Window Cleaner Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 I wouldn't say i'm an expert, but I follow the scottish leagues and Scott Arfield is certainly one of the better players outside the Old Firm clubs in the SPL. He's on the verge of a Scotland call-up and was linked with Celtic and Rangers recently I believe, as well as a couple of Championship clubs. £1m may be a little too much for him, but if that's what it takes to bring him here and Markus is willing to spend the money then I say go for it. He won't be a marquee player for this team, but I have every confidence that he'll be a very important player for us if he signs. So a player "on the verge of a Scotland call up" can be bought for 400K£? You won't get into the England squad with a market value of under 20 million (unless you're a goalkeeper, for that you just need a pair of boots)
(not THE) Kevin Moore Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 Skacel scored a shedload of goals in Scotland but didn't do much for us. Falkirk are the worst team in the Scottish prem apparently, their own manager said they were useless in their last game. This lad needs to prove himself in the Conference or something before anyone pays good money for him. We have 3 midfielders James, Hammond and Morgan, play them in a 442 with Lallana and 2 strikers or in 451 with Antonio (or Papa) and 1 striker and they're all we need.Whilst Hammond is unavailable we need to play James,Morgan and Wotton and Gillett or Gobern if necessary. We have gone transfer crazy of late.We had a team that was winning games, we change it and it goes tits up. You're seriously suggesting that bottom end of the Scottish Prem is of a lower standard than the conference? REALLY? I'd say that his record sounds pretty good and he could be a world beater and Falkirk could still be where they are if the rest of the players were crap. In Pards we trust, if we get him I will watch with interest.

yorkiesaint Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 We are playing 4 5 1 because our midfielders aren't good enough to play 4 4 2, and we need 5 to do the job of 4. We desperately need better midfielders so we can unleash the combinations of front men we have, lambert and connolly or lambert and barnard.

You won't get into the England squad with a market value of under 20 million (unless you're a goalkeeper, for that you just need a pair of boots) Price doesn't necessarily denote quality imo. Look at Heskey, he's being touted around for close to £10m and he's sh*t. Thing is, there aren't many players in the SPL outside the Old Firm clubs that would be worth more than 500k, but I would put Arfield in that category. If you see him play you'll see he's very industrious, good on the ball and a decent ball-winner as well. He's neither a midfield general or your flair-ridden Iniesta type, but he does his job very well and what he gives to a team can be vital at times. I firmly believe he could be a fantastic signing for us at this level, and he could certainly play a big part in the CCC too.

But Hamilton Academicals did offer just 100,000 £ for him didn't they? you would think a scottish side playing in the same league would know what a player was worth wouldn't you;) He probably isn't any better than LLoyd James, not saying that in a derogatory way.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 Ill pop down and watch him play tomorrow. @ Rangers
Window Cleaner Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 Ill pop down and watch him play tomorrow. @ Rangers what and not give us the benefit of your encyclopaedic knowledge on the match thread? Anyway Rangers will tonk Falkirk and the boy won't get a look in.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 what and not give us the benefit of your encyclopaedic knowledge on the match thread? Good point! Ill get feed-back from da Rangers fans Monday. By all accounts they seem to speak real high of him here. Supposed to be very much 'one for the future'

I think that's called testing the waters, clubs do that all the time by putting in low offers to see another club's valuation of a player so they don't bid too high. He's worth much more than 100k though, I think they were taking the p*ss a bit there. Hamilton aren't exactly flush with cash though. Personally I think he is better than Lloyd James, i'm yet to be impressed by him in a central midfield role, and I wouldn't pick him there over a fully fit Hammond or Schneiderlin. Not saying that James is a bad player, I do rate him, but I do think that he looked better at RB because he just tends to get physically dominated in CM. Not such a big issue if you've got your Wotton type player to bail him out and break a few legs, but I think he could easily get caught out against bigger players.
spyinthesky Posted 29 January, 2010 Posted 29 January, 2010 Isnt our old friend Pele now on the books of Falkirk (but recently injured?)

Correct me if I'm wrong but Arfield isn't a Charles Atlas replica either is he? I certainly wouldn't spend money on him outright, I'd want a loan period first and I'd certainly never sign him instead of a known value like Danns.
