Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 20 February, 2010 Share Posted 20 February, 2010 Good result today - 1 down 17 to go. Lots of fans have said it was (very) unrealistic to expect the playoffs this season - hopefully this result has proved to them that we are a better side than they have given us credit for? Hopefully AP will stick with a winning side too? Lots of positives from today. Off day from Norwich, but sounded like we were red hot anyway. Nice one! I've just had to pick myself up off the floor! It wasn't a Norwich off day, we simply made them look extremely average. We ran the show today from start to finish.

Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 20 February, 2010 Share Posted 20 February, 2010 Fantastic result. In his after match comments, Pardew says he had his best team out, which makes such a difference. With just 1 cup game to go now, hopefully we'll be able to get some consistency to our team selections, which will lead to an even greater fluency in our play. Golac's Cunning Stunts Posted 20 February, 2010 Share Posted 20 February, 2010 This made me laugh from Norwich forum: for me today the defense, especially Pele and Nelson, got found out for what they really are, league one defenders. We came up against IMO the best strike force in the league and it showed. Barnard, Lambert, Lallana and whoever that tricky little black guy on the wing are championship players. Pele and Nelson play well against the likes of Hartlepool and Brentford with League One strikers.
NI76 Posted 20 February, 2010 Share Posted 20 February, 2010 Weird comment from Pardew on Solent after the game. He said that with the transfers dealings in January the dressing room is "a little bit quieter than it used to be but there's more quality". I agree about the quality, but why is it quieter? It's in his interview on the BBC Sport website, just over 2 mins in. Not slagging him off, I think he's the best manager in this league by a mile but I just wondered what he meant. VectisSaint Posted 20 February, 2010 Share Posted 20 February, 2010 Probably because the players haven't got to know each other yet, 5 new players can make a big difference, especially to those who were on the fringe before and now realise they aren't or to those in the team before and now aren't. Could also be because Pulis is back and everyone is trying to work out why. Or maybe Patto was a loud mouth

saintjay77 Posted 20 February, 2010 Share Posted 20 February, 2010 Not a good day for Maths to day is it. 37+6=43. 54-43=11  However the good news is that if we beat Huddersfield we could be 8 points from the play-offs. That said, the play-offs went out of the window when we failed to beat Exeter. haha fair point. at a glance it looked like 9 to me. Think your right though, we have dropped a few to many points against teams that make the difference at the end of the season. Still think we are close enough to chase the play-offs and with a bit of luck one or 2 above will slip up and give us a chance. I wont be overly disapointed if we dont make it this year but will be next year if we are not challenging at the top. Todays win shows that we are moving in the right direction though and without the cup distractions we might be in for a decent run in.

Really, there is no difference to the abuse and snideyness on here whether we win or lose.. FFS, you're always negative & seem to relish moaning about Saints. Some take umbridge with that. Accept it. We had a great result. Be happy & side step those having a dig. Don't take the bait. Surely we've one common goal - our love of our club. For once, ignore the petty **** & enjoy our win & let us hope we continue winning from this platform. Take our games in hand. Regain our winning ways in the league after the cup distractions. Onwards & upwards! (predictive wrote "beards" and upwards then, how random that would have sounded Lol) Bickering gets tiresome!

