Underwhelming transfer news, we are after players from Crawley Town? I know sometimes there are gems in non-league, but is this really what we are looking for right now? No offence to the fella, had never heard of him before, not that that makes any difference.

He's really good according to my Crawley supporting mate.

Chris Smalling was a non league player 18 months ago.

Now he is about to be a £10m Man Utd player.

I watch alot of non league football mate and I can tell you that there is alot of talent down there, even at my club AFC Totton we have at least two players who in my opinion are good enough for the football league.

Look at Charlie Austin at Swindon. Signed from Poole Town and scored something like 9 goals in 13 games. Worth a punt, wouldn't be on alot of money if he signed.

Out of contract at the end of June. He only signed until the end of the season.

was at Southend, and played on loan at Salisbury so have seen him play several times. quick, strong, fleet footed and can play up front or on either wing, looks a little like Antonia...

Got alot of potential, so would be a good signing maybe not for this season but certainly next IMO

Agreed, and I did make that point, Antonio too was non-league 12 months ago, Ian Wright another good example. What surprises me with this is that we have a squad already of about 40 players, do we really need someone who will sit on the bench sometimes, maybe get occassional game in the ressies? AP is going to have a tough job keeping all these players happy. I also note that he already has league experience, Southend clearly did not feel he had the potential and released him after 4 years, he has played for a host of non-league teams, including Salisbury, and has injury problems too. He is also not a kid, 21 already. Our transfer policy at the moment seems a bit odd, buying in decent experienced players for relatively large sums, but also picking up inxeperienced non-league players, we'll have enough players soon to loan a whole team to AFC Portsmouth (except the rules don't allow it of course).

I am all for giving players a fair go, and he could turn out to be one of the good one, or could be utter rubbish, but you will not know unless you give him a punt.

Cheap, and could get him on a short contract, and if proves to be good get him on a longer contract quickly!!!

As I said earlier,if we can sign him could be good.

According to a family friend who watches Crawley regularly but was a wimp recently as he thought Gateshead was too far to go say Charlie is very good - Much too good for Crawley

I've got a mate up north who reackons we have also been watching a lad called Tristan Hamilton-Hendricks, plays for Nantwich Town at the moment but was on Crewe Alexandras books for a while but didn't work out apparantly. Really quick winger with a big reputation in those parts, aparantly a few clubs up north are interested as well. Obviously one for the future but could be a good signing, my mate reckons he is a class act.

Love this quote,

"He looked very sharp in training today and he hit the back of the net four times in the practice match we had, his finishing was classy and sublime."

Putting him in the shop window much?

Looks like we're grabbing lots of potential for the future - it's cheap out there at the moment so a wise move.

We could always buy every decent player out there to deny other teams an advantage, bit like landbanking for supermarkets :)

what players in non league football do you know (Luton apart)?

Like you say there are real gems in non league if you know where to look. And gems are exactly what we need right now, tomorrow and any other day of the week, so I don't understand your post at all. Don't worry about whether you know them, where they came from, just care about how good they are.

Perhaps your mate is taking the p!ss.

Was he recommended by Mr Cholmondely-Warner ?

I like these rumours. Watched a fair bit of non league and there's some decent players out there aged 18-23. Most of them would have been released from an Academy of a League team and dropped down a few divisions. Chris Smalling was at Millwall before being released. 3 years ago he joined Maidstone United in the Ryman Premier. Look where he is now.

Sounds like the scouting network is starting to bear some fruit. It's an area that's needed improvement for a long while. Very encouraging.

He's a little bit special I've seen him, Charlie McDonald & Ben Strevens (now Brentford) and JP Pittman (now Wycombe) all whilst playing for Crawley and this guy shows the most promise for me.

Not sure what he would be like in the Championship but reckon he's more than up to Div 1

As I mentioned on the HCDAJFU thread, Crawley is my second team and I've watched them play a few times this season. Charlie is easily Crawley's best player, he's quick, agile and scores goals. He's one of those players that gets you out of your seat with excitment when he gets the ball and starts running down the wing.

Whether he can step up a couple of leagues remains to be seen, but if Saints don't buy him someone from L1 at least is going to pick him up. I'll be sad to see him leave Crawley (they need the cash) becuase he's pretty much worth the cost of a (Crawley) match ticket on his own.

A few clubs are after him with Swindon especialy keen.

Lest we forget, Jermaine Beckford also came from non-league (and there was a lot of talk about "should we sign him" then, and look how he's done!), as did Michael Kightly. I'm not saying everyone is a success, but if you can afford to take a gamble (I'd think differently if we only had funds to sign one play say), why not? I've never seen him, but according to the few on here that have, he sounds like a punt worth taking.

Always good to keep an eye on non-league scene. I have seen a lot of Farnborough this year and they have some cracking players there. Dean McDonald, who scored a great goal against us in pre-season, and has played for Ipswich in Championship is scoring loads of goals there and I reckon could play at a much higher level.

As said before, if you pick up a non-league gem then you can make some great money on them - just like Fulham have with Smalling.

Is Blue Square Prem governed by the transfer window?

I guess we could always take him on loan when that window opens, with a view to permanent move in the summer.

If it was us that agreed a deal.

Good to hear Saints are keeping tabs on the non league scene. Definately some bargains to be had.

Agree

Our scouting network in the lower leagues needed some focus, and it appears we now have this.

I always remember Stuart Pearce joining Coventry from Wealdstone back in the 80's, and he made that big step up effortlessly.

There are gems to be found!
