SuperMikey Posted 16 February, 2010 Share Posted 16 February, 2010 Realistically, who thinks this would be a good idea? My Dad and I were discussing it in the car on the way home from the P*mpey game the other day and we both agreed that it would be a good idea. We were talking about how the Premier League is incredibly boring nowadays after I made the point that I much prefer watching L1 football to Prem football and how the title is pretty much always contested between Man Utd and Chelsea in the last few years. With the 'big' clubs in the ESL I think the Prem would be a lot more fun, because it would be a lot more even. You'd see teams like Everton, Aston Villa and Tottenham fighting for the title rather than Manure and Chelski like every other season. The ESL teams would be earning enough revenue to keep their rather large financial bubbles intact while smaller english teams would still be earning pretty sizeable amounts of money themselves in the Prem. But how would we decide who to put in the ESL? Would certain countries get more spots in the league (or leagues) than others as in the Champions League? It's certainly a tricky problem, but I think it could really rejuvinate english football as well as the football of other teams in Europe.
oxfordshire_saint Posted 16 February, 2010 Share Posted 16 February, 2010 It should never happen. Yes the Premier League would be more competetive and some of the other teams would benefit, but the league as whole would become a far less attractive proposition. Of course the "big four" have a bit of a monopoly on the Champs League spots, but it's up to clubs like Villa, City, Spurs, Everton etc to step up to the plate and compete. This season is a prime example, with Liverpool's form earlier on giving them a great opportunity. Fact is, less people would watch with no "big 4", the TV companies would then offer less money around, the better players would all bugger off to the Super League for more cash and the quality would drop. I'm sure the fans would have something to say too. We'd lose some of the games biggest derbies and the travel would cost a fortune for those in the Super League. All in all, it sounds like a good idea unless you look at the bigger picture, then it should become apparent that it's a bit pie-in-the-sky. Perhaps change the Champions League into a round robin format instead? Then it actually is a "League" rather than a cup.
Arizona Posted 16 February, 2010 Share Posted 16 February, 2010 Unfeasible for several reasons. 1) It's unfair that teams such as the 'big four' would get into the ESL because the Prem is "boring". Teams like Everton, Spuds and Villa would be rightly upset at not having a shot at the big prize. 2) The Prem without the 'big four' would lose most of it's appeal to neutral viewers, especially those abroad. They wont be tuning in in Beijing to watch Wigan against Hull. 3) Football would just lose further grip on reality. The best clubs in Europe in their own "Super" competition is a bit much IMO. I want to see football moving back towards it's grass routes. I'd like to see rules such as wage capping, a limit on foreign players on the pitch and having a rule that players must stay within the catchment area they were born or educated in until they're 18. Ponty Posted 16 February, 2010 Share Posted 16 February, 2010 4) Our 5 year plan would have to become a 6 year plan.
