70's Mike Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Sorry but Lallana did not have a great game if he had we would have won. I am not in anyway blaming him for the loss but he did have a couple of chances to score totally disagree it was only when he had ball we looked dangerous, we need to hold onto him not moan about him. never seen him tackle so much and he was not the only one guilty of missing chances, one comment to AP find someone else to take corners and free kicks from out wide. Crpwd in all areas was brilliant the club was offically re born today even in defeat we were winners.
Window Cleaner Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Spurs fan I reside with on seeing W******d: "I bet he f()cking stinks" I thought we had a smellovision TV for a moment :-o Anyway, definitely wasn't a 4-1 game - but for me there were 3 major differences between the two teams; 1. Pace upfront 2. The finishing 3. Ageing centre halves - not that Pompey's back four covered itself in glory, but Perry, whilst doing his best, REEEEEALLLY doesn't have it any more. Fonté and Seabourne would haved laughed Skate's attack off the pitch today.
Toomer Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Been home about half an hour and had a chance to reflect, they were not 3 goals better than us if anyone tells you they were they must have watched a different game than me. IMO we lost it down to a number of missed chances and a lack of pace in defence. One thing I will ask AP get some else working on taking corners on the training ground next week we can not have our top goal scorer taking them. I have had a text from my daughter who is working in her office in town today and she said it has all kicked off.
sidthesquid Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Thoughts on today 1. Very proud of our boys - no disgrace 2. Undone by our own ambition in the end, pushing too many up & getting caught 3. Difference in the end was their pace on the break BUT 4. You only get those sort of players for big, big dosh & 5. 3 of their goalscorers should not have been playing at all if there was any justice in the PL. 2 loanees signed when the PL relented over signings, despite their being insolvent & another one who should have had a transfer fee paid by now except that they have stitched up a poor skint French club. So I feel sort of alright about it all in a bitter sort of way & can comfort myself that they will get their come-uppance before too long
Um Bongo Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Been home about half an hour and had a chance to reflect, they were not 3 goals better than us if anyone tells you they were they must have watched a different game than me. Let's weight this up: Lambert takes all but one set piece = We dont score Harding takes one set peice = Lambert scores. We must have one other player who can take a corner/free kick?
joffystevens Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 The difference was composure in the penalty area, lallana snatched at a couple of chances he had, but Papa Waigo i wish that header in the 1st half had fallen to any other person in the ground. Also even though the majority of his passes were miss placed o'hara seemed to always be the 1st to it, we could of done with some one following him round not giving him the space. Truely gutted to lose to skate bastards but we will have the last laugh!!! COYR
Huffton Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 We outsung 'The best fans in the world' We out played Pompey for 70 minutes. We could have been 3-0 up at half time. Nothing to be embarresed about. Excellent performance on the pitch, and from the fans. The goal in the northam was mental! They are awful, and won't have a club at the end of the season - Let them brace beating a L1 side. Sums it up perfectly, and had we gone in 3-0 up as we could have done, it would be a very different scoreline now. Well done today Saints, proud to be Red n White. As for the blue few, you really do have nothing to crow about, best fans in the world? Guess they couldn't get tickets then...
John B Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 totally disagree it was only when he had ball we looked dangerous, we need to hold onto him not moan about him. never seen him tackle so much and he was not the only one guilty of missing chances, one comment to AP find someone else to take corners and free kicks from out wide. MLT was great because the could score goals thats my point.
saintsmike25 Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 This game vindicates Pardew's 3 defensive signings of Seaborne/Fonte and even Ostemabor to some degree. Whilst Jaidi is a rock at the back him and Perry don't have the pace against decent opponents and they tried there best but couldn't keep up with Pompey's breaks when we were pushing for another equaliser and it WAS the reason they backed off Quincy twice for two of the goals. The game was a great spectacle and every player did the club proud despite the result and the difference was 3 players O'Hara,James, Quincy and possibly a fourth in Bel Haj. What we must remember is despite all our hate of Portsmouth I think it would be sad to see them go out of business as we were in this position too, let them have there day. We'll be like a wounded beast and this result will hopefully fire up the team for a win against Norwich, the scoreline flattered Portsmouth who were second best until we ran out of gas and there pace and fitness started to show. The best thing was the atmosphere I hope we can get crowds like that again for other games it made everyone proud to be a Southampton fan, and the look on Marcus's face told the story he's a true red and white he's got the Saints addiction. COYR!
doddisalegend Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Just back, like others have said we played well for long parts of the game. In the end it was the pace they had up front that won it for them our defence just couldn't keep up. LOL the pompey fans celebrating like they just beat Man u at Old Trafford instead of a team two divisions below them playing a second string back for. If we played like that evey week we would slaughter most teams in our division. Papa and lambert up front is the way to go for the rest of the season I think. In the end I sort of new we wouldn't win this one I'm not to upset becuase I'd still rather support saints than that shower down the road any day.

