The Shirt is Yours...

Sorry guys, if you take that article at face value then I think you're being a bit naive.

Essentially, what we have here is a difference of opinions between us and the business world with reagrds to what the club is worth as a sponsorship proposition.

Cortese and co will quite rightly state our case as un upwardly mobile team with great potential, whereas the potential sponsors are going to be accusing him of overinflating the value of sponsoring Saints.

The upshot will be that there isn't a deal to be done that suits both parties and, on the balance of things, Cortese will have decided that if we're only being offered something in the region of, say for argument sake, £250k a year for sponsorship, then we may as well refuse it and try to make something positive out of it.

Mark my words, this club is a business and if somebody had offered a significant amount of money for sponsorship, we would have accepted it. As things stand, we're not interested in insignificant sums of money so we're going to make a fancy shirt. That's fine by me and I look forward to the novelty of it.

Being in D1 we are unlikely to attract a sponsor for big money to make a difference BUT any sponsor will demand a profile and expect it's "pound of flesh" As we are celebrating 125 years it makes sense for the club to keep anyone like that out of our celebrations for that year.

Let's hope Saints relaunch all their merchandise, not just the shirt, without a sponsor name in celebration. Net profit may well exceed what gain the club would get from sponsorship.

The club will make more than £250,000 on the extra shirt sales this will generate, but they are going to have to make it 'special'. A mention of 125 years be it in a 'ONE OFF' redesigned badge would help. But I would imagine they will be looking for sponsorship the following season.

Surely it is only the REPLICA shirt that wont have sponsorship?!?!?! Otherwise they wouldnt have mentioned REPLICA shirt specifically?!!?

or am i missing something.

My hunch is that there will still be advertising of some kind on the teams home/away shirts but as a gift to the fans the 'replica' shirt wont.

Aston Villa, Barcelona and Saints, that's class.

Thanks ML and NC, you've restored pride in our great club.

Didnt West Brom play last season in the Prem without a sponsor? Or at least for a big chunk of the season anyway. This was due to them not being able to find anyone who valued the deal as much as them.

Either way, I look at this as a positive, well done on coming out early and saying this is what is going to happen. I am sure in the next 6 months if MC had wanted to he could have found us someone willing to sponsor us. I suspect the team will wear a sponsored shirt just that the replica will not have it. The away no doubt will have a sponsor.

So the plan is find a new deal when we are back in the Championship the season after next!

Up there for thinking

Not only that, but the advertising space will be more valuable. It will have been blank for a year and no doubt it will get mentioned on Sky Sports and the like. "Who will get Saints Sponsorship next year"

Rather than everyone else being nieve, I think you're being a little cynical and looking at the business side of things in 2 dimensions... I have no doubt that Cortese is running a business here and he wouldn't be doing this if it didn't make business sense. But I think to say that he currently can't find anybody is ridiculous. First off, its the 2nd of February. He has months before a new sponsorship deal would have to be announced, even if the Flybe deal not being renewed was in the public domain.

While there is a large aspect of this that is a nod to the fans, he's also going to take into account the extra shirt revenue this will generate and how this compares to a single year of sponsorship money, which we can take as circa £250,000 IF we get promoted this year.

On top of that, as I said above, he has the oppertunity to promote this advertising space. We will be the only club without a sponsor in any league next season, and no matter what league we're in we will be getting a lot of media attention. Either as a League 1 club with a big possibility of promotion, or as a championship club who have spent a lot of money and are going in all guns blazing. During all that media coverage the lack of a sponsor is going to be brought up on countless occasions, especially in relation to all the money we'll spend on the team.. "Southampton are buying all around them, they're rich now, they don't even need a sponsor anymore". This will all play into the club's hands when it comes around to signing up a sponsor for the following season. It will make the space more attractive and probable more expensive... to the extent that the club will probably make back the money it loses out on next season in the price it recieves the following season.

It all makes it very attractive to Cortese to make this gesture to the fans. He's thinking long term. He's making a gesture and working on a business theory that will not only mean he won't lose out on money from not having a sponsor, but in 2 years time he'll probably have made more money for the club than if he had taken a sponsor on board.

Their sponsor went bust I think.

Their sponsor was T-Mobile. It was just a case of they wanted too much money to be their sponsor in the premiership so didn't get one. They now have "one off" sponsors which tie in with their live games on tv.

I don't think anything you said contradicts with what I said!

My point was exactly that; Cortese has weighed up the offers or lack of for headline sponsorship and decided to pursue other means of making a lack of headline sponsorship commercially viable. That's not to say it won't be positive or interesting, but merely that the situation hasn't been brought about by Cortese knocking back a muli-million pound deal with a major company. Rather, he's decided he doesn't want to flog our shirt rights for a 'paltry' six figure sum to some poxy local business for fear of cheapening the brand etc.

"I don't want to reveal anything about the shirt at this point, but it is definitely a shirt that I am 100% convinced the fans will like."

Oh how little he knows..... Nicola, meet Alpine, Alpine meet Nicola.

....and now meet Glasgow Saint whose first question will be:

"How much does it cost?"

No so. We have parted company with Flybe so who* else would be willing to do away shirts only. As others have opined this is a business decision first and foremost. To go it alone is a very brave decision but I hope we are not just building debts against future income as we did in the past. Even we do not have a bottomless pit of money and comparisons with Aston Villa and Barca are superficial as they are backed by considerably more funds than we have at our disposal and substantially more income including the near certainty of gaining even more through European football.

Reading the article very closely, it does leave room for a shirt sponsor on home and away shirts, but not REPLICA shirts. I wonder if there will be a small scale deal with a local company just for shirts worn by players? It will be interesting to watch this one pan out.

Wonderful news. Gash sponsors can put me off buying a shirt. In fact it should be a requirement that further sponsorship should only be black and white going forward i'd suggest. Keep it subtle. They're lucky to be associated with us...not the other way round!

Regards the shirt itself i reckon something along the lines of the early 80s kit would be my preference.

But could also go for the original kit designed with some of that tasty Umbro Tailored by England fitted shirt sort of style. Looks less like a football shirt more like a nice polo that England shirt...and all the better it is for it. Would even consider wearing it outside of going to the game if they can get it right.

He'll also question why it was slow starting and feel it could have done so much better.

And also comment about how much nicer Norwich's kit is, and why couldn't we have one as good as that.

Perhaps something like this (based upon the Umbro England kit....)

be5ts1.jpg

That goes a little too far.

Yes, it is our first strip, but it bares little relation to our current identity.

Possibly a 'Quarters' strip or a simple Red and White stripes would be best for me, either way, no more stupid plastic panel! Result!

I think it'll just be a classic style collared shirt with red and white stripes. That's what is typically associated with the club down the years, and what the first "Southampton FC" team wore.

I wouldn't have minded the above as an away or 3rd shirt, but it certainly doesn't strike me as being traditional to our history. Although Arsenal's plum coloured home shirt was a step away from the usual and I liked the idea of that....

Mods, any chance of a poll to see what SW members would prefer? The options would seem to be:

a) standard red and white uniform sized stripes

b) Retro Rank Xerox/Keegan era

c) Retro of very first kit with diagonal stripe

d) Retro red and white quarters

I would go for b.

If you are celebrating 125 years then c) is the only option!

Wear a shirt in the style of that 125 years ago.

I think it is churlish for fans to say that not having a sponsor on is because we asked too much.

The club could still have a sponsor for 100k and still make a big fuss of the 125 thing and sell loads of commemorative shirts.

I like the idea of no sponsor on the shirt
