Gingeletiss Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 Seeing where David Prutton now finds himself, has led me to think about players who thought they were better off moving from Saints. Steve Williams came to mind straight away, a great great player, but dissappeared from the scene within a couple of years, having moved to the mighty Arse nal...... So who do you recall???
JustinR Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 More often than not they move and their career goes backwards... take note players, you'll be cursed if you leave us!!
eesti matty Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 Kevin Davies when he first left. James Beattie.
Toadhall Saint Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 Was going to say Cranie - but looking at the above its all about good players going backwards.
Sinned Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 Ken Monkou. Turned down a contract, and then played for Huddersfield on a short term contract & then disappeared
paulwantsapint Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 So often we sale after 1 good season like BALE
itchen_dan Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 Dare I say Walcott?? I mean he hasnt really set the world on fire with Arsenal has he...
Toomer Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 Danny Wallace going to Man.Utd. To be honest it was ill health in this case.
Crab Lungs Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 James Beattie, to an extent. Though given the chance and playing in the right teams, he always banged them in.
saint_stevo Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 Prutton is above us in the league and has a chance at promotion.....the grass is greener
Pancake Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 The capitalisation of the "g" in the title concerns me.
Lets B Avenue Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 What did Alan Shearer gain by leaving us?
Scudamore Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 I'm not sure Prutton fits into this category. He hardly left for the bright lights and big city. He was ushered out of the door to Nottingham Forest who were a division below us at the time. Anyway...carry on...
John B Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 Some do Bridge Shearer Jones Davies Best Some dont Beattie Baird Some may do Surman McGoldrick Bale Walcott Dyer Crainie Mills Blackstock Not many SFC have signed have been that good either SKacel Euell BWP Saga for instance
SaintDonkey Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 [edit]really should read the initial post[/edit]
Thedelldays Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 shearer....kevin davies...tim flowers...Jeff Kenna....Kenwyne Jones....chris baird....wayne bridge...theo walcott
Sheff Saint Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 I don't think there are many players at all we have 'discarded' and then they've gone on to be successful. Kevin Davies is the most recent. To a much lesser extent Leon Best (though didn't we try and keep him) The likes of Walcott and Flowers were prised away from our grasp!

Clifford Nelson Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 The amount of players who seems to have gone backwards after leaving us is endless, although there are, of course, two kinds: Those who thought that they were a big fish in a tiny provincial club, and then found that their appraisal of themselves was grossly exaggerated, and those who needed to find their own level, and then played for several years happily for Swansea, for example. It's much harder to think of those who left and made a great success of it.

CB Saint Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 Glen Hoddle (alright he was a manager but didn't do so well at spurs)
Clifford Nelson Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 what is a provincial club..? Good question. I was merely trying to capture what they might have been thinking. Something which extists in the provinces, meaning anything outside London, really, or maybe we should include Manchester and Liverpool...Do I give a...Not really. Small club I suppose it means, but outside the top five how small are we?

I have often wondered what people mean by a small provincial club.. or just provincial...? sort of adds to the insignificance of something..? does that mean leyton orient or brentford are bigger than us..?
wightman35 Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 Don't forget the old days! Don Rogers to Arsenal, Alf Ramsey to Spuds or Ian Black to Fulham, to name a few! .
