Coal

If you require a steam engine to operate efficeiently, it is important to keep the firebox back corners plentifully supplied with good coal. This then provides a reservoir of heat, a deposit account if you will. Fine control can then be undertaken by flicking small amounts to the front and middle, thus providing the correct amount of steam at any given time.

Black smoke at the chimney is a sign of incomplete combustion and is considered poor form!
