hypochondriac Posted 20 February, 2010 Share Posted 20 February, 2010 I have been fullsome in my praise of todays match. But because there is such a performance disparagy to our last few league outings, I think it is an extremely valid question to ask. Odd that you would think this considering how well we played against pompey.
CB Saint Posted 20 February, 2010 Share Posted 20 February, 2010 Alps, seeing as we have a mathmatical chance of getting to the play off and considering your comments re keeping players fresh by going out of the cups., do you think we should send a weakened team to Wembly to make sure that the first team are fresh for the league? dubai_phil Posted 20 February, 2010 Share Posted 20 February, 2010 Yawn. Sorry it's late here not re the same old argument... A different perspective. NC & ML have said that the club must be run as a BUSINESS. Because we are now a Private Company we will not be privy to financial data. If we take them at their word it means that our Income is important amd the more income we earn the more we can invest in the team and facilities. What we do not and in all likelihood will NEVER know is exactly how much CASH ML is investing versus the club making it's own money. People can ASSUME all you like but we all know that simply makes an ass out of U and Me The argument on the footballing side is still open - Lambert is still playing well even having played 40 games, MODERN football teams chop and change every week, so where are our qualifications and experience to be able to justly criticise? Have we drawn too many games this year - yes. What is the reason for that Poor Squad Poor tactics Poor Refs Lack of focus Poor Team Selection Players unable to take the number of games No one person will have the right answer. We need to do better. Today is a start. If that tempo can be kept going then these threads (not just yours Alps) will become irrelevant. If we don't keep going, we'll have a thousand more and no one will be right

red&white56 Posted 20 February, 2010 Share Posted 20 February, 2010 ..once-and-for-all, that AP had his eye on the wrong goals (the cups) up until now ?? No - AP said that he had to build a "winning" mentality, so progress in the FA Cup and getting to the paintpot final has (IMO) helped him to change the mentality within the club. There are 2 ways to answer that : 1. Its only one more game now. In for a penny, in for a pound. And if they win, everyone will feel fresh as a daisy. or 2. Its going to preoccupy the teams thoughts for a couple of weeks before and could distract them from league games, and if they lose they will be sulking for weeks afterwards, also affecting league results. I really dont know. AP should play his strongest team in every game from now on, and sod the rotation cr*p.

up and away Posted 20 February, 2010 Share Posted 20 February, 2010 No - AP said that he had to build a "winning" mentality, so progress in the FA Cup and getting to the paintpot final has (IMO) helped him to change the mentality within the club. Just after our worst hammering of the season? yeah that follows. It does not surprise me that we won today, something I could easily see happening. But sadly the only clubs dropping points are the top 2, really not much help to ourselves. We have now got two games a week for virtually the rest of the season, everyone a cup final if we want to get to the play off's. That is a mountain to climb and I can easily see some lame performance to one of the lower clubs putting a big dent in our ambitions. I expect us to get close to the play off's but could easily be 3 points off and you have to ask if the JPT is worth those points, because we clearly sacrificed league form for cup. Why the fook you cannot generate that winning mentality against the likes of Exeter, instead of the MK Dons in the cup is beyond me.

St Landrew Posted 20 February, 2010 Share Posted 20 February, 2010 (edited) Not at all, Alpine. What it might prove is that, with the January window transfers in, Saints now have a league squad that is probably the equal, possibly the best, of any in League One. It is entirely possible to play in the Cups and play in the League. Although I have ever been entirely convinced by the argument, it seems all professional footballers will tell you that doing well in the Cups will ultimately benefit a team in the League, simply because it can get the team into a winning momentum. It also raises squad morale in the process. AP is no different in that mentality, and has said so. The fact that Saints are now out of the FA Cup, but can still look back to a largely excellent performance, as they put Portsmouth on the rack, at times, must be seen as a positive, a week after that result. I have a feeling, Norwich City didn't quite know what hit them. Saints totally dominated today's match, just like they did the first 60 minutes, a week ago. Whether I'm convinced of the professional argument or not, only the Cups will allow a lower league side to test their mettle against higher quality. And a worthwhile test it proved too.
