Nineteen Canteen Posted 15 February, 2010 Share Posted 15 February, 2010 Do you need a reason??? My dad thought it would be a good idea to move the family to Havent when I was 11, I walked round the town with my saints shirt as I didn't know about the rivalry, after being chased by 4 or5 teenage skates back to my house I did realise, I blame my dad for letting me out in a saints shirt. It was the only place I ever lived which I hated, weird insular people. The very definition of irony.

Nineteen Canteen Posted 15 February, 2010 Share Posted 15 February, 2010 LOL - You lost me with that last comment about knowing plenty of protestant Celtic fans. I hate to spoil your idealist world, but the hatred between Southampton and Portsmouth is one which is felt by many. Look at the people who were causing trouble on Saturday, alot of them were 'shirters' or 'beer monsters' who normally would not go for that kind of trouble but their pure hatred meant things spilled over. And I can promise you that 95% of Saints fans would always want P*mpey to fail in any competition they entered. Oh sh!t, I have just fallen for your trolling. Felt by many and unexplainable by that same many. There is a growing band of younger fans in Glasgow who support teams because they choose to support that team not because it's catholic or otherwise. At least in Glasgow the prejudice can be explained if not understood but down here its a war without agenda or purpose.

I cheer when they concede and would like nothing more than all those people close to me to suffer when they crash and burn. They temporarily stole our place as the highest placed team in Hampshire, but this will soon be put right, and i will f***ing love it

Ponty Posted 15 February, 2010 Share Posted 15 February, 2010 I always want their footy team to lose, that's only natural, and I can't wait until we're back above them again. Also, I'm not particularly keen on the city itself. I worked near the Eastern Road for a couple of years and avoided the city centre like the plague and still do. However, I'm no more likely to set foot in Shirley, Weston, Milbrook, etc. without having my shots first. I know a couple of Pompey supporters and they're decent blokes who enjoy the banter and give and take it with the same good grace as me. On that note, there are resident PFC fans here who can banter and debate with more grace than many of our own fans and that's something that should embarrass a few here. Currently, I'm wishing the worst for the club basically because of the lies and b*llsh*t coming from the boardroom which is nothing short of cheating, IMO, but that's nothing personal towards the fans, I just think it won't stop unless someone stops it. Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 16 February, 2010 Share Posted 16 February, 2010 When I was 6 I went to Pompey for the first time with my parents, to see the HMS Warrior. I saw a kid on our trip with a Pompey shirt, so I befriended him, the took him to the back of the ship and battered him. Next time I went I was 14. Spent the day beating up grannies and disabled people. That felt good. At 17, I utterly battered a Pompey fan in my home town. I left him with his blue blood trickling down the street. Don't know if he died. Don't care if he died. It felt like it validated me. For the remainder of my mid 20's I have spent it sat in my bedroom, thinking of ways that I can **** them up. Obsession. Maybe. But I hate them so much. I remember my Mum once told me I couldn't go around hurting Pompey fans. So I hurt her. Imixed sugar and boiling water and threw it over her face. Silly bint, she won't stop me again. I hate them. I hope they die. I am also rock hard and love showing off how hard I am on forums. Bet you're all scared of me now... Ps. I hate Pompey. *this is a dramatisation of the Pompey Haters, a new program based around the lives of some retarded Saints fans on a crusade to become some of the biggest mongs on the planet. PS. W***wood makes me want to puke but I'm led to believe that's not an emotion confined to fans of SFC. Bingo...spot on... The point here is that Pompey shouldn't have had had their transfer embargo lifted if they are trading whilst insolvent. Three of their goalscorers really shouldn't have been plaything for them. If they survive, are we looking at anther Tevez scandal here? If they survive and say, Wolves, go down in their place, then how fair is it a club keeping within their means goes down and yet a club spending money they don't have, and never could have judging by their ground, gets special treatment... how is that fair and competitive?? This is cheating, end of. The league talks of maintaining the "integrity of the league" where is the integrity of a club being allowed to get deeper and deeper in debt, playing players they shouldn't be allowed to... Yes I was ****ed off we lost to them but more ****ed off that three of their goalscorers really shouldn't have been allowed on the pitch in a Pompey shirt. We lost god knows how many players because we kept within our budget and tried to keep out of debt... If that's not cheating I don't know what is... hugh Posted 16 February, 2010 Share Posted 16 February, 2010 This hatred seems to be a fairly recent thing. For most of my supporting life Pompey have been of no consequence and so I haven't wasted much time thinking about them. I have spent a couple of afternoons at the dockyards looking at Victory and Mary Rose and quite enjoyed my time there. The city was just something to be driven through to get there. When I was in my youth I even went to watch a couple of games at FP that didn't involve Saints. Pompey were in the 4th division at the time and crowds were a bit sparse. I remember one game played in September sunshine that was so boring that I lay down on the terrace, rolled up my jacket as a pillow and went to sleep. I should stress that was because our driver was a skate, so we had to wait for him. So, I don't actually hate the Skates, it is more pity really. Even more acute now that the end of the line is fast approaching them. The natural order of things will soon be restored.
INFLUENCED.COM Posted 16 February, 2010 Share Posted 16 February, 2010 Hate could be considered too strong a word but this hating is it face to face ? I'm sure the majority of us have been in the company of their fans outside of a match day, do we dislike them that much we leave or do we indulge in some banter, me, I go for banter. When I first left school I was a drivers mate and Tuesdays and Thursdays was Portsmouth, travelled all over the town on a very regular basis and although some exceptions, in the main, the majority were not very nice people and that was us bringing them something they wanted ! So, Football aside I genuinely don't believe the people of Portsmouth are pleasant that said, they don't evoke enough emotion in me to stand behind a barricade and shout obscenities but would join in a song on the terrace(except on a string) because I believe that falls under the category of banter. I have never understood Football violence and when ever I watch documentarys on Chimpanzees, it seems to mirror that behaviour, when one or two become a little unecessary it descends into the whole group running back and forth shouting and screaming, even in the midst of it all excitement levels get so high some hug, yet rarely nothing of any consequence occurs, except of course when CCTV is reviewed and banning orders and fines are dished out and you miss a trip to Wembley etc...for what exactly ?, strange imo

