saintant Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Great effort from all our players who could not have given more. The only thing you could accuse us of is wanting to win it a little too much as the match wore on and throwing caution to the wind. Inevitable that they would hit us on the counter with their pace after 75 minutes against a tiring and generally slow back four. Had we taken our chances we would have won because we'd not have needed to chase the game. All in all a very good performance but as others have said a totally unrealistic scoreline.
CanadaSaint Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Just one thing I have noticed though, Lallana frustrates the hell out of me, I like him and I think he is tricky but in front of goal his efforts are really weak. He frustrates me, too, but he's going to be a hell of a player. He tries to be too clever with his chances instead of just whacking them in.
Justin Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 not a case of 'the better team winning'. Saints deserved something from the game, but hey ho!! gutted we lost though, lot of stick at work on monday to look forward to.
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Great performance against a team 2 divisions above us, even if they are doing so badly at that level. Difference was they took their chances but we've nothing to reproach ourselves for. It IS galling to see them win so well at St Mary's but our chance will come and, when we're playing at the same, and then superior, level to them, it'll be our chance to inflict proper beatings. If they still exist, that is...!
Saint Billy Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 He frustrates me, too, but he's going to be a hell of a player. He tries to be too clever with his chances instead of just whacking them in. yep, agreed.
Window Cleaner Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 He frustrates me, too, but he's going to be a hell of a player. He tries to be too clever with his chances instead of just whacking them in. Owusu Abeiye showed him how to do it, hope he was watching.
AlfredKo Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Going all out attack to try to get the goals back. Wouldve been disappointed if they'd have done anything else with 10 mins to go of a cup tie. But at 1-1, was going all out attack a correct option? If we played like we did in the first half at 1-1, I believe we could avoid defeat at least. Any thoughts?
sotonianproud Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 We are an up and coming club, they are a falling club. The balance of power WILL change soon enough so i personally will be looking forward to that , not back at this.
saint phil Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 God we have come a long way this season...I am gutted we didn't bury those earlier chances as with the pace we played defending a lead with tired legs was do-able but chasing it was only ever going to end that way. That said, even my wife, a Man U die-hard and football snob says its our best team she's seen at St Mary's since our opening season there. Now have to bounce back and beat Norwich - play like that every game and we will still squeeze into the playoffs. I don't want to read complaints on tactics, substitutions or anything else - we played the right side and approached the game in the only way we could to really have any chance. Lots of if only moments too. I for one am very proud of the team and the club after that performance.
gaz Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 I never know why we can cope with their pace so well in the first half but so poorly in the second half. Can anyone explain it? Is that because we use long throws too much? Where are our midfielders for those 2nd, 3rd and 4th goals conceded? Energy and fitness, playing football at Prem pace for 75mins was shattering and I was surprised we kept up with them that long. It makes our efforts even greater.
adysaint Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 The 3rd goal was really bad, Bell-endhaj didn't even want to score, it was a bit like Parks goal for Man U v Ars last week. If he passes it and they tap it in fair enough... But you should always go to close down the ball...
WealdSaint Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Gutted, But the lads played their hearts out. Owusu Abeiye was class. Amazing that they were allowed to sign him considering all their financial woes. Once we were chasing the game it was likely that we would get hit on the break. Hope Barnard gets a slice of luck soon
sperm_john Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 we basically got raped on the counter attack all game, still, southampton is gonna be an unpleasent place to be for a pompey fan at the mo with nearly 30 thousand p1ssed off saints fans
adj250770 Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 It is galling as most have said - maybe if the High Court hearing on March 1st means they go out of existence we'll be reinstated to play in the QF?!?!!?!? ;-) Have to say one thing though - I thought Lambert was absolutely outstanding today, I'm so glad we've got such a top, top player in his finishing, general play and awareness of others. But please Mr. Pardew................ GET HIM IN THE BOX - NOT TAKING POXY FREE KICKS AND CORNERS!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!
Psycrow Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Its a bitter-sweet day for them today. Word has come through that the Premier League will not advance their broadcast revenue for next year. http://www.football365.com/story/0,17033,8652_5947135,00.html
CanadaSaint Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 But at 1-1, was going all out attack a correct option? If we played like we did in the first half at 1-1, I believe we could avoid defeat at least. Any thoughts? As I said earlier I think we overdid it and paid the price. We'd proven that we could unlock their defence easily, so there was no need to throw caution to the winds and leave our entire right flank open. AP should have seen that and adjusted - it was right in front of him.

