Saints Vs MKDons - Post Match Reaction.

His contribution was ineffective and his final delivery poor. He kept getting caught in possession but that was in part to having a lack of support at times but he reminds me to much of BWP. A weapon in Pardews armoury better released from the bench. Now can I have my shin pad back?

He's much better than BWP - intelligent movement, workrate, commitment, good link play.

He was very good tonight.

Sorry, shin-pad remains confiscated ;)

Thomas is that sort of player watching him against Ipswhich he was constantly sticking in an elbow or pushing people in the back. He's a brute and a bully but sometimes you need a player like that as long as he doesn't get sent off.

Lets face it he is a breeze block with a head and limbs. Should be a permanent fixture in our defence IMO.

BWP and Waigo have a lot in common lots of trickery and running around (admittedly BWP did it more slowly) but both flattered to deceive and both better as subs. I wasn't sitting behind anyone tonight and a nice change of scenery and perspective.

Meh, you're entitled to your opinion but I thought Waigo was MOTM. Won a lot of headers, tracked back well, played some lovely first time passes, linked up very well with Lambert.

Common Benji, I'll give you workrate and commitment but intelligent anything and link play? He is a hardy perennial with regards offside although tonight was clearly a late spring and link play? He gives the ball away to cheaply IMO.

He has played far better than tonight and a hive of industry does not always make a worthy contribution. Forget the shin pad - no use to me now as I just realised Antonio used the club's entire supply of sock tape tonight.

Perhaps that is a sign of how poorly we played overall when it comes down to some first time passes and one on one headers and shouldn't he track back well anyway? Our full backs were more worthy IMO and beyond them we were much of a muchness.

Agree - Papa was my MoTM closely followed by Lallana. Jaidi should be dropped - awful game, awful mistakes and incredibly shaky - we can't have players like that in our side.

Brilliant result. Just seen the highlights on SSN. The first goal was class, the second comical. A good mix for an evening's entertainment. Though Waigo especially and Lallana were fantasic tonight. Honnorable mentions to Lambert, Thomas and Antonio. Infact the more I think about it, every deserves a mention. Jaidi looked pretty shakey at times, but won stuff in the air.

No way! Look at Waigo's stats. Much more of a footballing brain too. He score goals & assists a lot. Changed the Stockport game. Don't remember BWP being so influential. How many key games has Papa won? (JPT games, last min sub appearances winning games, vital assists, Southend away, etc.) Waigo can run hot & cold but he's much more effective than BWP (who was just thick!) & Waigo has a great temperament & attitude. A far cry from BWP. To compare him to BWP is an insult.

Having to wait until payday before I could afford tickets for tonights game the Missus and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Away from our usual seats in the Itchen and in the Kingsland Northam corner and being back in amongst a great atmosphere made tonights game all the more enjoyable despite the odd few momemts when we weren't doing so well on the pitch.

In addition to the Players tonight, thanks to everyone in the Kingsland Northam Corner too for helping make a good game great and keeping the lively atmosphere around us all going throughout the evening. :smt038=D>:partyman:

Moving our seats after tonight...

You know I was having a pee just before the game and heard the announcer say Hammond was playing - I just knew that we would win with him back. Thought the side looked good. Jaidi and Fonte just need a little more time to get used to each other and they will be an awesome CB pairing. Waigo, Antonio and Lallana put together some utterly sublime passes tonight that could grace the Prem - the problem is consistency at the moment. Anyway, fantastic game - great atmosphere. Cannot wait now until Saturday - I really feel we can get something from this game. COYR!!!! We're going to Wembley!!!!

Am I the only person who thought we were actually fantastic in the first half and then just a bit more conservative in the second?

You're right. First 40 minutes we were all over them, second half we just killed the game. Very professional.

Did they even have a chance in the 2nd half? We were never in danger, clearly AP told them to sit back and hold on to the lead we had as in the last 5 minutes of the first half they started to build some momentum. Clever management imo.

Shame that we didn't pile on the pressure and go for the jugular, but Pardew decided to sit back and it worked and we're going to Wembley! :D :D :D :D

'Changed the Stockport game' I think Gordon you could have run on on and did that. I stand by my belief that Papa and BWP are very similar players apart from the speed of the former and remember BWP didn't have the freedom to play at this level but in one of the hardest leagues in Europe, 5th I believe behind the big 4 leagues. Considering where Papa originates from you would have expected more a bit like the more we expected from BWP when we arrived from Man City.

I apologise for the insult but Bradley is a big boy and he will get over it.

We started really well, quick, incisive and in their faces - we deservedly went 2 goals up. Papa's movement and pace was pulling their back 4 all over the shop and that let Lambert get through to score...

the 2nd goal was fantastic, you won't ever see a better OG. Antonio over-ran it...keeper came to claim it, their player decided to also boot it and it rebounded off another of their defenders and into the net - who cares though!

I thought after that it could be any score, because we were rampant...but we got to about 35-40mins and just took our foot of the gas totally, kind of went into ''cruise'' mode - which we can’t do very well. They got a goal back, which was lucky from their point of view, but also pretty poor defending from us.

2nd half they huffed and puffed, but they never created anything clear cut and I’d say we were quite comfortable, without ever pushing that hard ourselves (it turned very scrappy). 3rd goal probably flattered us slightly on the night, but it's a deserved win taking in both ties - but let's not underestimate Carlisle...we're going into this as red hot favorites now, which brings it's own pressures…

ratings...

Kelv - 7 - didn't have to do much tbf, his distribution was a bit iffy at times though

Harding 7 - good to see him back, solid as you'd expect - but not as attacking as I’ve seen him in previous games.

Jaidi - 7 - good to see him back as well, won most in the air...but tried at times to play a bit too much on the dock and got into trouble, but he's still one of our best CB's

Fonte - 8 - untroubled, defends with ease - really like him, way too good for this level, clear to see.

