Why are we 15th and Norwich top?

Avenue Saint

Recommended Posts

I know and they practically started on minus 8 points (according to a couple of people on here) and they are top of the league. We still battered them on their own patch. For some reason we have a good run, followed by a bad run. Well bad I mean we draw a few!! We are looking very good and the team are there, just need to click like we did today.

I think we will have a fair crack of it this season but feel in my heart of hearts we will just fall short. Next season though lads and lasses we will be top of the tree, I have no doubt!! COYR!!

We'll do well to get a draw today, just to dampen expectation :) Wes Hoolihann on the left, is the best player in this league and will make a monkey out of whoever we put up at right back. IE We don't have a proper one. Otsemobor will play no doubt.
Seems that my prediction was more accurate than yours.;)

Did Hoolihan play today? I don't recall hearing that he made a monkey of anybody. Otsemobor seems to have had a decent game. Two goals from Barnard, but Lallana ought to have had two and Puncheon should have scored too. Apart from Colchester, it seems that we have shown Norwich to be not as invincible as their home form and league position suggest. We didn't just win; we won convincingly.

Phil - Nicks arguement doesnt work though. He claims that a 2 point per game average is good enough (id almost be inclined to agree)

BUT we havent won 2 points per game on average!! The fact is we have played 28 our points total is 34 (44 without the minus 10) & thats closer to 1.5 points per game.

1.5 x 46 = 69 points meaning we would most like finish 9th or 10th (based on 2008/09 league)

Nicks 2 points per game only comes close we you exclude games that apparently 'dont count'

Sadly for Nick - EVERY GAME COUNTS!

Every game counts

Our first game Millwall the side was

Davis, Murty, Thomas, Perry, Harding, James, Wotton, Schneiderlin, Lallana, Patterson, Saga

3 weeks later Trottman had replaced Thomas & Mellis had replaced Wotton it was our 5th game Morgan was on the bench

Our 10th game

Davis, James, Jaidi, Trottman, Harding, Mellis, Hammond, Schneiderlin, Papa, Lambert & Lallana

The changes in the team in that period reflect in the results, as the team gelled the performances improved. We played damned good football against Rovers and naively lost a great game.

Results in a season are all that anyone is interested in and our start was slow.

The fundamental importance however is that at each window, considering where we started from in the Close Season are we seeing improvement?

The answer has to be yes. Is it fast enough for us - for me yes, for others - no.

Do new signings take time to settle into a team? Yes which is why few clubs buy many players in the January window.

So in answer - GS & Nickg are both right

I am one of those that has critisized AP as and when I felt it necessary. Usually I have argued that his selections are too negative or that his substitutions don't work.

I have agreed with GS and TDD to a point on some things but for the life of me can't understand why GS can't understand where NickG is coming from.

We nearly died and started with a **** poor team. It took us ten games to kick start our season. I agree with NickG that if we could continue winning at the mentioned required rate we would possibly have enough points for the play offs. Nothing is guarenteed.

I agree that we have improved a great deal. I would need to be blind not to have seen that.

Title winning form has always been said to be win at home and draw away. With 3 points per win that may have changed slightly but yes 2pts per game would be promotion winning form.

Todays game I am hoping, signals AP's intent to be more attack minded. Just maybe in a few weeks I might raise my hand and admit that I was wrong about our manager. God how I would love him prove that to me.

yeah, true but what about now? They are consistent and we aint. Pardew is the man, anyone doubting this, needs to be shot but we need to go for it a bit more is what im thinking.

Rest of season crucial for risk of stating obvious.

We're not consistent??????????????? Is our record no something like 4 defeats in 26? Have we only lost 1 in the last 8 at home, with the 1 defeat coming against a premiership side? I'm sure we've only lost 2 away games out of the last 15??

Maybe its just me, maybe I'm stupid but that all seems pretty consistent!!!!!!!!!!

PS.............. Norwich 0 Southampton 2

it's slightly better than that... 4 defeats in the last 30 games (all competitions)

what a record...

Oh for a bit of consistency!!!!!!!!!!!!

Four defeats in thirty is fantastic, but I can't help thinking what might have been if we had managed to hold on in our last three away games before today. Six points dropped, even if we had only managed to hang on in one of those games it could well make the difference at the end of the season.

Was so releaved when we got our second today.

We've lost eight all season (all competitions) two of those againts EPL teams not bad really. We are not an easy team to beat this season (unlike last season), just need to convert a few more draws into wins a we will be the real deal. Still a fantastic result today COYR.

Agree 100% with you mate, sure it'd been great to reach the play offs this year but that was always a long shot. In my mind this season was always about building something for next year, if AP had offered me 5th round of the FA cup, Wembley in the JPT, Safety by December, and still an outside chance of sneaking the play off's I'd of ripped his hand off. Yes some games AP has been a bit negative, yes I've questioned his sub's and or tactics and yes I've been gutted seeing wins turn to draws BUT, I can see AP's vision, I can see where he's taking us and I like it, 0-2 today could of been 0-5, Portsmuff could of been 3-0. AP is building a good team, if it doesn't quite click this year I'm sure it will next, enjoy the ride lads.

i was comparing our record to norwich, their straight wins and our draws but hey today is a very happy day, Im hopeful we can go on a run. When I started this thread, didnt intend it to go the way it has lol but suppose everyone's gotta get their 2 bob's worth in!