Norm Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Just home, enjoyed the game. Crowd were great! Wish we had taken 2 out of the four good chances in first half. Took my 10 year old grandson to his first local derby. Not sure I would do it again. Surrounded in the Chapel by pure hatred, every swear word imaginable. The moron behind me could not speak without including a four letter word. Spent most of the game standing shouting abuse. Took no notice of loads of young children sat in front of him. Took the shine off the day for me.
Killers Knee Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 we didn't take our chances, they took theirs, could have easily been 4-4.

Window Cleaner Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 we didn't take our chances, they took theirs, could have easily been 4-4. Nah, if Papa and Lallana had taken the first half chances Skate were dead and buried.
saintjay77 Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 absolutly gutted about the scoreline. the blue few will have bragging rights for a while despite there team being outplayed for 70% of the game. If this report shows that poopy are and have been trading whilst insolvent I wonder what the reprocusions in the cup will be? I mean if its proved that they shouldnt have been around at all today would that open the door to re-instate us in the cup? To be honest I think as we got beat on the day then we shouldnt have the chance to get back in but stranger things have happened I suppose. Back to league 1 football will be a bit of a let down now so the rest of the season will be tough on the players and us lot. Off to drown my sorrows and rip poopy apart on fifa 10.

Perennial Underachiever Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 I don't want to read complaints on tactics, substitutions or anything else - we played the right side and approached the game in the only way we could to really have any chance. Lots of if only moments too. I for one am very proud of the team and the club after that performance. Agreed, me too. And the better side lost today - we were much better than them for all of the first half and a lot of the second and were only undone on the break. They are flattered by the scoreline. For the day when we pass them again - if they don't get wound up first.

martin_au Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 quality and pace decided the game. shame about the scoreline but the team played their hearts out papa was a huge threat, antonio did well too just wonder if lallana has learnt something from jamie o'hara...
Ponty Posted 13 February, 2010 Author Posted 13 February, 2010 I don't think we had a bad player on the pitch either, which was nice.

He will have learnt that he isn't good enough for the Premier League because he can't convert simple chances. Lambert will have a lot of phone call this week though,
sotonianproud Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 I don't think we had a bad player on the pitch either, which was nice. Agreed +1
crouchi Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Good first half, some weak shooting from Lallana, Barnard desperately needs a goal. In the end undone by pace and inability to control the game in midfield. When we go to the next level, we'll want more control in the centre
Window Cleaner Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 We were better in large spells, but extremely naive in defence. I know it's a cup tie so score doesn't matter so much in terms of goal difference, but they had a fast attack and the break was always going to get us. Gutting to lose, but the only difference was the pace up front. We bottled too many chances sadly. I don't mind people missing, but it's frustrating when it's always a scuffed shot or mis-control. Oh well, time to improve the league postion. What do you expect, with our regular back 4 we'd have been Ok. Perhaps Fonté would even have put away the cross that James missed and Jaidi put over the bar, just needed to drop to one knee and nod it in.
saintjay77 Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 There will be no sanctions, they'll take administration and a Premier League hand-out. They dont have a choice to take administration as the winding up petition is in place. if the report shows that they are trading whilst insolvent the courts have the choice to liquidate them or to place them into admin. It all depends on how bad the debts are and what chances there are of a buyer satisfying the creditors. If they are liquidated and its proved that they have been trading whilst insolvent for some time then im sure someone will argue that they shouldnt have even played today and we should have had a by to the next round. If that were to happen I still think we should just take the loss today and move on rather than try and argue to get back in the cup. that said i agree with you in that they will get away with anything they want and the prem league will make sure they come out smelling of roses.
Window Cleaner Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 (edited) Good first half, some weak shooting from Lallana, Barnard desperately needs a goal. In the end undone by pace and inability to control the game in midfield. When we go to the next level, we'll want more control in the centre No we controlled midfield, we got hit on the break because our static central defenders had gone forward and the corners, free kicks or long throws (whatever it was) were gifted to them to hit us on the break. But the problem is we could have been 4-0 ahead at the break. We were great first half but as we didn't put our chances away we were always going to pay for the effort necessary to create them. ART Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 So really proud of the players, everyone of them in the starting line up. They almost got a result but as always Pasdieu threw the game away to the Skates with 2 catastrophic substitutions. How many goals have been scored against us this season in the minutes following his screwed up substitutions? Waiguo had the Skates defence completely tied up, Perry lead the defence and held it close together. Then on comes Ba Ba Nerd, followed not by someone like Wooten to keep the defence together, but Holmes who did absolutely nothing. We've got the players to have won, to get into the play offs. Sadly we've a manager who is the tops in throwing games by idiotic substitutions. We deserved more, but they say he who laughs last laughs the longest, so maybe HMRC wil give us our big day. And what's happened to Marcus and Nicolas' wearing Saints scarves at games. Were they scared to run face to face into W E ST W O O D?