It's in his interview on the BBC Sport website, just over 2 mins in. Not slagging him off, I think he's the best manager in this league by a mile but I just wondered what he meant. Arizona Posted 20 February, 2010 Share Posted 20 February, 2010 Finally made it out of the carp arc. Wasn't in the multistory, whoever asked, was at Norfolk County Hall. Bit more about the players: Davis - 7 Made one excellent save second half when at shot deflected upwards off a defender and looped horribly under the bar. Couple of "it's behind you" pantomime games got him booked for time wasting. Quite funny. Semi - 7 Has great pace, got forward and supported Puncheon well. Might have hit the post first half too. Can't remember exactly who that was though. Norwich never really gave him much to think about. Jaidi - 6 A bit shaky first half, with some hoof and 50p heading. Looked better second half though. Fonte - 8 Excellent. The more I think about it, Norwich really got very little past him. Harding - 8 Reliable as ever. Excellent distribution, cutting inside and finding Hammond or down the line to Lallana. Little hoofing, great outlet when Norwich put pressure on. Puncheon - 8 MOTM. Bag of tricks with some excellent deliveries. Mr Antonio has strong competition. What a choice to have! Hammond - 8 A good strong captains performance, some great vision and passing. Schneiderlin - 6 Felt he was a bit weak at times and went missing. Average. Lallana - 7 Pretty quiet first half, but improved second. Very unluck hitting the post twice. Lambert - 7 Good build up play. Skied a great chance first half. Good free kick in the build up to the first goal. An inch lower and it would have come down behind the line. Norwich seemed to make a point of marking him tighter than Barny, which ultimately played into our hands. Barnard - 8 Two very well taken goals, with another disallowed inbetween. Can only assume the (very dodgy) ref gave a foul for the tussle in the build up. Missed a good chance at the back post first half, but otherwise excellent. Subs: Antonio came on in the 5th minute of injury time. 2-0 away to the league leaders and it's 6 f**king minutes. Same as the Ipswich cup match. shurlock Posted 20 February, 2010 Share Posted 20 February, 2010 Back from the game. Puncheon my MOTM. Glad Hammond is back in the middle - steadied things when Schneiderlin was losing his head. Jaidi and Fonte are definitely the first choice CB partnership. And fair play to Semi who endured alot of stick and went a few marauding runs (Lallana really should have done better with one run) My only question mark over what was a great performance is what happens when Lambert isn't so dominant in the air? Norwich's CBs were absolutely shocking today - I can't stress this enough- Lambert had both of them in his pocket. We've struggled for ideas when we have come up against tighter defenses that can cut out the long ball and our ability to play off Lambert. rocknrollman no2 Posted 20 February, 2010 Share Posted 20 February, 2010 Before the game i would have settled for a draw. saintwarwick Posted 20 February, 2010 Share Posted 20 February, 2010 A good all round performance by the sounds of it - now can I get to Wycombe? One game at a time please lads - Wycombe next - and hopefully another 3-points although they managed a 1-0 win over Millwall today! All we can do is qwin our games - Leeds are in free fall, and what betting we end up with them at Wembley in May IF we make the playoffs? Much happier than this time last week - the "A" team has obvious bite and composure! For me Huddersfield at SMS is a real 6-pointer in a couple of weeks - if we can win all our games up to then they will be dead worried about coming to SMS. With some sensible ticket pricing the crowds could be close to sell outs for the home games - just what the doctor ordered. If the club want the big time invest in the crowds for the rest of the season. They did that at the start of the season with decent ticketing pricing for season ticket holders. To answer your second point, get it on the deck and play it. Saints can play it and we're easily as good as Leeds or Norwich on the ball. Don't hoof it at Lambert would be my opinion. I think dodgy pitches must have something to do with that. I would have thought they are all told to get the ball down and play it but when they go out there and run around in a soggy patch they automatically get the ball in the air. On the ground we must be one of the stongest teams in the league and we tend to have more trouble when playing away on pitches that are or lower league standard. Andy_Porter Posted 20 February, 2010 Share Posted 20 February, 2010 Just got back home from Norwich, fantastic result obviously but the most pleasing thing today was the performance it's the best we've played in a long time probably since the Oldham/Southend 3-1 period we went through. The wide men and two full backs really ripped Norwich to pieces, I thought at first having Lallana left and Puncheon right was a mistake and all a bit George Burley but it worked out well with the two of them cutting inside and either taking a player on or slipping it outside to the over lapping fullbacks who where left with loads of space. We defended well from the front, looked solid throughout, retained possesion well and used the ball well in all the right places. There wasn't any hoofing, no long throws etc just a solid footballing performance, we made Norwich look very average. Davis - Didn't have much to do. Was silly of him to get booked we never looked like conceeding so there wasn't any need to time waste. 6/10 Ostemebor - Getting better with every game although I'm still not convinced he's a better option than James. He just seems a bit pedestrian at times and scared to throw himself into tackles. Linked up well with Puncheon at times. 6/10 Jaidi - Just the usual performance we've come to expect from Jaidi no nonsense defending put himself about well, Norwich front men didn't get near us all game. 7/10 Fonte - Didn't have much to do as Norwich really didn't create but as usual his distribution was spot on, really works well with Jaidi. 7.5/10 Harding - Solid in defence and put himself about well. Also Contributed a lot going forward, never looked troubled in defence. 7/10 Puncheon - MOTM, just ahead of Lallana for me. He looked dangerous all game, the Norwich midfield and defence just couldn't cope with him, like Lallana he just popped up all over the place whilst still managing to track his man down the right hand side. Looks like the perfect signing for us. Only downside was missing his chance when he was through on goal just after half time. 9/10 Schneiderlin - Didn't have his best game today, done all the dirty work but his passing game just didn't get going. He ran himself into the ground against Portsmouth so I assume he's still suffering from last weekend, might have been an idea to bring on James towards the end and give him a rest. 5/10 Hammond - Superb performance, back to his best if he can keep up the level of performance from today all season we will be in with a shout of the play offs in May. 8/10 Lallana - One of the best players in the league he showed again today he's class above, could have quite easily come away with a brace, I've no idea how the second one didn't go in very unlucky. We will have a struggle to keep him next season if we're still League one. 9/10 Lambert - Bullied the Norwich back four all game and kept popping up all over the place trying to bring everyone into the game. Fabulous strike for the first goal really thought it was going in, their keeper was no where near it. 7/10 Barnard - Best performance for us by a long way today, I thought he was a bit of a poor signing after the first few games but we all saw he could play today. Well taken brace, could and probably should have been three. 8/

Bit hard to play football on that pitch at Exeter but you have a point, if we just go over the top to Lambert and miss out the midfield we're neglecting the strongest area of our team. Nice to see us back to our best on the ball today, moving it around well and taking the **** out of a very good side at times, just need to keep up the same level of performance on Tuesday or the result will be meaningless. Spoke to the norwich man of the match and he was pretty shocked at how much we spent on players and that we are one of the big teams.found it hilarious when he was asked if their manager specifically talks about keeping lambert quiet and he said they are top and don't have to worry about indiviudals and just play there own game but admitted lambertd a class act also he asked how semi is doing who he thought was on loan at saints I said imo he's been solid and he said he thinks he's a good palyer along with puncheon and that the red card never was.
