derry Posted 6 February, 2010 Posted 6 February, 2010 I'd like to know how you could get more attacking than; ----James-Puncheon-Morgan Waigo---------------------Lallana ------------Lambert ? Most people have been saying that we needed Wotton in the midfield today. How would that make us more attacking, exactly? --------Schneiderlin---Lallana or Barnard Antonio---Waigo---Lambert----Puncheon Wotton isn't the answer to any question.
Block 5 Posted 6 February, 2010 Posted 6 February, 2010 Wotton isn't the answer to any question. Who is our worst passer?
Saint_clark Posted 6 February, 2010 Posted 6 February, 2010 Who is our worst passer? Even that goes to Lancashire tbf.
Genk Posted 6 February, 2010 Posted 6 February, 2010 I can see why some of you (Glasgow Saint etc) are frustrated due to us spending the money and not producing results. Teams need time to build, especially with these new signings coming in, they need to blend with the rest of the team, learning how each other play. This will improve gradually and doesn't happen quickly. I am confident over the remainder of the season, our performances will return to how they were when we went on that run. The answer is not to get rid of Pardew, he may go 'defensive' at time but he is a bloody good football manager. We all go to the games now expecting to win the game which shows how we have come on since we played Swindon away when we were nothing short of shocking. Things are gradually getting better with a squad being built here. The reason we aren't getting the results? For me it's down to one key thing. We have stopped playing our football! When we went on the run Oct/Nov time, we were passing it around looking fantastic but suddenly everything has changed to 'lump' it to Rickie. I have no idea why. Team's catched onto it and simply put a couple of defenders on him. Play it to his feet and we will create much more. Who know's what happened to our passing game??
BadgerBadger Posted 6 February, 2010 Posted 6 February, 2010 Er, do you think that halfway through designing Apollo 11, JFK came in and said "hardly the moon is it" as they sat in the design studios at Lockheed Martin... There's a difference between patience and satisfaction you muppet. I liked that
SaintBobby Posted 7 February, 2010 Posted 7 February, 2010 We had a truly dire start to the season. Combine that with the ten point penalty and play-offs were always going to be difficult. We didnt win any of our first seven league games, if I recall. Since then, we've W 11 D 6 L 4 (39 points from 21 games). That's pretty much league winning form. No doubt we've hit a rocky patch in last few games. But no reason to panic. Talk of ditching AP is total madness.
Toadhall Saint Posted 7 February, 2010 Posted 7 February, 2010 Anyone committed suicide yet?! **** me we drew away from home 1 all.

OldNick Posted 7 February, 2010 Posted 7 February, 2010 --------Schneiderlin---Lallana or Barnard Antonio---Waigo---Lambert----Puncheon Wotton isn't the answer to any question. and then you'd criticise because we won 3-1 .......Remember when we were winning every game by that score? All those posts complaining (not you on that point)about us letting in goals and of course Davis's inability to be a keeper. I think we should give AP time and if this time next season we are not in position to make the CCC then start questioning the manager.I doubt any team we put out if we were manager would play perfectly each game. The players are human and their minds are not on Exeter game. I suspect most of the fans did not have that game as a priority this week. Wrong i know but human nature.

That point is one that some of us may not have taken into account. However that doesn't explain the different way we have played during the cup games recently against the sometimes poor way we have played in the league. In the cup we have at times overpowered the opposition where as we seem to have no fire or fight in league games.
dronskisaint Posted 7 February, 2010 Posted 7 February, 2010 Everyone's a hard man behind the PC! Sad Said the man behind the PC? Seriously (& I'm only half way through this thread & too bored & irritated to read the rest) Look where we have come from...in the summer we very nearly didn't have a club at all - at the start of the season we were on minus ten & without someone taking hold & turning the mentality of accepting failure top win around we were facing relegation once more. The new regime have come in & appointed someone with a proven record of getting teams out of lower divisions, have given him money to spend, time to rebuild & an ambitious but achievable target that took in to account the starting point given the recent history & what he had to work with. We now stand mid-table...not too big a threat of relegation & an increasingly outside chance of the play-offs (that has always been a long shot but the hope is still there). We are 90 minutes away from Wembley (you can only play in the competitions that you are allowed to enter), in the fifth round of the FA Cup (as a third tier team) but more than this..... We have a team, a team that I am watching with a smile on my face -a team that I look forward to watching whenever I can, a team that has it's ups & downs like most others but is going in the right direction both in footballing terms & upwardly from the start of the season. At the moment & for the forseeable future I think we have the right people both in ownership & management of the club. We have the right quality of players to be blended in to a formidable L1 & Championship contender. To me - this is fantastic progress from where we started - to bleat the negatives is to lack understanding of where we were & how football works. In Markus Liebherr we have been unbelievably fortunate - but so has he! The combination will see us back in the top flight within the timescale he has laid out. Please - to the detractors - take a long hard look...try doing it with the perspective of where we might have been as well as where we are going to be...this means viewing the 'now' as well-advanced work in progress!

