a nice gesture lets just hope they get the design right so we can recoup some of the losses with massive sales. Much as I like having a sugar daddy I don't like the idea that were he to withdraw his backing we'd be in a financial mess deeper than absolutely necessary.

I am very pleased at this news, and will be getting one.

I have to ask though, was this the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back as far as Flybe were concerned ?

Nice to know we dont actually need a shirt sponsor anymore.

Its been known that Cortese has been looking for a blue-chip sponsor for some time, and that flybe as a budget airline wasn't felt to reflect well upon Saints. There was never any question of renewing, and, just as Leicester have done on their home kit this season for their 125th Anniversary, it'll be nice not to have a sponsor for a change. Whether that means he just couldn't get us a big brand at the moment, or whether its a ploy to disassociate the club from the past with a view to selling the ad at higher rates the season after remains to be seen.

On an unrelated note, the shiny polyester (and therefore far more authentic) replicas of the 1980s Patrick kit now on sale in the club shop are vastly superior to the old cotton ones, though personally I'd still want an original or not bother.

I can see us staying with Umbro as per the original deal, which might even give us the possibility of one of their "tailored by" style shirts a la England and Man City, rather than the standard templates we have at the moment (2008/9 for the home and 2009/10 for the away, unsurprisingly). As their main selling point is uncluttered, classic tailoring of traditional-styled shirts, that would be perfectly in line.

Something in plain stripes would be fine by me. It does raise the spectre of the quartered shirts, and the less ugly white with red sash though. :smt103

Rumour is thats its going to be like the first umbro kit.

Um, unless I've missed some unbranded 1960s shirt, the current home one is the first Saints umbro kit, so I think we can rule that out...

Umbro made the kit from 1974 to 1976

Thanks, wasn't sure about that, as you can tell.

Mostly because half the time until the mid 70s they didn't even bother putting the logo on kits they made (eg England's 1966 shirts), but also due to the similarity of Saints, Sunderland, Stoke, Sheff U etc. kits until "kit design" came along, it was difficult to tell which was which in photos unless you knew the players - which I didn't, when I was 1-3 years old and had never heard of Southampton. :D

Either way, it doesnt matter - if the club was desperate about sponsorship, im sure it could find another sponsor. the fact is that its choosing not to -thats the bigger point.

The Club already has another sponsor, it is called The Mali Group. Just doesn't need to put it all over shirts and hoardings.

I'd like to see the 1885 kit as either our second or third kit anyway - and I have a feeling the current England kit with a diagonal red stripe will be the anniversary kit.

My favourite kit of all time if the 1976 -1980 kit as its a little bit different - followed by the early 80s kit.

The worst are undoubtedly the Pony and Hummel kits.

The current Umbro kit is the best we've had for quite a while!

Why do you have a problem if they used the 1885 style kit?

After all, it is to celebrate 125 years.

While I wouldn't be horrified if we had a one-off kit with the red sash, the way I look at is that we're going to be celebrating 125 years of our history, and not just the first year. For 100+ of those years we've worn some form of red & white stripes. Whatever way you look at it, red & white stripes are Southampton Football Club, and I'd like "our" kit to celebrate our long history of success (and failure), rather than just those first four years or so of informal competition on Southampton common...

Just my two penn'orth.

Sorry if I have missed this BUT is the new shirt actually going to be a team strip as well as an anniversary shirt for fans?

Well it had better be, the current team kit was originally a one year deal in 2008, then only extended into the second year of use due to flybe renewing for an additional season. Every other team wearing Umbro is already on their 2009/10 templates and we're already a season out of date.

Plus of course, how would it be a replica if it wasn't a copy of the real thing ?

Is that rumours on here or from a well placed source?

Are there any FL rules about what the shirt must look like? (apart from name and number stuff)

Other than where and what size the adverts are (FL rules), and that it can't be similar to the keeper's shirt (Laws of the game generally), I don't think there are. Though I suspect anything obscene would also fall foul of the FL... :D

Lets go proper retro with last game at the dell quaters for home shirt & white with red diagonal band for away shirts

What date does Flybe deal end?

As how cool would it be to get to play offs & wear new shirts without sponsor

Posted

Not sure if its been mentioned earlier as I only scanned the thread but while a logo free shirt is a great gesture to the fans, I personally wouldn't have an issue if the owners followed the lead of Aston Villa (Acorns) by having a local well deserving cause on the shirt such as Naomi House. Complete admiration for Randy Lerner at Villa for promoting this. Again sorry if been mentioned elsewhere

Shirt sponsorship deals are virtually 'free money' to football clubs and this news that we don't even need a sponsor anymore is proof positive (if anybody still doubted it) that this club is easily the best financed club outside of the Premier League . I wonder how this story will go down at the wrong end of the M27 . :)

Being a rich man's plaything certainly has its perks my friends - let's hope our 'sugar daddy' doesn't lose interest in us any time soon .

