Crab Lungs Posted 9 February, 2010 Share Posted 9 February, 2010 Another 'war' series from HBO, documenting the 1st Recon Batt. USMC from Kuwait right through the first 40 days of the 2003 invasion in Iraq. Thoroughly absorbing viewing and whilst the americans might get up some people's noses, you can almost imagine similar characters being involved in any of the Allied forces. For me, not only was it a well made and interesting series, it was also very, very funny. The characters in it are great and well defined and give you plenty of chuckles along the way, despite the perilous situations they find themselves in..... and Sgt. Josh Ray Person.... LMAO Recommended.
Scummer Posted 9 February, 2010 Share Posted 9 February, 2010 I just finished watching it a few days ago. It was very good. Didn't realise until I was reading the paper yesterday that Brad is played by the same person who plays Eric in True Blood.
manji Posted 9 February, 2010 Share Posted 9 February, 2010 Excellent series and a great book. All episodes based on fact. The guy was an embedded reporter from Rolling Stone. Watched it first time round and the re-watched when it was repeated even better the second time round.
jeff leopard Posted 9 February, 2010 Share Posted 9 February, 2010 It makes The Hurt Locker look very ordinary, and laughably clichéd.
Baj Posted 9 February, 2010 Share Posted 9 February, 2010 Watched this back in 2008 when a mate in the states recommended it, great viewing. Worth watching the whole series again if you get a chance, was on FX middle of last year too.
manji Posted 9 February, 2010 Share Posted 9 February, 2010 Theres a lot of good documentries around as well at the mo. Just finished watching "The War" by Ken Burns who made a superb series on the American Civil War a few years ago. The War is yet another series on WW11 but made from a very American perspective ,has some amazing archive film and awesome recollections from American participants both on the front line and at home.It is not afraid to criticize as well which is unusual for a US series. Also been watching "Shooting The War" on BBC4. Again WW11 but is a compilation of home movies from Germany and the UK from the Home Front and the Frontline. Nearly all of it previously unseen. Seany S Posted 9 February, 2010 Share Posted 9 February, 2010 How spooky, I started watching this last night. Have had it on DVD for ages but not gotten around to it. I had run out of Sopranos to watch until a work colleague re-ups me with season 3, so decided to take the plunge. Very well observed and acted, I thoroughly enjoyed the opening episode. Was good to see some old HBO regulars in it, like James "Ziggy" Ransome and Tobias Beecher from Oz, even spotted that creepy serial killer bloke out of The Shield in it. Really captures what is going on over in the Middle East, had to laugh at the Pizza Hut delivery and the R.Lee Ermey-esque drill sarge character. Only caught the opening episode last night, will be dipping back into it tomorrow due to the little matter of the Saints match tonight.
Crab Lungs Posted 9 February, 2010 Author Share Posted 9 February, 2010 Weird, I only 'by chance' stumbled across the series and didn't start watching until last night either - it was so good, I watched them through in their entirety! Just wish there was another series...! Gonna look into a few other recommendations on here as well.... cheers guys
