St Landrew Posted 30 January, 2010 Share Posted 30 January, 2010 ...author of Catcher In The Rye, has died. It's one of those events where something goes off your personal map. You think these people will be around forever, but they are mortal, after all. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8486169.stm
Deppo Posted 30 January, 2010 Share Posted 30 January, 2010 Apparently he was quite reclusive. There is the prospect of all his other material being released now, including around 15 novels.
Block 5 Posted 30 January, 2010 Share Posted 30 January, 2010 I read 'Catcher in the Rye' when I found out that Mark Chapman had a copy in his pocket when he murdered John Lennon. Fantastic novel. It had such a profound effect on me that I attempted to assassinate Paul McCartney. Unfortunately I couldn't find out where he lived and couldn't get a gun. I think that you'll find that CITR still sells about a quarter of a million copies annualy already. I may give it a read someotime, but the Chapman link puts me off a little. Ludwig Posted 30 January, 2010 Share Posted 30 January, 2010 Why on earth should that put you off? Read it, immediately.
Deppo Posted 31 January, 2010 Share Posted 31 January, 2010 I read it cover to cover in about four hours when I was sixteen, including ISBN numbers. I'm like that robot in Short Circuit.
Deppo Posted 31 January, 2010 Share Posted 31 January, 2010 Although he'd have done it in about 30 seconds.
hamster Posted 31 January, 2010 Share Posted 31 January, 2010 Why on earth should that put you off? Read it, immediately. Because i understood at the time that the reading of it might lead one to murder one's hero. I convinced myself that had I purchased and read said novel, Paul Danials life might be at risk. Mrs h reckons that it is too depressing a book for someone of my sensitivity and being a Piscean I would tend to err on the side of caution, thank you very much.
