Southgate, this season at Middlesbrough

W7

D3

L5

24 points from 15 games, sacked when 4th, 2 points from automatic promotion

Strachan since has had

W5

D5

L8

20 points from 18 games, dropping them to 9th, 4 points from play offs

Got to feel for Southgate.

Frankly, it was a miracle for Southgate that he retained his job for as long as he did.

Nonetheless, what a shocking lack of conviction by the Boro' board, he should have had at least a season to turn it around, although the fans had well and truly turned against him.

Steve Gibson showed a great deal of loyalty to Southgate for several seasons. The timing may have been odd, but Middlesbrough were never actually going to go anywhere under Southgate. I doubt they be any better under WGS, until he gets everything sorted for the long term. There is also the thought that Middlesbrough are actually at the level which befits them.

This would be the same Gareth Southgate who had three complete seasons (yes, the "give them time give them time Lawrie Mac etc etc" longevity never fails theory) with Boro where they got worse and worse and worse and then were relegated. Despite what the "give them time" brigade like to think Southgate didn't look like turning into Alex Ferguson any time soon.

Middlesboro will never go anywhere with anyone. They have a small fan base and are geographically disadvantaged (to put it politely).

Their correct level is in the Championship.

Luckily for them, they have a very good senior management who will ensure they don't overstretch themselves and get ruined.

They will probably get promoted again at some point and then relegated after a year or two. It'll be a laugh.

your arguments are so pathetic they are self defeating, think about it

it is true...how come we cant expect much after no pre season but you look into WGS results after he has been in less time than pardew

WGS has alot of (and has done a lot of) wheeling and dealing to do

there will be players at boro who dont want to be there...remember what it was like when we went down..even our star keeper leg it over money for a few days.

how you can post such things about results then on the other board champion poor results....when BOTH managers have had NO pre season

Delldays, think about it mate.

Bit different taking over relegated side who had just lost player etc etc

to taking over a team which has just managed 24 points from 15 and was 2 off automatic promotion.

No changing mentality etc needed just find a couple of extra points.

In fairness, he had to deplete his squad year after year and bring through the younger players and not spending a great deal on players.

Or did he sign Alves??

Alfonso 'couldn't score in a brothel' Alves was one of Southgate's signings. M'boro are a small club, they just got lucky with Steve McLaren (who I think is a v.good manager, just not cut out for international management) and I think they may have found their level now tbh. The Prem is full of clubs like Boro though. Take the bottom half of the table for instance:

Birmingham

Stoke

Blackburn

West Ham

Sunderland

Wigan

Wolves

Hull

Bolton

Burnley

Portsmouth

How many of those teams could you say actually deserve their Premiership status? Certainly not any of the bottom 6 imo, and then Stoke and Blackburn have been pushing their luck in the past few seasons and Brum would be included in the list if they weren't having a good season like they are at the moment. Then you've got teams like Newcastle, West Brom, Norwich, Saints, Leeds, Luton and Nottingham Forest who have got long histories in the top flight but are languishing in the lower divisions. Football is a funny game...

Well I guess they deserve their Premiership status because they got promoted...usually how a league system works anyway. Would be slightly boring if top-flight status was based on size of ground and what you had done in the past...

West Brom haven't been regulars in the top flight for years, nor have Norwich and I'm pretty sure Luton's spell in the 80s was the only time they'd been up there.