Don't think you could do that as they would both clash with the same kits.

It's all very simple...take picture of club legend in the glory days...

Base new kit on that...fitted and with all the mod cons...

So you are happy to walk around in something that looks like it was worn by your great great grandfather then? Personally i'd like something a little more modern, as when the team played in the last game at the Dell against Brighton the shirts they wore looked pretty naff, as do others with hundred odd year old designs. Something that acknowledges the past but is more modern would in my opinion be much better.

I agree with Scudamore, i reckon man city have done a great job with both there home and away kits this season. So taking a retro kit from the glory days could be a winner.

always thought the Palace under Venables kit of the 70's was class like our Admiral one of the same vintage. They did it again last year? and Man City have gone down the sash route again this season for their third kit.

I'm diggin the sash ala Peru, then again my earliest memories of the Dell were in the Patrick kit which was unreal, but then again my first Saints kit was the Admiral.

Now seriously undecided.

In NC we must trust

Will UMBRO borrow from another manufacturer's sartorial history though? Hmmm can't see it so Doggface's November thread could just hit the nail on the head unless they do the sash which was essentially a bit of ribbon tacked onto a white shirt.

Sh1t, Why is this taking up so much of my time?

Agree about Pony but Hummel was class.

Since the day I got pizza sauce over my yellow FA cup 30th anniversary shirt, I have longed for another sponsorless shirt! I curse that little red stain, I was going to frame it... stupid stupid stupid!

I will not make the same mistake, one shirt to be framed immediately, one for matchdays and one for the future!

Who needs sponsorship money when there's muppets about like me!

Thankyou ML and NC and all the St.Marys staff on a great decision.

I love being a Saint!

Yeah, but any kit by another manufacturer will look cack in recreation because it'll just look like a tacky knock-off (just like the rubbish effort at recreating the 1976 yellow kit a few seasons ago for the 30th anniversary, when they couldn't have the Admiral logos down the sleeve stripe, and the team didn't wear the same kit as the sponsorless replica anyway).

Umbro need to either create something basic so it looks traditional, or create something based on a pre-logo era kit. The "tailored by" range certainly looks like our best bet - even Man City have shown a sensitivity to tradition with the tiny sponsor's logo on their white away kit so it doesn't interfere with the integrity of the diagonal stripes - ours being completely sponsor-free will sell shedloads if it's just not actually ugly.

I did believe that but was just checking as some words have a way of duplicity, though thankfully not with our current owner & chairman.

So I assume we will have a sponsor free away strip in which case I would go for the 76 Final strip. I hate the current blue top.

Great news well done NC & ML. I hope its red & white stripes, my personal favourite is the Admiral Promotion shirt 1978 version. What a difference 6-months makes its great being a Saints fan at the moment. Long may it continue.

This would seem likely as it has to be an umbro kit!

Unfortunately all those nice kits like KK, 1976 etc will be copyrighted to other manufacturers so they, presumably, simply will not be happening.

The first umbro kit was from 1974 and was a reasonably modern version of classic red and white stripes, with a red collar. This would probably receive widespread approval and must start out as favourite I would think.

Against this is the theory that the kit should be as per 1885 regardless and I do quite like the red sash (we could just about borrow Man C away shirt). However, the new England shirt style with a sash must be in the frame if it is to be this one.

Nonetheless, logic points to the 1974-76 umbro kit which is a true representation of the red and white stripes which were the first kit worn under the name Southampton and have been worn in the majority of years since and which are universally recognised as the club's uniform.

I think it should be something a bit different so for me, it's 'Anything But Stripes'. Would be happy with the sash design, the Keegan era one or even a year of playing with Yellow shirts and blue shorts at home to commemorate our greatest day.

Surely it is only the REPLICA shirt that wont have sponsorship?!?!?! Otherwise they wouldnt have mentioned REPLICA shirt specifically?!!?

or am i missing something.

My hunch is that there will still be advertising of some kind on the teams home/away shirts but as a gift to the fans the 'replica' shirt wont.

Yeah my take too at first but then the Flybe announcement so does that mean both replica and home shirts will be sponsor name free?
