“10 Saints go Marching In…”

“If Saints ever get to Wembley, I’ll walk there......” – Graham Harris - 2009

This evening I was contacted by a Saints Fan called Glynn, to ask if I would make people aware of an event on and just before Saints trip to Wembley. The event is for 10 Saints fans to walk to Wembley in time for the game on 28th March raising money and awareness for EVERYMAN.

Everyman is a campaign that was launched by The Institute of Cancer Research in 1997 to

create awareness and research into prostate and testicular Cancer.

It is a great idea and great charity and I wish all the guys all the best and would urge on the users on here to at least chuck a few quid at them.

SAINTS FANS IN 80 MILE MARATHON TO WEMBLEY

Their boots were made for walking, and that’s just what 10 Southampton fans will do before the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final in an 80 mile charity trek to see their team at Wembley.

To celebrate their club’s appearance in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final on March 28, a group of fans will take to the road in a football-crazy idea which could raise £5,000.

Lifelong Saints fan Graham Harris came up with the energy sapping suggestion 12

months ago during a particularly barren run for his side.

After witnessing a miserable home defeat, Graham vowed to walk to Wembley Stadium to

see Southampton play, not thinking they would ever get there again.

But being the funny old game that football is, his team enjoyed a renaissance this season and powered their way to the final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, meaning he had to be true to his word.

Graham and his nine friends will set-off from St Mary’s Stadium on Friday March 26 to

Basingstoke, then from Basingstoke to Runnymede on Saturday, and a final push to

Wembley on the morning of the big game.

They are expected to arrive with 30 minutes to spare.

He hopes to raise £5,000 for the Everyman charity and will walk up to 30 miles per day with

his friends.

Graham said: “I said I’d do this in 2009 when we were broke and were really struggling. It was a beer induced threat, but my son was with me and he was quick to remind me when we beat MK Dons to get to the final! A number of my friends have pledged to walk the route with me, and we are hoping to raise £5,000 for Everyman – a charity close to our hearts.

“Preparation has gone really well from a fundraising perspective. It is just the physical side of things I need to start working on now!”

Graham thanked the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy for its generosity in supplying tickets for the

final, along with a match ball to keep as a souvenir.

He said arch rivals Portsmouth had done something similar when they got to the FA Cup final

in 2008. “Some Portsmouth fans did a similar trek and raised £4,000, so naturally, our target is £5,000 as we want to beat them!

“We have already got £300 in the bank and hope that all Saints fans will get behind us. It

should be fun, if not a bit tiring.”

Best of luck to them, I've done the Oxfam Trailwalker which is 100km non-stop, so I know they've got a tough trek ahead of them.

From experience of long walks though, anticipating doing it with only 30 mins to spare before kickoff is gonna be a big gamble!!!!!

I don't envy them doing this - they must be mad!!!! :)

I did a sponsored walk last summer, for the charity for which I work. We were walking the length of Hadrian's Wall (84 miles), although some of us (myself included) were only doing half of it. The aim was to complete the walk in 4 days (2 days for those of us doing only half of it). Usually the walk is done in at least 6 days!

We did a punishing 26 miles on the first day, after which I was suffering with severe blistering on both feet. On the second day, we were scheduled to complete a further 16 miles an a particularly hilly part of the route, but unfortunately the pain from the blisters became too much and I was only able to complete 8 more miles.

Even though the route from Southampton to Wembley is much less hilly, it sounds to me that what these guys are opting to do could be equally punishing if not worse! I would advise them to get in lots of training. My training was insufficient. I did a lot of running, in order to build up fitness and stack up the miles, but not enough walking. They need to try to walk at least one day in training where they cover the same distance as their longest day's walking. By the sounds of things that could be as much as 30 miles.

I hope that they will achieve everything they are setting out to do and that they can raise lots of dosh for this worthwhile cause. :)

I was thinking the same. Google Maps shows Runnymede to Wembley as being a 6 hour walk so I hope they set off early on the Sunday morning.

Best of luck to them.

I was a member of SISA when Branfoot was in Charge and at lease 15 of us vowed we would walk to West Ham for last game of the season if he departed which fortunatley he did.

We managed to raise about £2500 for Steve Mills Charity on that occassion and we able to celebrate after our 3 - 3 draw at Upton Park with all the team at a London Saints do near Waterloo.

I do wonder however if you are being a little ambitious with your plans.

I know its not quite so far to Wembley as West Ham, but when we did the walk it took us 4 days to complete approx 22 miles a day and that was hard work.

Good luck with your plans and I hope you raise plenty for Charity

They've just gone past my house outside Winchester. They look pretty cheerful so far but I hope the forecast torrential rain doesn't dampen their enthusiasm too much.
