First in 96, missed the league game in nov 04, as I was getting married in Thailand, I did however see it on Tv in Bangkok.

Gigersaint Posted 4 February, 2010 Share Posted 4 February, 2010 This will be my 5th, my first experince of the derby game was the 5-1 away win at Fratton Park for the Alan Knight Testimonial, followed by the '96 cup win on my birthday , and then the League cup and Premiership wins in the '03 season. In each of the games I've been to I have not seen us lose against them yet and I hope that continues on the 13th Feb too. The Missus is looking forward to this one too as it will be her first experience of a derby match.
THINWHITEDUKE Posted 4 February, 2010 Share Posted 4 February, 2010 Baptism of fire ! John Milkins testimonial, think we won 8-2 down there, not sure of the score as I was too busy having the laces removed from my boots by the OB. Don't think anybody ran that day!! david in sweden Posted 4 February, 2010 Share Posted 4 February, 2010 (edited) Those stats ignored the early 20th century games when both sides were in the Southern League. The first meeting at that level was 1898-99 season when the " other side " were known as Royal Artillery Portsmiff - they finished bottom in their first year. The two clubs were remarkably well-matched and often finished near each other in the table, whether high or low, although Saints had 5 championship wins to Pompey's 1. The meetings were also pretty equal upto WW1 with both sides winning 14 league games and 6 draws. Portsmouth won promotion in 1919-20 and Saints the following year. After that, as yr. stats show, they met very rarely which is somewhat ironic for two cities so close geographically. As some have commented the " hated rivalry " only really began along with the hooliganism in the 1960's but my (late) father sometimes used to visit FP in the post WW2 period, when his beloved Saints team were playing away. david in sweden Posted 4 February, 2010 Share Posted 4 February, 2010 Was looking at statistics and in all competitions we have played them 35 times, not counting Knights testimonial. Saturday will be my 15th derby game, lets hope for a repeat of the 95/96 result. Just wondered if any of the more mature fans on here remember games of the 60's and what the rivalry was like then. I can remember my uncles going to watch Pompey play in the early 60's when Saints werent playing or were away just to watch football and the rivalry wasnt that intense it seemed quite normal then to go to FP. One of the best / nicest wins was the 5-2 win at FP in our promotion season 1965-66, when our Reserve CF Norman Dean ...scored a hat-trick. Norman remains the only Saints' player ever to score a hat-trick in a derby game at FP. It was the high point of his career....as Ted Bates (rightly) thought Norman didn't quite have " the quality " for the Division One level. Instead, Ted went out and paid a club record fee for (then) a little-known Welsh CF from Norwich named ..RON DAVIES ! (thank the Lord, he did). macthesaint Posted 4 February, 2010 Share Posted 4 February, 2010 will be my 13th plus four friendlys.Anyone remember a Hampshire cup match on a freezing cold night in december in about 81?The crowd was about 6000 with about 100 of us down there and Danny Wallace got untold racists stick.Theyve always been ******s. I went to that,I think we lost 2-1 and I was in a home end. I remember some joker kept saying "Holmes and Watson..elimentary ha ha." Went and cheered Danny there in an England U21 match. He gave me and my mates a thumbs up which incurred the wrath of the local mongs! I've been to 8 but can't make this one.

That was my first away game....sat in amongst the unwashed well you could in those days. Norman was working as a steward in the Staplewood car park a couple of years ago but havent seen him recently. MadDogMatt Posted 4 February, 2010 Share Posted 4 February, 2010 thanks LadySaint and 70's Mike for bringing back the memories goog and bad. Me I have been to the last 10 home and away. The 1-0 win at FP in the FAC in 84 was fantastic but - and you younger fans take note - for me the real rivalry started at this one - my mates sister got kicked in the back by a SB in her spot in the lower tier of the stand next to the main massed ranks of the Saints fans on the end terrace. Next visit to FP the guy next to me when we were kept in after the game got hit by a half brick on the head thrown from outside the ground. Worst the heavy defeat at FP under HR. Best - the games at SMS where our support has been fantastic. Clear out your you lug holes for this one but b4 that ... COYR at Exeter and against the MKD. Hey do me a favour too - dont f88king sing "pay up p**pey" during the skates game On TV that is is going to come across and worse to their jouirneyman players at PUP!!