In the cup we have at times overpowered the opposition where as we seem to have no fire or fight in league games.Perhaps with all the talk , the players realised deep down that the play offs were going to be difficult and the way to get to Wembley was through the JPT. I know that is a low target but as a fan i want ot go to Wembley that is quite possible wheras making the play off finals is/was always going to be tough. The JPT is a distraction, but if we get to Wembley the city will feel good and whilst it is only a tin pot trophy the ZDS all those years ago was a great fun day

As am I. But ML has put serious money into the manager and team, and the question is really does he think they can deliver ? Sooner or later, they need to start showing progress, and we are going backwards at the moment.

dronskisaint Posted 7 February, 2010 Posted 7 February, 2010 Sorry, the honeymoon period of gratitude is over - there is hard work to be done, and NC and ML would be the first to say it. Is that an apology for lacking understanding of how long it takes to rebuild from where we were or an apology for purporting to speak for people that you have, in all probability, never spoken to? If what you say is true why would NC & ML have stated publicly that the plan was a three year one - with a further two year option in Pardew's case? I deal in reality & what has been proven to be said - I'm absolutely, without question certain that ML & NC would have been the first to say right from the outset that there is a huge amount of hard work to be done...not rocket science is it? Hopefully their take on reality is more measured & less governed by personal agendas.

No, we just dont think the situation from the summer entitles the manager and team to a free lunch for the rest of the season. Come on, what progress are we showing in the way we play ? I keep hearing we are a hoofball team, despite spending millions. And our central midfield is gutless.

Thedelldays Posted 7 February, 2010 Posted 7 February, 2010 the crux of the matter will be if we even look like playoff contenders at the end of the season..if not, then pardew may well have had his last job for a long time.. have we at any point been within 10 points of the playoffs this season after the 1st game..?

I remeber you posing a similar toughie for the Happy-Clappies during the play off season. "Have we been in the top 2 at any time this season ?" Cut right to the nub of things, these questions...

dronskisaint Posted 7 February, 2010 Posted 7 February, 2010 What is my personal agenda ? You have made this personal, I note. Once again I can only judge by what has been written on this as well as multiple other threads. On the basis of this I would suggest that you have a problem with Alan Pardew as manager - that would be the personal agenda that I meant. Am I mistaken then...if so I apologise but perhaps you could look back at your postings & try to understand how I could have arrived at that conclusion? On the more general point of where we are currently I argue the case with you & various others as to what is a realistic expectation in February 2010 with the club having been purchased by the current owners in July 2009.

madruss Posted 7 February, 2010 Posted 7 February, 2010 i THINK the answer is no....which really, is very average no matter what side of the arguement you have... like I said, im THINK the answer is no.. In December I definitely remember we were less than 10 points off 5th at one point. In fact the league table on 31 December has us in 6th without the 10 point deduction. http://stats.football365.com/dom/ENG/D2/todec.html There's 18 games to go. 10 of those are at home, and one thing we can all agree on is that (even recently) our home form has been superb (100% in January and December!) If we continue winning at home and drawing away we'll end up on 72 points, might not be enough. But if our form improves above what it currently is (which is not an impossibility), then we might even creep up to the 76-78 point mark. Until that's impossible, I for one won't give up
Pilchards Posted 7 February, 2010 Posted 7 February, 2010 Reading the guardian article this morning tells me that Pardew is under pressure to deliver now because NC and ML are not in this for fun. Come on Pardew no more excuses about another draw and get '****ing' stuck in for 3 points.

Come on Pardew no more excuses about another draw and get '****ing' stuck in for 3 points. Yesterdays result was excusable - I didnt realise that the pitch "was in poor condition". Poor AP couldnt play his flowing football - and it was impossible to adapt at such short notice. If only someone had thought to look at the condition of the Exeter pitch....darn it.
Dazza82 Posted 7 February, 2010 Posted 7 February, 2010 Noooooo, but we need to spend some time evaluating if we can really move forward under AP, I think. I genuinely think he is the wrong managerial type for our situation. Who is the right managerial type for our situation in your opinion then?

Come on Pardew no more excuses about another draw and get '****ing' stuck in for 3 points. The really good thing is it seems both of them have expectations of us playing good football which is what I want. Pardew says he is going to continue with the pragmatism. I don't think that will be enough to either satisfy the owner or win the league scratching out draws and wins. Teams that play this way in the end get relegated PDQ from the Premier.
Clifford Nelson Posted 7 February, 2010 Posted 7 February, 2010 If the team was actually playing entertaining football it would be easier to look at possibly replacing various players with better ones. In the current pragmatic emphasise on clearances; heading the ball forward at every opportunity; and aiming for Ricky's head, it is very difficult to see what better players would achieve, because this is not the result of a poor playing staff, they have already proved that they can do better. There is nothing wrong with working hard, but it must be for a purpose. At the moment the purpose is lost, and so is the entertainment. No amount of time given to a manager without purpose to his actions will not be of much use.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 7 February, 2010 Author Posted 7 February, 2010 Pardew says. "They [the board] want it quick. They're putting a lot of pressure on me and I'm putting it on the players in the best way I can, without making them taut and tight. I'm the one who is taut and tight! Quote 2: Alan Pardew's own future beyond the summer still shrouded in doubt. 5 year plan or not - NC and ML want results fast and rightly so.
