hamster Posted 7 February, 2010 Share Posted 7 February, 2010 I almost searched for this Dog, then I realised that you were being unchracteristically clever. Mount Everest was still the highest mountain before it was 'discovered'. It was always there wasn't it

Marsdinho Posted 7 February, 2010 Share Posted 7 February, 2010 But where is the point on the Earth's surface that is farthest from the centre of the planet ? There may be higher mountains than everest under water, but I would say that the peak of everest is still the furthest point away from earth's core. Marsdinho Posted 7 February, 2010 Share Posted 7 February, 2010 OK, I had to cheat and look it up..... "The summit of Mount Everest reaches a higher elevation above sea level, but the summit of Chimborazo is widely reported to be the farthest point from Earth's center despite a possible challenge from Huascarán. Chimborazo is one degree south of the equator and the earth's diameter at the equator is greater than at the latitude of Everest, nearly 28° north, with sea level also elevated. Despite being 2,581 m (8,568 ft) lower in elevation above sea level, it is 6,384.4 km (3,968 mi) from the Earth's center, 2.1 km farther than the summit of Everest."