FMPR Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Pardew out is what I say, how could he lose to such a bunch of no hopers

Sylvia Saint Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Lalana had a good game today. If he could finish properly and ping a ball correctly then we may have won that match and I would have said he had a fantastic game. Have to say we need to get someone other than Lambert to take free kicks and corners! Don't understand that decision at all!!??? In all we were undone by a goalie who ****ed up at times but got away with it, but who also kept them in the game with some great saves and O'Hara who bossed the midfield 2nd half and also the pace of Quincy, especially when we were tired and chasing the game. We weren't embarassed, we did well. Play like that every week and we stand a chance of not losing a match for the rest of the season!
Jesus Reigned Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 I was in Block 17 in the Chapel today and the atmosphere was great; never heard so many people singing in there as there were today. We were the better side for 75 minutes; so glad that we got to celebrate a goal as it was mayhem... No luck for the killer second; Perry got studs on it and it looked like Harding was letting it go as it was going wide until the ball hit the ground and span in. Gutted with the Barnard disollowed goal; we were celebrating for at least 20 seconds before we realised it hadn't been given. And also gutted that the programme I bought for a mate got ruined, as I left it under my swat and a cup of coffee got kicked over it when James made the save from Jaidi just before half-time!! Not looking forward to Monday morning in my office in Whiteley, but Saints did us proud; just a shame that the record books will say 4-1.
dubai_phil Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Very proud of that performance today. Al Jazeera had Platt & Souness in the studio who simply could not believe how we were not 3-0 up at half time and the Lallana header For nigh on 70 minutes we played them off the park and showed that they have no bottle. Sure they had pace and composure and quality compared to us, but they WERE poor, the number of balls played direct into touch and mistakes caused by our hassling them. We turned up for a televised game for the first time I can recall and we gave it a damn good go. Won't even go down the "If Only" route - there were many today, but it was clear to anyone watching that IF we'd scored in the first half they would have been trashed. We lost, the result is in the history books, but hell I enjoyed it and sat there in a state of shock and pride. Bloody good effort boys. Now take that into the upcoming games and we could make the playoffs
dubai_phil Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Pardew out is what I say, how could he lose to such a bunch of no hopers I've never done this before on here but today I think I need to say this **** off
Justbelieve Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Should have taken our chances in the first half. Still not convinced by Papa, although he is getting the hang of the offside rule now. The scoreline certainly flattered them and if it hadn't been for David James playing so well,we would be in the next round. Why is Rickie Lambert taking the corners? Surely he should be in the mix to score?
Mase Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 I've never done this before on here but today I think I need to say this **** off Agreed.

Agree lallanas pathetic shot cost us the 1st goal but his skill and passing tore the skates apart at times. James is englands number 1 he proved that today, as for that Quincy i follow him on twitter seemed alrite untill he scored today now i hate him hes so **** abuse him on twitter
Um Bongo Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Pardew out is what I say, how could he lose to such a bunch of no hopers **** off you skate ****. **** off back into your hole.

joffystevens Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Pardew out is what I say, how could he lose to such a bunch of no hopers how can you say that?? we were beaten by a team 37 places above us. I'm sure everyone here didn't wanted to lose to them, especially Pardew. We dominated at times but didn't take our chances, end of.
Justin C Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 I don't want Lambert taking corners but but I think Pawdew said he is the best crosser of the ball. But I say pick someone who is likely to start and get them out on the training field every afternoon until he can do it.
dubai_phil Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 I don't want Lambert taking corners but but I think Pawdew said he is the best crosser of the ball. But I say pick someone who is likely to start and get them out on the training field every afternoon until he can do it. yes but Jaidi nearly scored form one in the first half which our TV commentators reckoned was one of the best corners they'd seen this season. Some of his other efforts failed to beat the first man but that one wicked corner shows why

suewhistle Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Mercurial mental process is what makes great strikers. Nah, I reckon it's instinct. Some of the most stupid people have been great strikers.
Alright Dave Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 yes but Jaidi nearly scored form one in the first half which our TV commentators reckoned was one of the best corners they'd seen this season. Some of his other efforts failed to beat the first man but that one wicked corner shows why I think Lambert explained the tactics behind it in mid week already. Pardew felt with the cup team including Perry/Fonte, Jaidi, Thomas, Hammond etc... .they had enough good people in the air to allow Lambert to take the kicks whilst James was not in the team. Personally i don't agree with it, your top scorer should not be taking all set pieces around the box, but hey that didn't lose us today's game. I think the lads did well, in the main the tactics worked we just ran out of steam and their pace on the counter got the better of our old legs at the back. I only saw positives out of todays performance, Pompey may take the **** out of the scoreline, but they didn't deserve that and we will have the last laugh here i am sure....
Saints foreva Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 I don't want Lambert taking corners but but I think Pawdew said he is the best crosser of the ball. CanadaSaint Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Nah, I reckon it's instinct. Some of the most stupid people have been great strikers. Nice to see that. People used to say that about us goalies.
beavis17 Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Back to the league now and we're 18 points off of the playoffs as things stand today with 18 games to go....
alpine_saint Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Missed the game completely due to a prior committment, but was devastated when I heard the result having seen we were still 0-0 at half time. I read the BBC report: seems to think the scoreline deeply flattered Pompey and we could have killed the game off onthe strength of the first half. Their second goal seems to have been the killer, we simply tried to get back in the game in the last 15 mins and overcommitted (as you do in the cup). Interested to know the circumstances of the second goal.
Justin C Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 I suspect Puncheon will play a part in corners when he is actually allowed to play a match. I hope so because when Lambert was taking kicks from around 30 yrds from crossing poistions and it broke down he found himselve chasing back to defend.
NickG Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 outplayed them for an hour out sung them for the game - they very very subdued, Luton were more passionate prem against league 1 defenders - tired after pressing game - told in the end