Justin Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 according to the echo website there is a stand of outside the stadium with bottles being thrown.
greg_hill Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 It hurts like hell but at least we will still have a club to support before the next round is played. As has been widely noted, we matched them - if not bettered them - for large parts of the game. David James was excellent (git) and but for just slightly better finishing from our boys or slightly less of a good games for James and it could have been so, so different. Still, we did ourselves proud and the players have to look forward to a strong league finish and a day at Wembley. Let us worry about the flak from the blue few. Things will have changed a lot by the next time we meet.
suewhistle Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Sod! I haven't read any comments as I'm just in from an Italian sports bar where I watched the whole match and amused the locals at being a middle aged lady getting decidely worked-up! Although I'm hacked-off at losing I'm not disappointed at how we lost, or in our performance. I was explaining in the the bar that we were the third division team with the 30k+ crowds, and that wasn't the only time this season. Even the commentators on Italian TV were impressed at the atmosphere, the crowd, our performance and the magic of the FA cup which I think that game has done a lot to restore after the pathetic crowds of some of the previous rounds. So a younger Perry would have cut out that pass etc, etc, but I do hope nobody is in too wrist-slitting a mood after that game. The locals here are very familiar with contro-piede (counter attack on the break), but I hope they were as impressed as I was that we never, until the final whistle, gave up trying. Frankly I'm far more disappointed that I'm not in the squad for my women's team for tomorrow's away game.
Rusty Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Seriously though.... I said this during the first half. What are the rules about player registration??? I'm sure that it came up before (Barnard maybe?) that a player had to be registered at a club when the draw was made to be eligible to play in that round. O'Hara was at Spurs when the draw for this round was played. He didn't sign for Pompey again until 29th Jan..... So surely that means he wasn't eligible? No such law, Burnley tried to mention that when Defoe went back to Spurs and scored to put them out of the CCC, but were told where to go.

Jay, All teams that go into administration are basically insolvent. We gave our all, but that little bit of extra quality shone through. We are on the up they are on the way down. I dont want them to go under, i wouldn't want any club to go under. But in this case I would hate that to be our last game against them
Psycrow Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 No such law, Burnley tried to mention that when Defoe went back to Spurs and scored to put them out of the CCC, but were told where to go. It has definitely been mentioned over the last few weeks.
hackedoff Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 We were undone by not scoring in the 1st half when we were well on top. Scoreline flatters them, but not unexpected result (I was OK at 1-2 as it meant 10 points in the Prediction League). Still it hurts. We were undone by starting the game with pace when the game was tight , Pompey finished with pace when the game was stretched. Lambert taking set pieces also a mistake as proved by the one time someone else took over. A fixture I ( being in the minority )did not want, let,s hope it does not wreck the rest of the season.
suewhistle Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Oh yes, another thought. I saw the pictures of the Pompey fans celebrating at the end and thought "aw, bless" in complete sympathy at the **** they are in and how oblivious you can be for a few minutes after a win against your local rivals. But I still chuckled.

Avenue Saint Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 Y wasnt lambert on end of crosses but taking them?? is pardew trying to send out message that unless james plays no one else can cross? davis at fault for 1st goal perhaps. standing shot, should he not have had that covered? perry at fault for other- diving in when he should have closed him down. just unlucky really. not meant to be. last 2 goals mean ****. no defenders, picked us off. thought pardew gambled too early too. up the saints. we'll be back!
gjphilsaint Posted 13 February, 2010 Posted 13 February, 2010 we should have been ahead so that we could close the game down. We chased the game from the goal and got caught out...
