Redondo Saint Posted 4 February, 2010 Share Posted 4 February, 2010 Taking Mrs Redondo to UK in July and want to go to Euro land for a few days. Croatia sounds good and we can fly from Soton, but I also like the Greek islands and it's been a long time since last there. I haven't been to Croatia. Any suggestions? explorer saint Posted 4 February, 2010 Share Posted 4 February, 2010 Redondo I used to work for a greek tour operator, whats Mrs Redondo after I mean if its a bit of peace and quiet but also some lovely restaurants etc which will gain you much brownie points then try Santorini its fab, and a bit more exclusive than some other islands. If you stay at Oia (pronounced 'ear') it can be a little more expensive if you want to in some of the hotels and villas on the cliff side mainly due to the great sunsets and views. You also can get a few cruise ships visiting but only during the day not the evening, I went for a day trip there from elsewhere on the islands but loved it so much went back for a bit of a longer trip with Mrs Explorer. This is my fav place in greece, but you won't be able to fly from Soton it would need to be Gatwick. Otherwise Kefalonia is really good and retains a lot of the authentic greek charm, if its more of the nightlife you're after with loads of ****ed up Brits then take your pick from any of the main islands Corfu, Crete, Rhodes etc. Other good spots are Thassos, Paxos ( full of italians) and Parga on the mainland. Croatia no idea mate, would think good value for money though. Good luck

PhilB Posted 4 February, 2010 Share Posted 4 February, 2010 Lovran on the Istrian Peninsula in Croatia is within easy striking distance of Pula and the roman colosseum and Porec where you can catch the hydrofoil to Venice for the day. But best of all is the Plitvice Lakes...awesome!

Dog Posted 4 February, 2010 Share Posted 4 February, 2010 Paros in Greece is a good island, great beaches, loads of bars and restaurants, not many drunks. However try Croatia, I went to Poreç back in 1998 just after their war ended and had a great time. The food, drink and women are out of this world. The beaches are rubbish being only rock and large shingle. Hotels were mostly 3 star although boasted 5 star. Landscape and weather was brilliant and they have great swimming areas that are very safe. Bullet holes and rocket damage everywhere but over Greece I would go back again as things have moved on since when I went. Rented a motorboat out for 12 hours and ended up 30 miles away, got lost, hit a storm, had rescue boats out looking for us and presumed us dead as when we arrived back one bloke fainted and it cost me my freedom for a few years. Croatia all the way for me although I will never go back again.

Greece is my preference but I also like the idea of flying from Soton and not dealing with Gatwick. I am over this weekend and will pick up some brochures. bridge too far Posted 5 February, 2010 Share Posted 5 February, 2010 Why not try mainland Greece? Someone's already mentioned Parga which is great and there are lots of really interesting places in the Pelopponese (sp?). If you like seeing ancient monuments, that is - Corinth, Mycenae, Epidavros and of course Athens itself.