Boys played well, played themselves into the ground tho
alpine_saint Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 The result f**king hurts though. I can just imagine those smug inbred c**ts in the away end.
supersonic Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 I'm sorry people but Wayne Thomas lost us the game today. For their second goal when Owusu-Abeyie picked up the ball 30 yards from there goal, he allowed him to run all the way to the edge of our box without challenging him. He just kept backing-off and backing-off. How many times last year did we get punished for that? once it became 2-1 we were always going to be left open for the break whilst we were pushing for the equaliser.
Alright Dave Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 I hope so because when Lambert was taking kicks from around 30 yrds from crossing poistions and it broke down he found himselve chasing back to defend. This is a good point and goes onto confirm that Pardew has improved the side with signings. Its unfortunate that at least Fonte, Connelly and Puncheon were not available for todays game, i believe they could have made a huge difference with there added pace and quality. I just hope the performance and endeavour the team showed today shines through into our league form as the playoffs are still a slim possibility.
suewhistle Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 I think the lads did well, in the main the tactics worked we just ran out of steam and their pace on the counter got the better of our old legs at the back. I only saw positives out of todays performance, Pompey may take the **** out of the scoreline, but they didn't deserve that and we will have the last laugh here i am sure.... My view, more or less. Nobody let themselves down, that's the important thing. Time for an apperitivo even if I am still "relaxed" from lunchtime. Fellow fans, please make sure there's a good turn out for the next home game, I think the players deserve it.

How many times last year did we get punished for that? once it became 2-1 we were always going to be left open for the break whilst we were pushing for the equaliser. Ok he's not a right back and certainly not our first choice RB. But lLets bare in mind we have a few injuries and a large number of players cup tied, he nearly put us one up but James made a great save, so i am not going to slate him or any other player. You could equally blame Lallana for missing so many guilt edge chances, but again i won't i thought he had a great game and was just missing the final finish. We are after all a league 1 team and not a premiership one!!!!
exit2 Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Pace done us basically! Thomas, Jahdi, Perry not quick enough but in my eyes played too deep. But deep down knew a result was a great hope, but 4-1 is a ****e score line that didnt reflect the game
The Worm Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Pardew out is what I say, how could he lose to such a bunch of no hopers arnt you an Arsenal fan?

wessex saint Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Other than the odd ‘Play Up Poopey’ chant, Saints came across louder throughout the majority of the match hands down. Well done to those of you that went. So, I am gutted. The score line is flattering, and Saints were on the whole the better team. But part of me is very pleased… The players gave it there all, the managers tactics were very good, the stadium was full, the pitch looked great, Liebherr looked like he was having a great time and most of all the Saints fans were great! On top of being loud I saw balloons, makeup, lots of colour, banners, comedy money. It was great! Oh how I love this club so much Every time they gave it 'Play up Pompey' we joined in with 'Pay up Pompey'. Shut the fishy ****s right up but probably came across on the box as Pompey singing when in fact it was us
Um Bongo Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 The result f**king hurts though. I can just imagine those smug inbred c**ts in the away end. It was hard. Very hard. Still, I got some loose change from them. I thought they would need it, but oh well. More money for the beer fund. Although LOL at the pompey fan who threw a bottle of water, which succeded in travelling 2 meters and soaking the chump a few to the side. They really are an inbred bunch, Fat, spotty, pikeys.

We are after all a league 1 team and not a premiership one!!!! I know we had our first choice defenders out but that doesn't change the fact that he was 5 yards away from Quincy-Awusu when he got the ball, and just backed-off instead of puttign a challenge in. if you challenge and 1) win the ball, then we've got the ball inside the final 3rd and have a chance of scoring. 2) commit a foul, it gives our players time to get back and re-group whilst they take the free-kick. Backing-off and lettign their bloke run 70yards unchallenged puts us under pressure, which showed.
toofarnorth Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Sorry but Lallana did not have a great game if he had we would have won. I am not in anyway blaming him for the loss but he did have a couple of chances to score Couldn't disagree more. Lallana was my man of the match and as well as creating lots had a few good chances where he did very little wrong. His header would have been in against 99% of goalkeepers, it truly was a world class save. He made tackles all over the pitch and no one on the pitch today worked harder than he did. Playing like he did today he would be knocking on the door of many a premiership squad. PS also thought Spiderman and Hammond were immense in midfield.
dubai_phil Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 So one corner a game that is half decent is good enough is it?? No of course it isn't. You could see the logic behind it, just didn't work MORE than once. Anyone wathcing the game again - just count how many times we failed to get ANY cross from anywhere beyond the first defender - that is something to work on. Mind you it was one decent corner more than I recall since MLT retired :-)
