We often talk about how passionate and hated the south coast derby is but compared it to the mersey, london and manchester one, we don't get any bone crunching tackles or full blooded rucks.

Is this the reason why its not often talked about outside the Hampshire region because of the powder puff efforts on the pitch.

What do you think?

Not sure why the players don't seem to get stuck in as much as say the merseyside derby which is more a battle royale than football. But for the fans i personally think you'd be hard pressed to find a bigger rivalry anywhere.

1. We're not in the same city so don't mix anywhere near as much. The London clubs live and work with eachother. They have no choice but to get along.

2. It's a pretty rare fixture so tensions build up without a match to relieve it. Compare that the old firm who play eachother usually about 5 or 6 times a year. Each match isn't quite the same occasion when there's another one on the way in a few months.

3. We have no other rivals. Compare with the teams in the north who each have about 4 or 5 teams they could call rivals.

Agree with the OP. There were very few hard tackles going in for a real 'derby' yesterday. However, think it was Hammond that did the crunching tackle in the 2nd half and got booked - that was more like a derby tackle (although he shouldn't have been booked IMHO).

However, in all other aspects, a very satisfying derby ('cept the score)

From a player's point of view, the east midlands derby seems far more intense than ours was yesterday. Always kicking lumps out of each other. Fan

Intensity is about the same though.

The player on the pitch who seemed the most passionate about the occasion was Lallana and it's probably not a coincidence that he came through the youth them in the way that Gerrard, Carragher and other dirty northerners have done.

The pure passion, venom and hatred pouring out of the stands yesterday was certainly up a notch compared to the last lot of meetings at SMS.

There was 5 years of anger and frustration let loose and I for one found it rather cathartic.
