I have been doing the old BBC Predictor.

I have been as accurate to form as I absolutely can be - ie. taking current league position and recent (last eight game form into account).

I can't list all the results here but this is what happens.

If we win each of our games (but draw away at Norwich) on the 13th March, having beaten Leeds, we are twelve points off the plays offs...

So it's game up.

Or is it... because just ten days later, because of the way the fixtures work, if we win our games (again assuming all other teams play to form) we are just six points off the play-offs.

With eight games to go.

And our run in is pretty straightforward you know.... have a look.

Now, I know this is all hocum BUT I am in blinding form on my predictions at the moment. I am 'in form' on the horses and my football bets - I backed Saints to win the JPT at 13/2 and have now cleared a tidy sum on the day by backing Carlisle at 13/8... ;) Punters will know this feeling well. It's an orchid feeling (rare and beautiful...)

And I have been as genuine to form as I think it is possible to be - not fluke results, Norwich winning most of their games, Leeds and Charlton likewise, teams above beating teams below them in the league, unless away where score draws might out if the teams are closely matched.

My point is this. The table looks bad for the next month until 13th March, but just ten days later we're in the hunt.

So just don't give up the faith until then... :)

Seriously, try it.

(NB. we do have to win all games bar Norwich, but even a draw with Leeds and we are still only 8 off with 8 to go).

8 games to make up 8 points on those in the top 6.....

hmmmmmmmmmmmm

I really think that pardew has no idea what his best team is..which is quite annoying

I think it played Saturday!

Edit: With Connolly fit he gets in for Papa or Antonion who fight for one place.

I do..but you know full well that 75% of the back line will be changed again this weekend and Puncheon will start

so..about half of the team will probably change

i cant do these predictor things because no matter the team i am just like ''yeah we wil beat them'' and we end up having amazing bursts of form where we get maximum points in the run up to close season! haha :D

Put it this way if we need 15 from our last five games they are:

Yeovil away

Oldham home

Carlisle home

Gills away

Southend home

Which of those do we not win by two clear goals?

You would have thought so but the obvious does not happen all the time

indeed...remember, we have no right to beat anyone in this league..so why assume that is 15 points in the bag beggers belief

I don't assume, but all those games are extremely winnable and we should be ashamed if we don't win them at the end of the season with our resources.

