TijuanaTim Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Southampton/Southampton.htm Any of these would be fine with me. Without sponsors though. August '72 me up FFS!!
hypochondriac Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 I'll be buying one for the first time in a while.
Toadhall Saint Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 August '72 me up FFS!! 74 - 76 for me.
saintquin Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 Richard Branson asked Peter Storey if he could put it to the Poopsmuff board about Virgin sponsoring them. One week later he got back to Branson and said no. Do you mind if I ask why not, said Branson. Storey replied, how can we have Virgin on pur shirts when we get *****ed every week.
corsacar saint Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 ML and NC, are making correct decision after correct decision, boy supporting this club gets better every day.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 You'll be pleased to know I have most of your books as well. only most?
scott_saints Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 Also think it should be the first strip we ever had. Why not?
stockportsaint Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 (edited) It's a nice idea to commemorate 125 years although I'd have been equally happy with sponsorship of a charity like Villa does. Saints may sell more shirts to offset the loss of sponsorship. I note in the historical shirts link above that Pompey started out in a nice shade of salmon pink. Don't forget Barcelona and their UNICEF shirts - costs them (Barca) £1m a season I believe. Pompey's original nickname was The Shrimpers, although I'm not sure which came first, pink shirt or sh*t nickname. Back to the original thread, overall, a great idea. I have never been happy acting as an unpaid billboard, and have only ever bought 2 replica shirts with adverts on. Will definitely buy this one. Separate question - I note that the actual quote is: Southampton Football Club is delighted to announce that next season's home replica shirt will be without a headline sponsor.[/Quote] Does this mean that just the shirt WE can buy will be sponsor-free, or will the team also be wearing a sponsor-free shirt, a la Barca. Be great if it was the latter. As an afterthought - with all the various preferences about which historical strip they should resurrect, why not have a vote on the website as to which one they should use? Just as long as they find a way to stop P*mpey fans hijacking the vote - require login with membership number etc. Edited 2 February, 2010 by stockportsaint
adysaint Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 By 'Headline' sponsor does that mean the back of the shirt is still on offer? My Girlfriend while watching the Wolves game on Sky couple of seasons ago: "Is that team all brothers?" "Which team?" "The team your playing..." "No, why?" "Well they're all called Chaucer..." FFS!

Saint in Paradise Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 I have never before bought one but I will now and then when I die I can be cremated wearing it.
Essruu Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 .... a year of playing with Yellow shirts and blue shorts at home to commemorate our greatest day. That's what I was going to say too. A year of 'Yellows, Yellows, Yellows...' at home instead of away :-)
Redondo Saint Posted 2 February, 2010 Posted 2 February, 2010 Nice idea. Well done, happy to buy one when next back. The cynic in me will then open a sweepstake to see who is the first to say... "Clearly the recession is hitting football hard as Southampton struggle to find headline shirt sponsor for next season." Or "Clever way of covering up another snafu in the commercial department" :-) How about Flybe were asked to pay more next season but the two parties could not come to an agreement...? Keep in mind Flybe like the rest of aviation, is not having the greatest of times. If you read the on-line Echo their spin was a big loss to SFC as opposed to a commercial decision by Flybe to cut their advertising budget. - but then again I think The Echo currently have a vendetta against SFC!!!
westofshannonsaint Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 ........overall, a great idea. I have never been happy acting as an unpaid billboard, and have only ever bought 2 replica shirts with adverts on. Will definitely buy this one. Agreed & it will be nice to have a real shirt and not one of the ill fitting retro's for a change. great move by the club but I hope they keep the red and white stripes.
SamKimish Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 Here's a VERY rough attempt at what I would like to see, something similar to the 1980 kit.
GeckoSaint Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 Whatever happened to Gecko? Didn't he used to have something to do with shirt designs. May be wrong here... Am still here. On here pretty much everyday Perhaps he got bought out? http://www.geckosaint.com/ I've joined a network of freelance designers: http://www.designbychief.com I think you will find gecko has emigrated to Oz. Yes I've shifted off to Oz (Gold Coast to be exact) but am still very passionate about my Saints. If there is a thread about kit - I must get involved :-) For me if we're celebrating 125 years it has to be the original shirt from 1885, as much as I love the Keegan Patrick kit. So here are my first efforts: Thought we could have the sash but incorporate some stripes. Cheers
St.Patrik Posted 3 February, 2010 Author Posted 3 February, 2010 I agree #2 looks great. Nice work again Gecko !
ponto1963 Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 Here's a VERY rough attempt at what I would like to see, something similar to the 1980 kit. Love it. I wear the retro of this to games. Would really like a proper version as my original 80's one no longer fits.
ponto1963 Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 Umbro already do a similar kit to our 1885 one not a fan of it, but would be ok. http://www.umbrofootballkits.co.uk/catalogue_1.aspx?cat=6:139195&id2=6:2527&id2=6:2519&id2=6:2516&id=6:1444 They don't seem to do an 80's style at the moment though
saintalan Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 ... ... .. Love this one but what about shorts. Not sure black would look good, what were original shorts.
theyin Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 (edited) sash it up baby - I'm convinced this is the way to go white shorts and red stockings (why did they ever use that term?) Edited 3 February, 2010 by theyin because someone asked
SO16_Saint Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 Thought we could have the sash but incorporate some stripes. Cheers this one made me go all goose-pimply!!
St.Patrik Posted 3 February, 2010 Author Posted 3 February, 2010 I do hope you send this to the club Gecko !

