saintkiptanui Posted 16 February, 2010 Share Posted 16 February, 2010 I am a terrible sleeper, every night I suffer from spas attacks where my body and brain don't agree it's time to sleep, constantly wake in a panic thinking I can't breath or move. Usually takes a good two hours to get to sleep, reading is the only thing that gets me to sleep. If I wake early during the week I could sleep frever, at the weekend if I wake at 6am, thats me awake. Sleeping is for the weak.

Jimmy Gabriel's Halo Posted 16 February, 2010 Share Posted 16 February, 2010 for a while now I have had problems sleeping..almost every morning I wake up around 4am and struggle to get back to bed.. I also find it hard to nod off too.... anyone else with problems like this..? ...then don't get out of it in the first place Try varying the time you go to bed. Watch a late night film. A late night may make you a bit more tired the next night meaning you may sleep better. On the other hand, don't worry about it as everyone needs different amounts of sleep, there is no set formula. When Mrs T was PM I believe she got by on less than 6 hours a night. Do not have sex (either with yourself or anybody else) as I am told this raises the adrenalin levels and you will definately not be able to sleep afterwards. Mrs JGH says this keeps her awake. She only tells me this as I work nights. Other tips: do not eat too late in the evening, especially a curry as this will only make you farrt a lot and will keep you, and everyone else in the house, awake. Do not drink too much alcohol, unless you have drunk yourself into oblivion, this will also keep you awake. Paradoxically though I sometimes find a smallish whisky mac and ginger does the trick. Do not get too hot or too cold at night. Use the right tog rating duvet for the time of year or change it if you're too hot or too cold. A mug of warm-hot milk before bedtime will help you sleep. Don't ask me why but it does. HTH and good luck.

It's either too much (so you wake up for a pee at 4am) or too little Failing that the answer is actually very simple... How many hours a day do you spend sitting at a keyboard? The brain ain't getting worked and the body is becoming ESB (his own admission BTW from another thread) Take up fishing or golf or training for the forum match. CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 16 February, 2010 Share Posted 16 February, 2010 What you are describing DD is my everyday reality - the older I get the more I tend to tire earlier in the evening and wake correspondingly earlier in the small hours of the morning . Rarely do I get more than 5 hours sleep a night in total and sometimes much less than that . The flippant replies on here show how those fortunate enough to enjoy a good nights sleep utterly fail to understand how desperate a problem insomnia can be . Sorry I don't have the cure apart obvious stuff like try not to go to bed too early in the evening and avoiding stimulants such as coffee ... etc . If it's any consolation humans can manage surprisingly well on just a few hours sleep and you are almost certainly not 'ill' as I understand it , this is just a natural part of the ageing process I'm afraid . Gigersaint Posted 16 February, 2010 Share Posted 16 February, 2010 I've had a sleep disorder ever since I was involved in a bad road accident 24 years ago. I very rarely get tired in the evenings and will still be wide awake at 3.00am in the morning even when I have to be up for work at 7.30am. Most nights during the working week I'm lucky to get more than 4 hours sleep. However on days when I do not have to be up for work, usually only at weekends, I can sometimes manage to stay asleep for 8 hours, still being awake till 3.00am but get up at 11.00am. After 2 decades of poor sleep it would be nice to at least be used to it but unfortunately most of the time through the working week I can at times still feel knackered and the Doc's haven't been able to offer much help either over the years. RedAndWhite91 Posted 16 February, 2010 Share Posted 16 February, 2010 I won't get tired until about 1am, and then if I don't have to get up the next day I won't see morning. On days where I do have to get up it's a real struggle to get out of bed, and usually takes me a good hour of snoozing my alarm. It's annoying, not tired at night, but almost incapable of waking up in the morning.

The missus does the snoring in our house and every night she insists on a cuddle before sleep, she falls asleep within secnds and I'm left with her dribbling on my arm until I can safely push her aside About a week into the New Year, I decided to cut down on my alcohol consumption. I wanted a change of pace, and for the last 6 weeks have hardly drunk more than a couple of glasses of red wine in total. Guess what, it hasn't changed a bloody thing. I sleep no better, I feel no better, I'm not lighter, or have more or less energy. For the last few years, instead of listening to radio drama at the time it is transmitted, I often record it and burn it to CD. If I find I can't sleep I pop a CD into a bedside player, and listen away. Almost certainly I'll be asleep in 5 minutes whether I want to or not. It now works so well, it has almost become something that Pavlov would have experimented with. No CD, no sleeping. Pop CD on, sleep occurs almost immediately. I don't suggest you go to the lengths I do, but try an audio book.
swannymere Posted 16 February, 2010 Share Posted 16 February, 2010 I often wake around 3-4am sit upright and swing my legs over the side of the bed and then rest my head against a cupboard by the side of my bed and then fall asleep again; for about 30 mins in a sitting position! I've been doing this for about 5 years ever since i had severe pneumonia and the only way to sleep was in a chair. Average about 3-4 hours a day and catch up at the weekend in the afternoon. Saint Keith Posted 17 February, 2010 Share Posted 17 February, 2010 i had similar problems to DD. my wife noticed that i used to stop breathing in the night, in between snoring, and would wake up feeling more tired than when i went to bed went to a specialist, and they rigged me up to all sorts of leads and monitors and sensors, and discovered that i stopped breathing over 300 times during the night. so basically i was only ever asleep for about a minute or two they gave me this machine which gently pumps oxygen into you to keep all the airways clear, result of which i have slept like a lamb for the past 3 years, the difference is amazing, and people who know me noticed a huge change in personality as well oh, and a side affect, no snoring for mrs keith to put up with
