The Shirt is Yours...

Richard Branson asked Peter Storey if he could put it to the Poopsmuff board about Virgin sponsoring them. One week later he got back to Branson and said no. Do you mind if I ask why not, said Branson. Storey replied, how can we have Virgin on pur shirts when we get *****ed every week.

It's a nice idea to commemorate 125 years although I'd have been equally happy with sponsorship of a charity like Villa does.

Saints may sell more shirts to offset the loss of sponsorship.

I note in the historical shirts link above that Pompey started out in a nice shade of salmon pink.

Don't forget Barcelona and their UNICEF shirts - costs them (Barca) £1m a season I believe.

Pompey's original nickname was The Shrimpers, although I'm not sure which came first, pink shirt or sh*t nickname.

Back to the original thread, overall, a great idea. I have never been happy acting as an unpaid billboard, and have only ever bought 2 replica shirts with adverts on. Will definitely buy this one.

Separate question - I note that the actual quote is:

Southampton Football Club is delighted to announce that next season's home replica shirt will be without a headline sponsor.[/Quote]

Does this mean that just the shirt WE can buy will be sponsor-free, or will the team also be wearing a sponsor-free shirt, a la Barca. Be great if it was the latter.

As an afterthought - with all the various preferences about which historical strip they should resurrect, why not have a vote on the website as to which one they should use? Just as long as they find a way to stop P*mpey fans hijacking the vote - require login with membership number etc.

By 'Headline' sponsor does that mean the back of the shirt is still on offer?

My Girlfriend while watching the Wolves game on Sky couple of seasons ago:

"Is that team all brothers?"

"Which team?"

"The team your playing..."

"No, why?"

"Well they're all called Chaucer..."

FFS!

Nice idea. Well done, happy to buy one when next back.

The cynic in me will then open a sweepstake to see who is the first to say...

"Clearly the recession is hitting football hard as Southampton struggle to find headline shirt sponsor for next season."

Or

"Clever way of covering up another snafu in the commercial department"

:-)

How about Flybe were asked to pay more next season but the two parties could not come to an agreement...?

Keep in mind Flybe like the rest of aviation, is not having the greatest of times.

If you read the on-line Echo their spin was a big loss to SFC as opposed to a commercial decision by Flybe to cut their advertising budget. - but then again I think The Echo currently have a vendetta against SFC!!!

Agreed & it will be nice to have a real shirt and not one of the ill fitting retro's for a change.

great move by the club but I hope they keep the red and white stripes.

Whatever happened to Gecko? Didn't he used to have something to do with shirt designs. May be wrong here...

Am still here. On here pretty much everyday

Perhaps he got bought out?

I think you will find gecko has emigrated to Oz.

Yes I've shifted off to Oz (Gold Coast to be exact) but am still very passionate about my Saints.

If there is a thread about kit - I must get involved :-)

For me if we're celebrating 125 years it has to be the original shirt from 1885, as much as I love the Keegan Patrick kit.

So here are my first efforts:

Thought we could have the sash but incorporate some stripes. Cheers

It's garbage, I heard more than a month ago that Cortese wanted rid of flybe. We were never going to renew, and they don't fit the profile of companies we want to do business with any more.

I quite like three, as I find the right hand end of the stripes annoying aesthetically. I also think that as the shirts are being brought out to celebrate the 125th Anniversary, some sort of mention should be made on the shirt of that fact. The addition of the words since 1885 on the sash in white between the stripes and the club logo would achieve that

I find number 1 a little too "Peruvian" for my taste, but quite like 2 and 3.

I agree with Wes that a reference to the clubs 125th anniversary would be a good addition.

How about one of these 3 on the front, with stripes or 80's on the back?

Yuk, overegging it or what?

that sounds like a cheap sweaty from Matalan or some of the overdone since 1885 'casual' wear from the megastore

1885-2010 under the badge will suffice