Also the way u throwing statements or questions at me with 60 thousand question marks on the end seems like a bit of an interogation! dont take too kindly to that chap.

I am really grateful the club was saved and that we have bought in some good players.

AP is a good manager and hopefully knows what he is doing but despite all of that I would really like us to be pushing for the playoffs.

Draws against average teams in this league are not really good enough.

Man Utd got beat by Everton today .....

It's been said before, but I'll repeat for Glasgows sake...

a. -10pts is a big ask to overcome.

b. Poor start to season caused by almost non-existant pre-season and some poor players left over from last seasons shambles.

c. It takes time to get a squad performing consistently well, especially when you're adding new players in to try to improve the team.

In actual fact, AP has managed to get the team playing really well. The morale in the camp is excellent. The fans are returning. Those that attend the matches are happy because they see this. Those that don't are less happy because they don't see or feel the atmosphere at SMS now. Don't get me wrong, this is not to say you're a worse fan for not going to matches (before Alpine shouts at me), but fact is I don't think you can get a sense of how much happier the whole club is now if you don't go regularly to SMS.

For me, frankly I would rather we were plying our trade with this team in L1 than the team we had last year with Lowe and the Dutch twerps in the CCC. As such, promotion is less critical to me as a fan....I really like AP, his attitude and all he brings to the club. I am prepared to be patient and wait for even better times.

Excellent Post! COYR!!

Of course you have! LOL

perhaps, but was giving him the benefit of the doubt that maybe he does genuinely feel he has a point rather than trolling - but think yesterday may have proved otherwise.

Nick, summarise the question again now and I will hapilly answer.

DONT however try and bait forum users with accusations of being a 'troll' very childish.

1) Is it still relevant to moan and criticise the return from the first 10 games as there has been a clear improvement since then?

2) Do you think 2 points per game is a decent return?

1) I dont like to prejudice against any period of the season and most of my posts refer to the whole season not the 1st 10 games.

The 1st ten games count so yes its fair to include them in a 'season so far summary'

Are you obsessed with the first ten games?

2) Yes 2 points per game is decent enough. We DONT have an average of 2 points per game though we have an average of closer to 1.5 so your question is better asked on the Leeds or Norwich board?

HTH

If you need any more :smt100 please just ask (politely)

In defense of Pardew he inherited a squad of players who were not good enough and with their confidence broken late in the pre-season. Only four of our first game starting eleven still get a regular starting berth. There hadn't been a winning attitude for several years, etc. etc. etc. And then it was, of course, the -10points we started with.

Pardew has made a quite remarkable job with all of the shortcomings he had to deal with and so little time to change it all. I am critical in one area only, which is his tactical pragmatism and the belief that application and hard work is more important than tactics. He sets one thing against the other, when history tells us that both are just as important: No team anywhere in the world has had success without the right mental attitude and good conditioning. But no team has had much long term success doing what everbody else are doing, without having considerably deeper pockets than the opposition. We might have here in L1, but not the further up we're travelling.

However, when it comes to what AP was up against when he arrived here, he is worthy of praise for what he has done. Norwich started out with a poor manager who got rapidly replaced with a good one. Who do I think had the worst job? Ahhh, let me think......

We won.

Why are some people (or one) moaning?

Because some people (and we all know who they are) love to find a cloud for every silver lining.

Huge result yesterday and good to see the new players slotting in so well. I stil think we are unlikely to make the play offs this season but, with a couple of decent additions in the summer, we look set for a decent crack at the lague next season.

We were a bunch of strangers and it took us 10 games to gel and start picking up results.

that is simply not true

It's not true no. But we were pretty terrible at the start of the season though.

Could you ever see this being good enough to gain promotion?

Davis, Murty, Thomas, Perry, Harding, James, Wotton, Schneiderlin, Lallana, Paterson, Saganowski. Subs: Bialkowski, Gillett, Holmes, Lancashire, Pulis, Thomson, Gobern.

Because i certainly couldn't.

Ok, I'm delighted to be wrong. Best result of the season tbh. And Hoolihan is rated as the best player in this league by certain pundits on Sky. Hence my comment. I'm a pessimist by nature, being a Saints fan. It's all a bit good now.

Because Norwich score a lot of goals and we don't get anywhere near as many. It's football, the reason one side is a lot "better" than another is all about the ability to put the ball into the back of the net at virtually every chance you get. We saw that last week, if we could do what is primordial in football, stick the ball in the onion net, we would have won about 4-1, we didn't and we lost 4-1

A player can be absolutely f**k awful for 88 minutes out of 90, if he does what he's paid to do for the other 2 minutes you win 2-0.We have far too many players who miss easy chances, it cost us in 2005, last year and will probably cost us our play-off place this year.We have missed a hatful of sitters of late, goals that would have gained us 6 to 8 points. It's something we don't do well and I presume it's because we don't have a coach talented enough to

work on the finishing of our "strikers".

This is why Simeon Jackson should have been brought in. Still not too late thoguh imho. Jackson scored another yesterday to get Gills first win in 11 games. He'd been left on the bench for 60 minutes, along with Dennis Oli - they ahve been getting 'restless' I hear. They completely changed the game when they cam on as a double substitution. New boy Dickson had a better game than Jackson though, very good workrate apparently. Maybe seen as a good workhorse replacement for Jackson when he surely leaves this summer. Get in NOW Alan.
