balance it by having a group to choose from.

If NC felt like it , I would be amused he made an objection and asked for a replay. At least it would highlight yet again how they have been bending the rules.

We already have enough injuries as it is, we need to let it go.

As a L1 do we really even want to think about re-instatement?? We were never going to win the fecking thing and lost 4-1 at home to a very poor Prem team. No reason at all to think we would do any better if he had to play them again or indeed if we were to play any other team left in the Cup. FFS, I think one FA Cup beating a year is enough for any side, do we really want to try for two?

We lost, they were/are better than us. Get over it. Would be an embarrasment if we went through on default now anyway.

I am not particularly bothered about having a replay or being re-instated. It is just the fact that once again, rules seem to have been bent or ignored when it comes to the Blue Phew.

I agree but if it means the defeat against Pompey could be officially erased from the records all the better. They fielded players on the day who should not have played. " of them scored and changed the outcome, add to that an illegal player.

What iff it was the Cup semi final or the world cup final would you be happy if the winning side won in the same terms.

The FA cup was always about even chance, and fair play IMO

A reply would be fine, although I would be just happy for them to be penalised severely and Brum given a bye.

Are you a masochist! Losing once to them is quite enough for me without having to go back for seconds! Let's just move on. Next time we play them we may well be in a higher league than them.

Remoove the players like Ohara and the other loan palyers and signings they shouldnt have had and we would beat them next time. The players would believe they could roll them over and make sure the hurt they felt on the day would be avenged.

But I know what you mean

Manny Omoyinmi was the West Ham played for the record.

There was also a Welsh side who won the League and then had all their points deducted for fielding an ineligible player all season, think it was Welshpool but can't be sure.

Stuff all to do with the original point but amusing.

AFC Wimbledon played a player who had been retired and hadn't played for two seasons but was with Cardiff previously so needed international clearance and they didn't get it.

I think its more of a sore point that Quincy Owusu-Abeyie played in the cup. He was signed after they finally got their transfer embargo lifted when they clearly still had no money. It should not have been lifted and he should not have been signed. Many have said he was the player he changed the game with the first goal and his all round performance.
