Window Cleaner Posted 17 February, 2010 Posted 17 February, 2010 Surely the fringe players on the first team rota could do with a run out from time to time. Does it cost us more to play Gillett and Gobern in the reserves?
SFC Forever Posted 17 February, 2010 Posted 17 February, 2010 Finally someone else brings up our worst problem at the moment. How do we keep the players who spend weeks on the fringe matchfit? Is there a way to play 4 teams in a week, because that is basically what we seem to need.
Saint_clark Posted 17 February, 2010 Posted 17 February, 2010 I assumed Gillett and Gobern, and others like them, WERE playing in the reserves.
Matthew Le God Posted 17 February, 2010 Posted 17 February, 2010 Players like Pulis, Gillet, Forecast, Molyneux etc are unlikely to be here beyond the summer so pointless giving them reserve time when it would hold back the youngsters.
Andy_Porter Posted 17 February, 2010 Posted 17 February, 2010 I get the feeling Pardew wants rid of a lot of our fringe players and thinks by not playing them in reserve games he might convince them to leave sooner.
70's Mike Posted 17 February, 2010 Posted 17 February, 2010 I get the feeling Pardew wants rid of a lot of our fringe players and thinks by not playing them in reserve games he might convince them to leave sooner. Problem is not that they need convincing, but that no one appears to want them
boxosponge Posted 17 February, 2010 Posted 17 February, 2010 Saints Res: Pernecky, Argent, Reeves, A. Martin, Saville, McNish, Oxlade-Chamberlain (Preen 70), Dunford, Holmes, Doble, White. Subs (not used): Dovey, Racine, Robinson, McLean.
Saint_clark Posted 17 February, 2010 Posted 17 February, 2010 Pardew obviously likes Garyn Preen as he put him on the bench a while ago. Argent, McNish, White, Racine and McLean are meant to be good as well.
gonzo Posted 17 February, 2010 Posted 17 February, 2010 I'm sure McNish was on the bench for a game I attended last season. Can't remember if he came on or not, but the bloke I was sitting next to said that he looked promising.

I have to question whether playing Pulis. Molyneux and Forecast would strengthen the reserves, seems to me it would make it even weaker. Why are these players still around? If they are surplus to requirements and no-one else wants them why don't we pay up their contracts, at least they could go look for a club that way, or find a job.
SFC Forever Posted 17 February, 2010 Posted 17 February, 2010 I wonder how often we have a team of fringe players playing another team of our fringe players.

From what I've seen of him which is probably about 10 games he looks decent enough, nothing special though.
david in sweden Posted 17 February, 2010 Posted 17 February, 2010 Surely the fringe players on the first team rota could do with a run out from time to time. Does it cost us more to play Gillett and Gobern in the reserves? It's clearly difficult to keep fringe players match fit and yet still look to bring on younger talent. We see the big "drop-out " every year when the Academy lads either graduate to full pro contracts, OR get the boot and end up playing local league. The list is endless. Those who shine like diamonds in the U16 / U18 sides fail to make the transition to the "adult" sides. Look at the rave reviews players like;Ollie Lancashire and Simon Gillett got during their Academy days, but now..they aren't even worth a place on the bench and unlikely to have any future at SMS. We have to bring on the best youngsters we have. Players like Walcott and Bale, Lallana and James made it as teenagers and we must get more like them. If it occasionally means that our Reserve side gets thumped 0-7, then so be it, that's how they learn.

shurlock Posted 17 February, 2010 Posted 17 February, 2010 Who was not named on the bench but travelled up to Exeter a few weeks ago and was involved the various pre-match routine? Looked like Mcnish - can anybody else confirm?

Picking the youth team for a reserve fixture only shows them they've got a way to go without giving them a clue as to what's required.

Exactly, should be an experienced spine with youngsters out wide alongside the pros with more academy players on the bench. Something like... Bart Argent - Perry © - Martin - Reeves Preen - Gobern - Gillett - White Barnard - Doble Would learn far more playing a team like that and the first teamers would get a decent bit of match practice.

The9 Posted 18 February, 2010 Posted 18 February, 2010 Who, who, who, who, who, who, who, etc. Well I've seen 11 of them play, and I haven't been to a reserve game since September and never watched the youth side, maybe you should go to more reserve games if you want to know rather than just showing your ignorance ?
Liquidshokk Posted 18 February, 2010 Posted 18 February, 2010 Was more a dig at myself as I should know who they are. Pipe down
The9 Posted 18 February, 2010 Posted 18 February, 2010 Was more a dig at myself as I should know who they are. Pipe down You should know who Holmes is, the rest are "an acquired taste". Nice to see Poolis can't even get a game for the ressies now though, or is he injured again?

Whilst on the subject though, how do you go about getting tickets to see reserves side (if you need em) Bit of a noob (ignoramus if you'd prefer) when it comes to anything outside the first team im ashamed to say.

saintsforlife7 Posted 18 February, 2010 Posted 18 February, 2010 Who was not named on the bench but travelled up to Exeter a few weeks ago and was involved the various pre-match routine? Looked like Mcnish - can anybody else confirm? Was Oxlade-Chamberlain, one of the brightest if you believe the reports, been training with theirt tea, bags of pace and likes to take the defender on. To be fair, the point made above about Pulis etc playing being a hinderance I can see to some aspect it's only going to hold back the young lads who will still be here next year when they probably won't be. Plus Pards can get a view on who he might be able to use next year and then strengthen in other areas
shurlock Posted 19 February, 2010 Posted 19 February, 2010 Was Oxlade-Chamberlain, one of the brightest if you believe the reports, been training with theirt tea, bags of pace and likes to take the defender on. Good spot - doesn't his old man coach at the skates?

Picking the youth team for a reserve fixture only shows them they've got a way to go without giving them a clue as to what's required. Well yes, BUT..in an ideal world you'd play a few "older heads" alongside kids BUT ..a lot of our RESERVES are sitting on the bench every week, and AP isn't likely to risk Thomas, Mills or Perry in a stupid Reserve game when we need them for Cup games. There really aren't so other suitable players available. Connolly and Murty are out. Lancashire and Thomson out on loan, aside from Molyneaux and Pulis ...?? ...the rest.... is what you got.!

You don't need them, pitch up at Staplewood just before kick off, it's free. Good fun as well, I got to see the 2008/9 relegation team (almost) all playing together in the reserves in 2007/8, for instance, in front of the kind of crowds some of them should get used to.

Cooool! I feel like Ive missed out on a lot.... (despite the dodgy scorelines from the reserves recently) I shall get up there!
