The Fat Controller Posted 31 January, 2010 Posted 31 January, 2010 Do you think either or both should be signed on a permanent basis.... your views?
S-Clarke Posted 31 January, 2010 Posted 31 January, 2010 I think Antonio is a dead cert. to sign on a perm deal, he's available for nothing and i cannot see pard's missing the opportunity to snap him up. Papa is a funny one, i don't think he's settled here 100%. He's got the ability, you cannot deny that - but i see him going back to Italy in the summer, can't see us spending the reported 1-2m to make it a perm. deal.
latter day saint Posted 31 January, 2010 Posted 31 January, 2010 i would sign both as they offer pace in attack, which we would lack otherwise. Papa has shown he has a nack of scorring & will get more, i think ,if given more time on the pitch. Antonio will be a free signing wont he? on wot i've seen i think that he would be a great signing for us especialy as he is still young & can only get better.
modern matron Posted 31 January, 2010 Posted 31 January, 2010 Do you think either or both should be signed on a permanent basis.... your views? Antonio for sure. Papa yes please but only if AP really believes in him (as I think he should)!
jimmysaint7 Posted 31 January, 2010 Posted 31 January, 2010 i would sign them both.think they both have something to offer
Ludwig Posted 31 January, 2010 Posted 31 January, 2010 Wouldn't we have to pay a development fee to Reading for Antonio? I'm not sure we ought to get both, I think it would really depend upon how settled (both to our game, the English game and the lifestyle) Waigo is by the end of the season, because he's 'better' than Antonio.
Gigersaint Posted 31 January, 2010 Posted 31 January, 2010 I think that we should sign Papa, after he came on yesterday he had an instant impact, first of all winning the corner that led to the first goal and then scoring the second one. Before he came on we looked to be heading for a 0-0 draw. Even to keep him as a player that can come on and change a game rather than a starting player I still think he is worth keeping hold of.
The Fat Controller Posted 31 January, 2010 Author Posted 31 January, 2010 I'd like to sign Antonio , he has pace and isn't scared to take players on. Papa will command a decent fee but he is becoming a worthwhile player to keep and develop pending him settling down in this country
Pat from Poole Posted 31 January, 2010 Posted 31 January, 2010 I think Antonio is a dead cert. to sign on a perm deal, he's available for nothing and i cannot see pard's missing the opportunity to snap him up. Papa is a funny one, i don't think he's settled here 100%. He's got the ability, you cannot deny that - but i see him going back to Italy in the summer, can't see us spending the reported 1-2m to make it a perm. deal. I thought it was a lot less than that to sign Papa. I'm sure I read £400,000 - £500,000 around the time he first came here. Whether we should sign them both or not depends on which League we'll be in. I'd keep them both if we're still in Div 3, but not on long contracts. I am a bit concerned that we are signing players on contracts that are too long, if and when we get promoted a lot of the players won't be good enough for Div 2.
SuperSAINT Posted 31 January, 2010 Posted 31 January, 2010 I think we'll sign Antonio, and not Papa. The one thing we know Papa provides is pace. But the transfer fee and wages for him would be pretty high for someone who can't force their way into the 1st XI. With that leaving a lack of pace up front, maybe we'll go for Simeon Jackson in the summer? - He'll only have 12 months on his Gillingham contract by then.
B Rabbit Posted 31 January, 2010 Posted 31 January, 2010 send Antonio packing Obviously haven't been to the last few games have you
saint-ross Posted 31 January, 2010 Posted 31 January, 2010 Obviously haven't been to the last few games have you Or maybe only saw the game yesterday? I'd have em both, papa was awesome yesterday. Antonio is a great prospect and a must if we can get him for nowt!
saint_stevo Posted 31 January, 2010 Posted 31 January, 2010 Obviously haven't been to the last few games have you which ones in particular........? Pretty sure you didnt go yesterday...?
sifter Posted 31 January, 2010 Posted 31 January, 2010 Depends on how well puncheon settles in and how good they all perform in next 4 months. Too early for either of them to be certs to stay or go.
SFC Forever Posted 31 January, 2010 Posted 31 January, 2010 Are they good enough in Pards mind for the CCC? If yes then a no brainer.
hypochondriac Posted 31 January, 2010 Posted 31 January, 2010 Really like Waigo. We won't sign him but we should.
doggface Posted 31 January, 2010 Posted 31 January, 2010 I would like to sign both but it seems pards does not rate papa. That said pards has changed his mind about a couple of players. Seems like papa has a good attitude, would like to see him given more game time, especially upfront where he linked well with lambert unlike Barney unfortunately.