Gudz Posted 16 February, 2010 Share Posted 16 February, 2010 Southsea front is actually really nice in the summer. Shame it's overshadowed by the overcrowded and unfriendly sprawl that is the city of portsmouth. I lived down there for 3 years from 02-05 and I learned to hate the place very quickly. My take on the whole rivalry thing, it's ****ing fierce, and I never truly realised it until I lived among them & experienced the bitterness first hand from the other side of the fence. Nowadays I take a "pig until proven cop" attitude to poopey fans. I accept that among them are decent people and indeed I know a fair few, but if I see one of them in a pub here in London, or wherever, I'll avoid them like the plague & take the instant attitude that they're a wrong 'un. Rational but cautious, you might say. Still, having a chip on the shoulder about a dock strike that never actually happened (and they KNOW this, trust me) can only make them an evil breed really. For me this is personified even worse outside the city in god forsaken places like Chavant & Grotspot, and to some degree even parts of Fareham. This rivalry is deep seated & fierce. Anyone who thinks otherwise is deluded.
londonsaint1604 Posted 16 February, 2010 Share Posted 16 February, 2010 Because I'm not from Southampton originally I don't mind the place really. I think it's an alright town, not all that different from Southampton, although of course I do prefer your town and would still live their if I could. Also I have a begrudging respect for some pompey fans as they seem to have the same passion for their football club as what I encountered in Southampton. When you think about it we're not all that different really - roughly similar sized clubs with similar 'ups and downs' over the course of our histories and both proper community clubs on the south coast in Hampshire. Maybe that's why the rivalry is so fierce.

Wiltshire Saint Posted 16 February, 2010 Share Posted 16 February, 2010 I am 54 years old and I have never even said the word Portsmouth out loud. My mum once came back from a shopping trip with a bag from a shop in Portsmouth. I couldn't help it, I just hit her. Not too hard, but enough for it to be felt. Then she told me that someone gave her the bag and I felt terrible. I found out which friend of hers gave her the bag and ended up ringing them in the early hours of morning, ****ed and calling them c*nts. You are one sick man and I feel sorry for you. A lot of people dislike Portsmouth, some even hate them, but to start beating your own mum up is the work of a deranged lunatic. You really do need some serious help and I would urge you to seek it as soon as you can. I don't think your issues are about Portsmouth or football or anything other than mental health issues. Liquidshokk Posted 16 February, 2010 Share Posted 16 February, 2010 (edited) The game against them opened my eyes a bit to all this. I mean Ive never been a fan of the skates (The fact I think their city centre is better than ours just makes it worse) but I didnt realise just how extreme the hatred is. During the game I saw an old skate in a saints seat close to being physically attacked, a saints chav on the way to the exit throwing coins at the pompey players with force as they left the pitch (really no need for that as it could kill someone) and the level of abuse and bad language thrown at Avram Grant as he left the pitch definately made me feel uncomfortable. He looked up and applauded us but quickly put his hands down when the attack started! All quite shocking if you ask me. Rivalry, great, Animalistic violence aint' so saintly. Junior Mullet Posted 16 February, 2010 Share Posted 16 February, 2010 The scenes on Saturday and some of the posts on here are embarassing. I can't imagine anyone is proud of the video on Youtube - our fans looked stupid. Saying their fans look like downs sufferers etc. is also pretty sad and pretty blinkered. Personally I've always thought SMS is full of weird looking people but it doesnt bother me. I would have more respect for people like SRS if they just arranged to meet a few of the Pompey boys and have a proper fight. I have no problem with that - consenting adults enjoying themselves without harming innocent people or their property. Web insults and a few insults behind police lines/railings is pretty weak though. Soft. Go on Stu - I'm sure you could find a few willing Pompey fans on-line, you could have a proper fight within an hour I reckon. BTW I am all for banter, insult and intimidation within the ground where it can actually impact on the football to our advantage.

Beer_please Posted 16 February, 2010 Share Posted 16 February, 2010 I would have more respect for people like SRS if they just arranged to meet a few of the Pompey boys and have a proper fight. They've been doing that on the Continent for years, especially in Eastern Europe. It wouldn't surprise me if SRS was one of the people I saw on youtube earlier. There are all these fans trying to pull down the fencing to get nearer Pompey and the police line around them, then the fence falls down clearing the way and they just carry on standing there pointing and shouting - no interest whatsoever in actually doing anything. That's not to say I think they should go and attack people, but I agree with you that most of it is web insults and shouting behind police lines throwing the odd coin. If they wanted to organise a fight they easily could away from the stadium, the police and the fans that just want to watch the game and have a laugh.
