revolution saint Posted 19 February, 2010 Share Posted 19 February, 2010 I've just seen a bit on the news about Tiger Woods apology and thought about whether it was necessary. I'm sure he should be apologising to his wife and kid(s) but to the world over a private matter....I'm not sure he needs to do that. The same for John Terry (I'm not sure if he has apologised though). It's a bit like when Dianna died and Mrs Windsor was harangued to show some emotion, maybe a tear? It seemed hysterical and over the top to me then and was probably the only time in my life I found myself defending her over what should have been a more private affair. I thought the same when Bill Clinton was nearly impeached over his affair. There are some things I feel should deserve an apology - Blair comes to mind for the war in Iraq. I don't think an apology for an affair or a private matter is needed though and in any case does anyone believe they are doing anything other than pandering to the court of populist opinion because a PR person told them? Thoughts?
tombletomble Posted 19 February, 2010 Share Posted 19 February, 2010 I do kind of agree with you but can understand why Tiger felt that he needed to do this. He isn't just another sportsman but one of the most recognisible men in the whole of sport. Parents would have told their kids to look up to him as a role model, of what can be achieved and he kind of blew that. Also, the more cynical side of me expects that it was as much about protecting his 'brand' and future sponsership deals
CB Saint Posted 19 February, 2010 Share Posted 19 February, 2010 Tiger humiliated his wife publicly, I think it is right that he apologised publicly. It is just one step he needs to take. Fair play to him though, he was unreserved in blaming himself and didn't look for any excuses.

Also, the more cynical side of me expects that it was as much about protecting his 'brand' and future sponsership deals But that's the thing - he is just another sportsman. Just happens to be very good at it but ultimately his only worth to us is when he's playing golf. I can see how he can be a role model for his own kids but not to others - surely that should be their own parents, family, teachers etc? The only way any sportsman or celebrity should be used as a role model is in relation to what they are successful at - in Tiger's case it would probably be dedication and practise. You're probably right though about him wanting to protect his "brand" - which really devalues the useless gesture anyway.

CB Saint Posted 19 February, 2010 Share Posted 19 February, 2010 No he didn't. That was a combination of the press and his missus trying to wrap a golf club round his head. Of course he did, by virtue of his mega high proflie. If your life is under that level of scrutiny then you really should think twice before playing around as it always gets out. If tiger was a nobody then it would not have been reported and his wife could have kept her humiliation relatively private. As it is, the world knows she was cheated on. He also said that there was absolutely no truth in the golf club beating thing

dubai_phil Posted 19 February, 2010 Share Posted 19 February, 2010 FWIW having been lucky enough to have spent time close to and spoken with the man himself when he played regularly down here. Tiger is no longer just a man, he is a corporation, he has become the first "sporting" billionaire not only through ability but by what he and his team have managed to make his brand. The human in him showed itself with his "weaknesses" - to be honest IMHO I view him in a better light as a result, he IS human after all, not a machine. Would the human HAVE to make that speech? No of course not Was the speech about his home life? No of course not Was it about Tiger the Corporation? - well yes obviously AT FIRST SIGHT, it is clearly about laying the ground work for the Tiger Brand to come back into play and make a lot of money for a lot of people, and also about keeping drunk numpties mouths shut on golf courses in future tournaments. But the interesting comment in this was actually from the PGA themselves when they explained it was a part of his therapy. Now we all know the Yanks are crazy for their therapists.... The Telegraph Earlier a leaked letter from PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem explained why Woods chose today to make his first public comments. "As we understand it, Tiger Woods's therapy called for a week's break at this time during which he has spent a few days with his children and then will make his statement before returning http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/golf/tigerwoods/7271840/Tiger-Woods-deeply-sorry-for-irresponsible-and-selfish-behaviour.html So does it make a difference to us mere humans that Tiger apologised? Nope. It's all about the sponsors which means Marketing Executives, which means MBA's which means he had to do it because they teach it to people at College that you shouldn't be human.. St Landrew Posted 19 February, 2010 Share Posted 19 February, 2010 In all honesty, I don't know why he came on like a President to do his apologising. A simple statement to the press, that he was sorry, would have been enough. This is another example of celebrities taking themselves far too seriously. They are not role moels, and nor should they ever set themselves up to be. Part of the problem, is that, as sportspersons, they are paid far too much money. Perhaps 10 times, 100 times, as much as they deserve. Admittedly, Tiger Woods does good work outside of being a sportsman. But he do that wihout all the huge millions, just for swinging a metal stick accurately against some plastic. Some people work 70 hour shifts, save people's lives, and if, or when, they make a mistake, often due to overtiredness, which ends in someone dying, or being mamed for life, they are struck off the register. Being a doctor/surgeon should be one of the most valued jobs a person can do, and the entertainer/sportsman should, at the most, be paid as much as the doctor/surgeon. Can't see it happening in this topsy-turvy world. As for the professional footballer..?

saintkiptanui Posted 20 February, 2010 Share Posted 20 February, 2010 Tiger Woods is the dullest man on earth, he's always crying and having tantrums on the golf course and has a sulky childs face but TBH all golfers are knobs except Nick Faldo, he's handsome. Ian Poulter is one of the biggest knobbers, he looks like Paula radcliffe.

Atticus Finch of Maycomb Posted 22 February, 2010 Share Posted 22 February, 2010 Apologies are a waste of time. Certain apologies, like Mel Gibson for his anti-Jew tirade, or when Boris Johnson apologised to Liverpool, were so so stupid because they were apologising for things you know they did on purpose and would do again. You cant apologise for something you did on purpose. Simple as that.
