Excellent explanation Marco. Thanks.

But that's very different to what the Echo say - they reckon there was no aggreement about no printing the stpry. So who is right?

By Ian Murray »

While this paper is a champion of free speech and seldom reacts to the comments added to articles on our website, I do feel that there is a need to remove any confusion surrounding the present ban by Saints chairman Nicola Cortese on the Daily Echo.

The ban originated after we printed an article about plans to develop the Staplewood training ground.

This news was never subject to an embargo from the club. The word embargo was never used, nor any indication given that the plans - already lodged with New Forest District Council and in the public domain - were subject to an embargo.

The story had already run on Eurosport and Sky Sports, while the BBC locally ran the story the following day before the Daily Echo hit the streets.

This was not unusual as the news was already being widely discussed on fans' forums, who had, like us, seen the plans on the council's website.

In short, the Daily Echo was not in breach of any embargo.

Why Mr Cortese decided to impose a ban is something only he can answer. We were informed Mr Cortese was keen to meet and discuss the matter, yet he has never responded to phone calls, cancelled a meeting he arranged, and as yet has failed to give any explanation.

Those, to date, are the facts.

The Daily Echo continues to provide comprehensive, independent coverage of the club, of which we remain staunch supporters.

The Echo is ****, has always been ****. I have only bought one in the last few years to see a particular photo of me or mates at the games, never to read the rag.

So, I'll continue to do that and that only. I would say that if you buy one as a reflex every day, actually read whats in it and you'll soon realise that you should save your money.

Posted

Haven't bought a copy since about 1985. But i think the Echo needs to know that if it ends up as a big fight between the club and paper then there's only one side fans are going to support at the moment.

Posted
never bought a copy of the echo in my life. I'll boycott it quite easily

Erm, how can you boycott something you never buy?

I'm happy to buy and read our only local newspaper. It's not perfect but then neither is SFC. This is a childish dispute between DE and SFC, which needs sorting out.

They are wrong. They were told but more importantly told to wait 24hrs before printing it so they could include the details from the press conference.

Everyone knew what the conference was for. They didn't ring the echo and go

"hi yeah we have a press conference tomorrow, it is super duper secret, you will have to wait and see what it is about as it is a surprise".

That is not how it works. Especially in regards to building things which need planning permission.

Everyone knew what it was about (the planning application was in the public domain). The Echo screwed up and now are trying to save face by writing that above. Which just makes them look even bigger tits.

If i was NC i would just release the email/letter he sent them requesting them to hold back 24hrs. But he is not like that it would seem, he is not interested in point scoring in a childish spit for spat, rather choosing to get on with the job. How refreshing it is to have people like that inside our club hey.

Living in the Fareham area, my Mrs regularly buys the "News" (she likes the crossword *sigh*). One thing I will say is that the News is always very supportive of their club. On the rare occations I buy the Echo, it does seem to snipe and whinge about Saints. Shame really.

Having a grandparent who suffers from dementia i was totally disgusted to see the Daily Echo use that charity and exploit it for their political ammo. I have now penned a letter of complaint to the names mentioned on here Banks and Davidson. I like many want Ian Murray out of the Daily Echo for his disgusting conduct.

I cant believe people are getting these petty about it. Its a spat between 2 companies that should never even had started! I bet no one moaning here is going to Boycott Sky or the BBC for running all the same stories (apart from the dementia one) Me personally I think NC is throwing his toys out the pram because he can, and most guys in his position do over silly things. This all started because of something that was in the public domain ie New Forest District Council Website, that then appeared in SKY, BBC and then on here, so the echo as the local rag had every right to write a story about Staplewood.

Would be interesting if NC said something against the running of Saintweb and its content, as Im sure most would be dead against that!

The other thing to consider is that fact that most people on here are saying "Ill never buy it again" FFS !!! I suspect most dont even buy it anyway and read it online. The people it is harming and will harm if this stupid spat continues is people like my Dad, who isnt on the internet and does buy the Echo to catch up on Saints.

So Im hoping Ian Murry / Nicola Cortese sit down and sort this out

St Marco's post at the top of this page is worth a read.

I guess we all feel more protective of our club than we do of the Echo.

I won't be buying the Southern Daily Echo either, until such a time as the spiteful bile from Ian Murry stops, along with an apology; or even more preferably, he resigns or is removed from his position.

St. Marco's explanation is as close as I think we have to the 'truth' of what happened, and is backed up and mentioned further by some interesting comments after this pathetic article:

I have read it, and still makes no difference. I agree the echo story that was published was nothing more than what everyone knew. (Although people without the internet or sky and there are a few didnt know anything about it until it was in the Echo) The next day the Echo would have gone to the press conference and then done a big continued story with more details.....whats the problem

As I said above my Dad is quite annoyed at NC as the whole thing is sham.

Whats more I know of another company who wanted to use sms as a product / service launch and and are now looking at going to the De Vere as they want the Echo and local press there?

I'm sorry that your Dad is affected by this.

Although I'm sure that you probably could provide your Dad with more Saints related news than the Echo ever could.

All of the above people are known to me on a personal basis. They could be the innocent victims of this boycott. They could lose their jobs. They could lose everything. Why? Because some idiots on here would rather see families and lives destroyed than entertain the idea that NC may be a little in the wrong.

I hope you're all proud of yourselves. When John comes down the path with my paper in hand I'll be sure to pass on your best wishes, he'll need it after he loses his paper-round and can't afford his lunch at school. His mum doesn't give him anything, so he fends for himself. Or at least he tries to.

Next time I pop into the newsagent and see Haydn, I shall pass on your best wishes and explain to him why his shop is empty. I'll give him a shoulder to cry on. He's on his own now his wife left him. He doesn't have the support at home that some of you will have during your "boycott".