Thomo - 7 - If there's one thing you can be sure about with Thomas, is that he'll get up the ref's nose most games. He was solid though - wasn't tested too much tbf.

Antonio - 6 - quite quiet in all honesty, he had a few runs at them and helped get the 2nd goal…but he wasn't as involved as he was for the first leg.

Morgan - 6 - iffy IMO - when the game turned scrappy he lost it a bit, started giving the ball away and losing tackles etc - good decision to sub him for wotton.

Hammond - 8 - fantastic surprise to see him back and he made a massive difference IMO. In their faces all game, didn't let their midfield settle and led as you'd expect him too. We've really missed him.

Lallana - 8 - another good game from adam...first 30-35mins he was everywhere, they couldn't contain him. Nice to see him finish it off with a goal too.

Lambert 8 - close to his best IMO - tired a bit towards the end, but they couldn't handle him in the first 30 mins, his clever forward play (along with papa) was creating openings time and time again. It was interesting to see him taking all the set pieces (corners etc) - he's got the ability to bend a fantastic ball, so we might as well utilize it from other situations.

Papa - 8 - thought he played really well, ran his socks off and he gives us a dimension which I think we've lacked in some games - someone to run beyond the last defender, it makes a huge difference.

Got to agree in general with those all bar Jaidi maybe should be a 6. I thought he looked a bit off the pace and IMO had his least impressive (that is no slight on him by the way, as he has been solid for us all season when selected) game in red and white, although he did add some strength and extra experience. Good result though and a great atmosphere to boot. Wembley here we come

I tend to agree with most of that. Main difference being Fonte who at times miss kicked the ball causing problems a few times. Jaidi was good in the air but showed his lack of match play. Hammond also showed the same but also why we had missed him so much.

The crowd even began singing Pardews Army over and over again.

This team was forced upon him by cuptied players but Alan please take note of the improved form shown by this team.

The atmosphere at times was superb. Tension grew in the second half as we failed to dominate as in the first but in the end we sang our hearts out.

The majority of the first half, our play was awesome, amongst the best that I had seen all season. When the team was announced, I was impressed that in my opinion we had fielded the best team we had available. In particular, it was good to see the return of Hammond, Harding, Jaidi and Thomas. With Fonte playing with the last three, it seemed a very solid defence, but Schneiderlin and Hammond in the middle of the park looked an effective partnership of the gritty midfielder with the cultured passer. Out on the flanks we had Lallana for his intelligent passing and high standard of general footballing ability, together with Antonio's pace and unpredictability which makes him hard to defend against. What was key though, was the partnering of Lambert with Papa Weigo. Lambert had been appearing a bit out of sorts recently, but Weigo energised and enthused him, as he is the sort of player in the box that can make things happen. I thought that he was pretty well unplayable last night and he must have had their defence bricking it numerous times. He has speed, a good footballing brain and good positional sense. Papa was my man of the match and Pardew ought to take it further with him in the absence of Connolly. If Lambert needs a rest, I feel sure that Papa could work well with Barnard or Connolly too.

So for the majority of the first half, we played like a team possessed, in their faces, chasing lost causes and winning all the 50/50 balls through sheer guts and determination. Unfortunately, after we had gone two up and the Northam started chanting that we were going to Wembley, the team seemed to think that it was job done and took their foot off the accelerator and sat back, inviting MKDs on to us. It was almost inevitable that the pressure they exerted would produce a goal and for the start of the second half, we were very nervy. It took a third goal to settle our nerves, but why is it that we can't sustain the pressure for the full 90 minutes? I'm in the camp of opinion that says that we need a midfield general to keep up the concentration and effort, but I can't think of any at this level who we could sign.

I think that Pardew got this about right tactically. The substitutions were also good and well timed. Schneiderlin blows a bit hot and cold and his influence was fading. Wotton was needed to shore us up and put a bit of bite into the centre when things were getting a bit niggly. The same for Thomas, who had done well enough, but was in danger of a sending off when responding to provocation.

In the end, it was comfortable enough, but I think that it could have been a different game had Easter played and if we hadn't taken Puncheon from them.

The fans were generally awesome last night and must have given the team a real boost. How nice to see a nearly full stadium. It's a pity though that blocks 43 and 44 were full of people who probably don't go often and don't sing, otherwise we could have had our Kop end.

Happy with the win and a day out at Wembley but lets put some perspective on last nights game.

1, what the hell is our main striker doing taking corners there must be someone else who could have done the job.

2, Thomas must have had a brain storm, just got booked for a shove in the chest then 5 mins later ran the width of the pitch got involved and did the same thing, I thought here we go 2nd yellow followed by a red.

We played some nice stuff in places during the first half but we let MK Dons boss the second half for long periods by not getting the ball on the deck, we played hoof ball. Don't get me wrong I am very happy with the win but worry about Saturday if we play like we have been of late.

I think you must have been watching another player. He caused all sorts of problems to their defence. They just could not handle him

Dear Me !

I would have to say that your assessment might make you 2 shin pads short of a football kit !

Waigo's all around pace and movement coupled with a football brain is completely at odds with young Wright-Phillips and was quite apparant last night during the match!

Congratualtions. I was chuffed to see Saints reach the final. For what it's worth, myself and a friend went to the JPT Final (Bristol Rovers V Doncaster) a few years back, and despite it being a "lesser cup", the day didn't reflect that. I really do hope for all Saints fans that you go on and win it. Best of luck. Tony

James was on the bench? Nuff said :)

PS (OK not nuff said) I think Rickie had a couple of good corner kicks that ended up far post for a header back into the penalty box - A lot better than our previous attempts at corners from Lallana and James tbh.
