The Fat Controller Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 its likely he will be the sub keeper and hopefully The our supporters will forget the rivalry for a couple of minutes give him a decent ovation when he comes out, and no doubtedly he will do the same back being the club legend he is.
ringwood Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 Niemi should be praised for taking their wage and helping to push them to the edge. Always a star in RED n WHITE , the fact he may play for the skates will not dull the memory, you should be treated with respect until the whistle blows to start the game, as soon as the whistle ends the game hes back in the respect zone in between he should be treated as any skate should with total disrespect.
StuRomseySaint Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 The case in 99.99999% of the time, could you name 20 Footballers who were/are any different ? I'm not saying that, but I will remember the times when Niemi was here fondly, I don't give a monkeys who is wearing the 11 P*mpey shirts, they will all get an equal level of abuse from me. No room for sentiment when it comes to P*mpey.
oxfordshire_saint Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 If he plays and we boo him, he'll probably have a blinder. We should show some class and applaud him for what he did here, save the bile for whatever 10 assorted half-hearted loanees and African mercenaries line up infront of him. As it happens, it'll most likely be Ashdown and he strikes me as the sort of lad who'll crumble if we get at him and crank up the abuse.
Chez Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 seeing as he has taken over £200,000 off them without contributing in any way, we can say that agent Niemi has does a tremendous job to date. However should he be asked to play in that game I would expect him to have a recurence of his knee `injury'
Bourno Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 If he plays and we boo him, he'll probably have a blinder. Agreed, we should show some class, this will be on national TV and he was a great servant to the club.
Um Bongo Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 For the 90 minutes if he played, I would treat him as a pompey player. Before and after he is, for me, the best goalkeeper I have ever seen for Southampton. And therefore he earns my respect. The save against Villa at home is one I will always remember.
david in sweden Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 Niemi is a saints legend and always will be apart from during the 90 minutes of this tie assuming he plays. I'd expect him to recieve a warm welcome and and even warmer departure if we win. During the game I expect him to get some stick nothing like as much as James would have got but he will take some especially if there is a penalty situation. Best goal keeper I've ever seen in a saints shirt so good I can even over look his signing for pompey! depending on your generation ..you're probably right . If you were a bit older, you'd have to say that at times Peter Shilton looked totally unbeatable..and his 51 caps for England (during his time with us 1982 -1987) goes to prove that.......but I agree that Niemi was a bit special.

I was a wee bit young to appreciate Shilts, I do like looking back at our list of past keepers as it contains some absolute quality. Niemi came in at a time when I thought Jones for all his detractors was doing a pretty decent job and would be hard to displace, Niemi managed to make him look incredibly below par and must represent one of the best value for money signings of that era.

There's no doubt that Niemi's quality ..rather than Jones' lack of it ...meant that the Finn was usually got to be first choice. Ironically, they both played in the FA Cup Final..and prompting the now legendary pub quiz question: "Which 'keeper played in an FA Cup Final without conceding a goal, but only got a losers medal ?" It was of course Paul Jones.Arsenal scored whilst Niemi was in goal, who later in the game pulled a muscle and was subbed by PJ..who despite keeping a clean sheet, only got a losers medal.
Window Cleaner Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 I'd be really pleased, he's a geriatric who'll gift us a shedload of goals.
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 The last time Niemi played in a south coast derby he let in 4 goals......I'd welcome him with open arms :-)
CFSFC Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 Sod him anyone who plays for them is a class a idiot. I would not be clapping/singing niemi rubbish.... oooooooooohhhhhhhhh you skate ba*tard.
Jones91 Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 when niemi lets in a goal, we all worship him like when le tiss took corners simples
rooney Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 This will not be a problem as he will not play with that bad knee...Coles will.
Sheaf Saint Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 The last time Niemi played in a south coast derby he let in 4 goals......I'd welcome him with open arms :-) In which case I hope he plays. I remember watching the players coming out of the tunnel for that game on TV and Antti had a look on his face similar to a rabbit caught in headlights.

Have to agree that shilts would be number 1
Ewell Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 For me he is one of the greatest keepers to play for us and he made a massive impact. I could never boo him for that reason alone! I just hope he performs as well as he did in the last south coast derby he played in!
Window Cleaner Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 Have to agree that shilts would be number 1 Shilton even scored a goal (against us ) directly from a goal kick,Neil Crossley also scored a goal against us. Can't be many teams that have had 2 opposition keepers score against them.
Denzil Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 I will give him hell and throw batteries and coins at him.
ulstersaint Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 Deserves respect, both as a player and as a person Spot on. Perhaps the best goalkeeper in Saints' history - and we had Shilton.
Spudders Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 seeing as he has taken over £200,000 off them without contributing in any way, we can say that agent Niemi has does a tremendous job to date. Exactly. I hope he does play and let's in another 4 goals.
