Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 18 February, 2010 Share Posted 18 February, 2010 Depends on what the infection is caused by. Food poisoning after eating shellfish is especially common, as all four culprits - viruses, bacteria, toxins or chemicals - can be involved. Symptoms of food poisoning include stomach pains, vomiting and diarrhoea. In severe cases the victim may develop a fever or even go into shock and collapse. Symptoms usually come on within: 30 minutes, in the case of chemical poisoning One and 12 hours, if the illness is due to bacterial toxins, for example botulinum toxin 12 and 48 hours, if it results from a bacterial or viral infection, for example salmonella, rotavirus

saintkiptanui Posted 18 February, 2010 Author Share Posted 18 February, 2010 Me and the missus had oysters to start at the Olive tree on Saturday, by 3am monday morning I was being sick and by 3pm the missus was being sick. I don't think I'll ask for restaraunt advice on here again. Only lasted about 12 hours max.

An ex bought some at Borough Market, was feeling ill within 3 hours, called NHS direct within 4 hours and was admitted to hospital within 5 hours for the night. It's the chemical one Dog mentioned that is really bad. And the good news is - it can cause a total shellfish intolerance in your system. A mate has that, even a shrimp paste used in Tom Yan Goong (Spicy Thai soup) can have him in hospital inside 2 hours Have some shrimps somewhere safe before your next holiday just in case

So from what you say we got away lightly and it shouldn't ruin all shell fish?

You should check it out in the safety of home first and see how you get on with a Prawn ****tail (rather than in a box at Wembley) This part of the world FP is almost an occupational hazard, strangely the worst I've had was from Salami that had gone off, but hey ho we learn Oh and time to write a letter to the place you ate them, be polite, point out that you enjoyed the evening but that they should check their processes and suppliers just to be sure that the same problem doesn't affect future clients. (I use the same trick with airlines - always gets an upgrade on your next flight in your case should get you a voucher from the restaurant - polite, supportive but pointing out they should check their kitchen or their suppliers in case others aren't as lucky)

hamster Posted 18 February, 2010 Share Posted 18 February, 2010 Oysters are best fresh froma genuine seafood place tbh. In America I undestand that Maine is THE place to go for seafood, apcording to my nephew's gf (from Maine) no-one ever gets poisoning there. As for the Olive Tree, well I won;t be taking a risk there now and was planning a b/day meal with about 10-12 mates in a couple of weeks. Now glad of your feedback, sorry that you were our Guinea Pig though kip.

swannymere Posted 18 February, 2010 Share Posted 18 February, 2010 It doesn't seem very likely to me that it would take from Saturday night until monday morning before you were ill if the oysters were to blame, any reaction to food poisoning is usually within 6 hours not nearer 30! Dog Posted 18 February, 2010 Share Posted 18 February, 2010 I just passed a little puke just reading this thread, that is what life is like after oyster poisoning. I must add that I still do have the occasional oyster when they are fresh, it's like playing russian roulette, sometimes I don't puke, but I always end up with cronic stomach pains and the runs.... I never ever had this before I ate a bad one, and I used to eat oysters monthly for years as you do. Over!