Some of these lower clubs will be fighting to stay in League 1 as well

In 1966 when we got promoted our results were

English Division 2 (old) Huddersfield 2-0 Southampton 08-01-1966

English Division 2 (old) Southampton 3-1 Derby 29-01-1966

English Division 2 (old) Portsmouth 2-5 Southampton 05-02-1966

English Division 2 (old) Bury 1-3 Southampton 19-02-1966

English Division 2 (old) Southampton 2-2 Norwich 26-02-1966

English Division 2 (old) Southampton 0-1 Birmingham 05-03-1966

English Division 2 (old) Wolves 1-1 Southampton 12-03-1966

English Division 2 (old) Southampton 1-1 Rotherham 19-03-1966

English Division 2 (old) Southampton 3-1 Middlesbro 02-04-1966

English Division 2 (old) Bristol C 0-1 Southampton 08-04-1966

English Division 2 (old) Southampton 2-2 Bristol C 11-04-1966

English Division 2 (old) Southampton 1-0 C Palace 16-04-1966

English Division 2 (old) Southampton 3-2 Cardiff 20-04-1966

English Division 2 (old) Preston 1-1 Southampton 23-04-1966

English Division 2 (old) Southampton 1-0 Charlton 30-04-1966

English Division 2 (old) Plymouth 2-3 Southampton 07-05-1966

English Division 2 (old) Leyton Orient 1-1 Southampton 09-05-1966

English Division 2 (old) Man City 0-0 Southampton 18-05-1966

18 Games 9 Wins 7 Draws 2 Losses

Points 34 with 3 for a win

and again in 1978

English Division 2 (old) Mansfield 1-2 Southampton 14-01-1978

English Division 2 (old) Southampton 3-1 Notts Co 21-01-1978

English Division 2 (old) Burnley 3-3 Southampton 04-02-1978

English Division 2 (old) Southampton 2-3 Millwall 11-02-1978

English Division 2 (old) Southampton 2-1 Sheff Utd 25-02-1978

English Division 2 (old) Sunderland 0-0 Southampton 04-03-1978

English Division 2 (old) Southampton 2-0 C Palace 11-03-1978

English Division 2 (old) Bolton 0-0 Southampton 18-03-1978

English Division 2 (old) Southampton 4-1 Charlton 25-03-1978

English Division 2 (old) Southampton 3-1 Bristol R 27-03-1978

English Division 2 (old) Cardiff 1-0 Southampton 29-03-1978

English Division 2 (old) Southampton 5-0 Blackburn 01-04-1978

English Division 2 (old) Fulham 1-1 Southampton 07-04-1978

English Division 2 (old) Hull 0-3 Southampton 11-04-1978

English Division 2 (old) Southampton 2-2 Oldham 15-04-1978

English Division 2 (old) Luton 1-2 Southampton 22-04-1978

English Division 2 (old) Leyton Orient 1-1 Southampton 25-04-1978

English Division 2 (old) Southampton 0-0 Tottenham 29-04-1978

18 Games 9 Wins 7 Draws 2 losses

So if we got the same this season we would be on 78 - 10

Which would be reasonable considering our awful start

34 Points and that was automatic promotion form

I actually think all that might be possible...if, and only if we get some momentum going by winning at least 4 out of the 5 games we have in the next fortnight.

What better way to launch that momentum than a win at a team who've won their last 11 consecutive home games?

Where we have a pretty good record and always enjoy open, high-scoring games? I predict a draw but I'd settle for a win... ;)

Nope, only Gillingham, who have the worst defence in the league, the others are comfortably mid-table... ;)

I thought we had to play some of these teams

16 Southend 30 -9 32

17 Hartlepool 30 -10 32

18 Oldham 28 -10 32

19 Exeter 31 -12 31

20 Gillingham 31 -12 30

21 Brighton 30 -14 30

22 Tranmere 30 -22 30

23 Wycombe 31 -25 24

24 Stockport 29 -31 17

We do but bear in mind it's where they are when we play them I am working on. I also think we should beat those teams if we play to our full potential. I would be very disappointed if we don't beat Wycombe next week, for example...

Of course we are going to beat some but usually there will be a few draws along the way to kick us in the goollies

And with the Pressure mounting the team may not perform as we hope

Two games missing where Brighton and Oldham, no idea why with Brighton as it got moved ages away.

I tried to be unbiased but it's pretty hard, went with favourites most the time hence the bottom four and top two having such good g/d.

Posted

I did the predictor the other day with us losing at Norwich and I think drawing with Leeds and Swindon and winning the rest and it left us having to win the missing games against Oldham and Brighton to finish in the play offs where we meet Colchester.

Posted
So what was your prediction for Bristol Rovers v Charlton

and tomorrows three matches

Funnily enough I had Rovers to win that based on Charltons recent wobble- you'll see where I have them finishing above. Today I have Huddersfield to win, Leeds to win and Colchester to win. The scores are immaterial to me as I gave most wins as 1-0 for ease unless I had a real feel for a thumping! Actually that's not totally true, I reflected our goal scoring in our results..like I sat it's all hocum but my main point was that critical period 13-23 March where we go from 12 to 6 points off the play offs with the way the fixtures fall.

Posted

Did the BBC Predictor back in October. Tried to be brutally honest, but still found Saints comfortably making the play-offs. Even then, according to the Predictor, it took until March until we entered the playoff places.

The team's true form is only a few points below where I had them at this stage of the season, so it is still possible. In truth, my gut feeling is that it is just beyond our abilities, and the -10 point penalty really is the killer of this season. However, my gut feeling means nothing. Saints could still do it, and I'd be as pleased as punch to be wrong.

No idea whether we can reach the play offs - but isn't it fun to be looking at the predicter to see if we can rather than to see if we can avoid relegation :)

If we lose to Norwich we could be 1 point off relegation, so it is worth putting that in your pipe !

Posted

Norwich have picked up 41 points from the last 15 games they have played.

I cannot believe people on here are so negative with 18 games to go, especially off the back of a great performance on Saturday. We have some real quality to put back into the side that played so well against the scum, and if we go on a run then we will make it, simple as that. If we don't we won't!

But don't mug yourselves by calling it mid Feb...!

Posted

Until we're mathmatically out of the running for a play-off spot, I won't give up hope, but it's not looking too rosy. Either way I'll be happy with anywhere in the top half of the table this season, that'll actually be a good result IMO, with a big push next season.

A win for Carlisle tonight would be good I think although Huddersfield have a lot of tough games coming up

but

5:30 GOAL - Lee Novak:

Carlisle 0 - 1 Huddersfield

I had a look at Millwall's remaining fixtures, without any real trouble can see them getting another 30 points from their remaining games, that would leave us requiring another 48, ie 16 wins out of 18.

Exactly, in order for any of this to be relevant, Pardew needs to decide his team, and STICK with it. I'd suggest Saturday's with Puncheon and Fonte in.

We have the best squad in L1, so should win every game. However we wont!

Game over this season - dreadful start, now been v.poor for past 2 months (yet to end).

Teams like Leeds (recovered from -15) dont manage to do this with 2 extended poor runs of form.