Gordon Mockles Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 I think a clear & resounding Yes. Both players have scored vital goals which have, in turn, helped win vital games & the pair each work very well as match defining (impact) subs. Ok, they have their faults but their contribution & creation far outweigh their weaknesses. Besides, I truly believe their potential to improve is massive (a million times more than over-rated idiots like McGoldrought!). Antonio is still so young & Waigo still learning the English game, yet their contributions & stats now speak clearer than many fickle, arm chair fans that were shouting such idiotic responses at various instances Saturday afternoon. They both share some welcome traits. Main being a superb mental attitude & determination (despite not often starting, particularly Papa) & their obvious pace & bustle to hassle/worry defenders. Good team spirit, they seem to play without arrogance & display a distinct eagerness to improve & learn (for both the squad & themselves)...IMHO.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 Antonio is a no-brainer yes...he's got better since he arrived and will continue to grow, he's settled here now getting a good number of starts, he's taking his chance and playing well and he's free in the summer. Cannot see AP sending him packing now. Waigo is a bit of a strange one. He's worth between £2m-£4m supposedly on paper and he does have skill and pace. On balance he provides something different to any other striker and he is a striker...not a winger. I think if he wants to stay he will get a contract but only if we go up and so can justify the fee.
Saint_clark Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 I'm not convinced by people who sat that Pardew doesn't rate Waigo. He's just been rotating his squad very well based on fitness and form.
St Landrew Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 I'd sign both in the summer, if possible. They've proved their worth. From the players perspective, I think Antonio would sign, but Papa might wish to return to Italy. Having discovered that he can't speak English, I believe that could be the barrier to his staying. Which would be a shame, because not only is he a good player, but he's a character as well. As a person, AP speaks very highly of him too.
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 Both if possible, they're unpredictable but decent, and better than what we've had for a couple of years.
Chez Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 Sign Papa send Antonio packing you really don't like him do you? Each to their own I suppose, but IMO he's been terrific in the majority of games for us and especially since he got back in the side after the nightmare at SMS against Tranmere.
Avenue Saint Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 would sign up antonio n offer them 700k for papa. would be worth every last penny.
Appy Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 I'd take them both. Antonio is an exciting prospect and when Papa is settled i think he will be a key player for us, he just needs a run of games me thinks.
gaz Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 I'd take both of them, they are quality and I was as surprised as anyone that they agreed to come here. CCC quality would be fantastic for next season whichever league we're in.
david in sweden Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 Do you think either or both should be signed on a permanent basis.... your views? YES to both . Antonio is on loan and free in May. Papa Waigo is worth the investment if he can be consistant enough to stay ONSIDE more often, and continue scoring vital goals in Cup matches. He's certainly a good change player (no insult to him) whilst Antonio is learning his game. The answer to that one should be clear to all by May.
Saint_Ash Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 Get them both in, I can see Papa being a cult hero. Especially as I reckon his goals will win us the JPT trophy. Would be sweet for him to bag the winner at Wembley!
Ken Tone Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 Wouldn't we have to pay a development fee to Reading for Antonio? . Good question. Normally would have to pay if we sign a player of his age ... IF Reading offered him a contract at the end of the season. But then Reading only signed him from non-league over the summer, so they have hardly developed him, have they? He'll have been here more than there. Presumably the rules must involve some element relating to length of time on books? Anyone sure of the rules? K.
corsacar saint Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 Hopefully we will sign them both permanently in the summer. They both have pace to burn, and that is a big plus in any side in any league. They are both improving game by game as well.
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 (edited) Antonio - Although young and still learning his trade you can see this lad can really play . Just about quick enough to pose the opposition problems and good technically (especially his close control) when you add in the proven ability to score then he must go down as a really good prospect . I see him potentialy developing into a winger at least as good as Nathan Dyer - if not better . Out of contract I believe in the summer this decision really is a 'no brainer' IMO and whoever spotted this lad languishing unwanted in Reading FC's reserve team deserves a pat on the back . Papa Waigo - What I like about this player is that he makes things happen . As last Saturdays game showed he can shake things up and arguably he provides our attack with a touch of class and pace that lower league defences find really hard to cope with . While he's not perhaps the brightest player ever to don a Saints shirt (which may explain the managers obvious reservations about him) I'd say he's worth keeping if he wants to stay , but only if the price is right . derry Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 We signed Waigo as a striker who could play wide then hardly played him up front. When he has played there except for a couple of early games when he had offside problems he has been very dangerous. He can score goals regularly so we should give him an extended run up front and play Antonio wide right. Adding Puncheon's pace will balance things out and give Lambert the room to play. Pace is the vital x factor we are short of, only Waigo and Antonio have had it to date. I would like us to sign them both.
TheSaint75 Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 Sign them both as long as the price is right and they want to be here In different ways they can turn games either through pace or unpredictability.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 Good question. Normally would have to pay if we sign a player of his age ... IF Reading offered him a contract at the end of the season. eelpie Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 No brainer imo. They have both in their different ways proved to be match-winners and are entertainers who enliven games! Play 'em and sign 'em. With 'itinerant' (AP's description) Puncheon in the team I am looking forward to watching some exciting and unpredictable matches ahead. Lots of victories, and fewer boring moments.
Dr Who? Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 I really wopuld want them to both be signed for next season, I think they both have what it takes at this level and in the Championship, so we could sign them on for 2 or 3 years and see how they develope.
Stubby Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 Yes, both. They should both improve considerably over the next year or so.
Andy_Porter Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 I'd take them both, should be are main pieces of business in the summer followed by a right back.
beatlesaint Posted 1 February, 2010 Posted 1 February, 2010 Antonio is our player - he signed a 6 month contract in December. Where have you got that from ? I thought we simply extended his loan until the end of the season when he will be out of contract with Reading. I would sign both of them without a doubt.