It's garbage, I heard more than a month ago that Cortese wanted rid of flybe. We were never going to renew, and they don't fit the profile of companies we want to do business with any more.
ponto1963 Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 be interesting to see if Flybe are sponsoring anybody next season, with current climate they are probably cutting well back on who if any they sponsor

I also think that as the shirts are being brought out to celebrate the 125th Anniversary, some sort of mention should be made on the shirt of that fact. The addition of the words since 1885 on the sash in white between the stripes and the club logo would achieve that
Block 5 Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 I like the idea of a shirt similar to our first shirt. I would imagine that the crest would be redesigned or would revert to an older crest with some mention near the crest to the anniversary. "125th Anniversary 1885 - 2010".

I agree with Wes that a reference to the clubs 125th anniversary would be a good addition.

Hatch Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 I didn't like the idea of a sash at first, but when it's broken up , it does look better. How about the sash being 3 or 4 red diagonal stripes
Scummer Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 The sash design, especially using that Umbro template, looks incredibly 'polo'. Can just imagine Prince Charles wearing it.
shurlock Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 The sash design, especially using that Umbro template, looks incredibly 'polo'. Can just imagine Prince Charles wearing it. Just about sufferable as long as it doesn't extend to pony-fiddling gags.
doggface Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 From those designs I really like 1. however breaking up the sash in the others looks very very wrong IMHO.

Avenue Saint Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 (edited) The deal runs out at the end of the season. No-one is ending it. BOO to the Echo. More cheap shots. Poor form boycott! Gecko's shirts look good. Edited 3 February, 2010 by Avenue Saint
krissyboy31 Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 Love this one but what about shorts. Not sure black would look good, what were original shorts. Didn't have shorts, it had white knickerbockers.
View From The Top Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 . So here are my first efforts: Thought we could have the sash but incorporate some stripes. Cheers Me like. Lots.
London Saint Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 Me too!! I would vote for this design if I had the choice MODS - can you set up some sort of poll to see which one everyone likes best? Im sure someone from the Club will see it and get cracking on making it! cheers
Scummer Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 I got the impression from the story yesterday that the design has already been done.
Huntingdon Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 Me too!! I hate this kit I want traditional red & white stripes, this looks like a cheap version of Peru
Saint_clark Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 I got the impression from the story yesterday that the design has already been done. Same here. Great design from GeckoSaint all the same.
Scudamore Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 I like Gecko's but the more i think about it it really doesn't say Southampton FC to me to have that sash. Great as a third kit. But not our main strip.
Saint_clark Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 Gecko, what software do you use for making designs?
Saint_clark Posted 3 February, 2010 Posted 3 February, 2010 I like Gecko's but the more i think about it it really doesn't say Southampton FC to me to have that sash. Great as a third kit. But not our main strip. It was our first ever kit, so just having it for a season would be good.