Next time I'm having a pint with my mate Peter, I'll be sure to take some extra money, just in case he's been laid off and can't even afford a pint with a friend. I'll make sure he knows that the boycott that cost him his job was done for a good reason. He can tell that to Sally, his wife. She'll need the comforting after their new born baby

I know these two. The boy delivers papers to my Dad and Hayden is the chap who gives John the papers to deliver! I think I know where you live. My Dad has been going into haydens shop for years and knows him quite well. I used spend a lot of time in there when I was little. Apparently, and this may change your position on the matter, paperboy John does not use the money for lunch, he buys drugs with it. Hayden told my dad that he knows that is what John is using the money for, but he delivers the papers well and would struggle to find a replacement. So, by supporting the echo people are actually supporting drug use. I for one don't want to be part of that, so I will be boycotting the paper.

The fact that the article 'some how' appeared online is irrelevant when you are asked not to print it and wait for the proper press conference. The Echo are supposedly a working partner with the Club and they freely give them exclusives to print. This 'public domain' stuff is total rubbish. Nobody searches a planning website looking unless they know its there. It was leaked on purpose and i guess who did that. So Mr Cortese was bang to rights in banning the Echo. Their subsequent behaviour has been disgusting especially the charity exploit.

As for your dad i suggest he reads it while he can as its well known that print will soon totally die. It will become a free hand out like the advertiser and the main news online.

Even if the Echo packed up, which it won't, he'd still have a paper round. There are other newspapers you know. I had two paper rounds whilst I was at school, and I delivered approximately 0 Daily Echoes.

The Echo might well not be a great paper, but it is the only one we have in our area. It appears to be owned by an american company? That is a problem we have as a nation which will hardly be helped by an andry boycott by the Echo. (Remember Cadburys?) Local charities also needs publicity, and they rely on the Echo amongst other media. Banning journalists from the SMS building on a non-footballing event is going way over the top.

The OS and the Forum reaches a limited number of diehard fans, no more. The rest are reached by BBC South and Radio Solent, and the Echo, which also publishes the Pink.

The cavalier attitude to press freedom here I find quite breath taking. This is a country which has fought for freedom, let's stick to that proud history. It didn't come with conditions that it had to suit various businessmen.

NC and the Echo needs to sit down and start again, this will just not do.

I can confirm that this is true. For exapmle I had a Sunday paper round for a while and this is a classic example of being able to be employed as one but not delivering the Echo. I was in Fareham at the time so even if I had done a weekday round there was little call for the Echo in that area.

Poor journalism...led by someone who it seems would use a charity to get in digs at SFC.

We needed their support against Lowe and Wilde and got.....NOTHING.

What goes around comes around eventually.

What are you going on about!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Echo DID GET LOWE AND WILD OUT!!!! The Echo's continual barbaric bombardment of Lowe was getting really tiresome - putting aside the personalities and opinions, they stoked it up EVERY DAY. Christ the Royal 'we' too mate - count me out of your 'we' please, I want no part of your 'have it both ways' bitterness.....

Given that most of the population of the UK doesn't buy their local newspaper these days, I reckon a few embittered football fans boycotting the Echo won't make much difference.

That is aside from the fact that several people who have signed up to the petition say they didn't buy it in the first place. The Echo is just doing its job. That being to write stories about what goes on in Southampton.

Get over it and move on.

I'm no big fan of the Echo but I think there’s a lot of overreaction on here. People are jumping to conclusions, and even St. Marco’s helpful summary contains a number of personal opinions that – as far as I can see - have no clear basis in fact.

Numerous people have said the Echo did this just to sell more papers. They say this every time the Echo does something to p*ss them off. Seriously, do people honestly believe that? Think about it for a minute, and then tell me how many fit into this category: "Ooh look, there's a story about the Saints' training ground plans (or whatever) in today's Echo so, even though we never buy it, let's buy it today."

The Echo is a newspaper and it has a moral, legal and corporate obligation to be just that – to tell stories and break news. If they feel something is newsworthy, they have every right and every duty to run the story. If they don’t they are just a shill and a puppet for whoever wants them NOT to run the story. If something is in the public domain, there is no such thing as an embargo because it has already been broken.

I’m completely with Clifford Nelson on this because press freedom (whether I like what they say or not) is at the core of any democracy.

And I’ll ask this yet again, for the umpteenth time. Would people have the same reaction if the Echo did this to Lowe and vice versa? There can’t be two different answers to that question that depend on results or anything else.

The Echo really p*ssed me off today by taking another run at Cortese. I think that was stupid and arrogant, but it’s not going to blind my judgment.

We don’t KNOW if the Echo was right or wrong in this and we don’t KNOW if Cortese has overreacted. We don’t KNOW if the Echo really did extend the olive branch, and we don’t KNOW that Cortese rejected it. We don’t KNOW these things because we don’t have all the facts.

What I DO know is that it’s going to take maturity to resolve it, and that’s what I’d be crying out for now.

The Echo does have form for this. They routinely place a story regarding large employers such as Skandia and B & Q on the front page irrespective of the its importance as they know its boost circulation by a significant percentage. Whilst they have a job (I cannot call it a moral obligation like some) to print the news, they are a commercial organisation and impact on circulation will always figure into what they regard as newsworthy.

Some people do buy papers based on headlines. Why else do papers chase exclusives? If the echo ran a story with the headline "Wayne Rooney signs for saints" then people will buy, beg or borrow a copy.

Hi David,

I lost all my email addresses and lots of other bits and bobs when my hard drive went to the far east (as scrap) after it crashed. (OK OK, I know I should have backed up!) I can no longer use my old email address as I'm no longer with that ISP. Not sure how to get my new one to you.
