Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 8 February, 2010 Share Posted 8 February, 2010 http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article7017951.ece only a matter of time I guess People thought JFK was weak with Khrushchev over Cuba...so if Obama is 'JFK' weak with China I think we'll all be O.K. Plus let be honest, I think that China has too much of a vested interest in western capitalism to start a 'real' cold war. They have to be the only example of a 'capitalist communist' state... Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 8 February, 2010 Share Posted 8 February, 2010 (edited) what..they bought so much of our debt and have us on a set of strings so to speak didnt we trade with the USSR whilst spying on them..? Your first point: Exactly, they're going to want this money paid back arn't they? I'm not necessarily talking about trade, I mean, that if you look at modern China (i.e. Beijing etc not rural areas) I bet you wouldn't have to look too far for an iPhone, a Microsoft powered computer etc. Edited 8 February, 2010 by Thorpe-le-Saint I didn't want uber poster Bungle commentating on my poor grammar. NorthamSteve Posted 8 February, 2010 Share Posted 8 February, 2010 This is not good. Russian subs were in and out of Southampton water like nobodies buisness in the 80's. I don't want to live thinking that that is possible again.

NorthamSteve Posted 10 February, 2010 Share Posted 10 February, 2010 It is possible. Maybe not as necky as getting into Southampton water but not far off Slightly off topic (and a bit of a co-incidence) but check this out.... http://www.southampton.ac.uk/cartography/sovietmaps/index.shtml I was chatting to Alex - the Head of the Carto Unit today. He said that at first they couldn't understand how they got all the depth data. Obviously, they came to the conclusion that it must've been subs travelling in and out. Anyway, other interesting points of note. Bittern Police Station, Spitfire Quay and less suprisingly, Vospers were amoung the primary targets. Depth data could have been drawn from various sources...the maximun draught of ships going in and out and the safety margin used for keel to sea bed....the satelites maybe..? or even good old spying from an agent... I wonder if a Ruskie sub ever did have the nerve to venture up (or close) to southampton water...as dont forget, they would have had to have gone close to pompey...which then had a shed load of warships that MAY have picked them up.. also, it would have been so bloody dangerous in such relatively shallow water for a sub..but..would have been ballsy to do it DIVED..... what is interesting...is how China is starting (or it seems) to want to flex its muscles and Russia is now resurgent in naval terms.. well..one thing we know is that the world in unredictable

One that I found chiiling was a account of a guy sat on Yarmouth sea-front. He said that he say 2 British war-ships pass heading for Southampton, then a Sub surfaced apparently close enough to see the Hammer and sickle. The war-ships then returned to escort it out. That said, on reflection it would take balls to come into Southampton submerged....
Thedelldays Posted 10 February, 2010 Author Share Posted 10 February, 2010 That said, on reflection it would take balls to come into Southampton submerged.... back then...I guess, the rules were very different... lots of bosses at work tell lots of stories about Cold War patrols...some of which are just simply not-believable...but they did happen
