alpine_saint Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Why not send the poor sod back to Fiorentina if you dont intend to use him in any meaningful role, Mr. Pardew ?
Deanovski Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 wasted talent imo, we played better when he started and antonio and he came on.
SuperSAINT Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Papa is still why we're in the JPT! I have a feeling we'll need him before the season is out.
team-saint Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 He is a class above any of our current lot. Antonio has his moments but is much better from the bench.
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Would like to see Papa start vs Stockport. Maybe even up front with Barnard as Rickie definitely looks like he needs a rest.
austsaint Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Got to agree with Alpine on this one - surely Papa has shown enough flair and speed to be included and featured more often. He seems to have been overlooked by AP since the Leeds game.
stsam Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Yep..Im confused as well about this one. Esp as Antonio is a loanee, whereas I believe weve got an option on Papa. Yes, hes a bit raw (as is Antonio), but he showed enough to be worthy of more playing time than hes currently getting.
ALWAYS_SFC Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 And the next time he plays he wil get slagged off for being offside a lot... Then the will complain about some other player not playing...yawn

Antonio is out of contract in the summer, so we can get him in free if he wants to stay here. I agree with the Waigo start, Bonio off the bench philosophy.

Antonio's loan has been extended until the end of the season and his Reading contract expires in the summer. Seeing as they were happy to let him play with us even though they've been struggling all season (FA Cup excepted!), I'd be surprised if they offer him a new contract and I'd also be surprised if we don't try to sign him permanently.
benjii Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 A question I can't figure out the answer to. Our best bet on the wing and our best bet to partner Lambert in games like tonight's IMO.
Junior Mullet Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Pardew tends to prefer Papa when we play the 4-5-1/4-3-3 variations rather than in the 4-4-2 where he prefers Antonio.
SamKimish Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 He is currently top scorer in the JPT IIRC?
hypochondriac Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 I agree with Alpine here. He really should be starting. He is quality.
Saint_clark Posted 26 January, 2010 Posted 26 January, 2010 Antonio was fantastic for us V MK Dons and did a good job when he came on V Ipswich. If he had been dropped and Waigo had done nothing today, people would have been asking why Antonio was dropped.

shurlock Posted 27 January, 2010 Posted 27 January, 2010 Papa's pace and awareness would allow us to play 4-4-2 in a way we can't at the moment. Rather than going to RM should start up top with Lambert.
JustMike Posted 27 January, 2010 Posted 27 January, 2010 lol at some on here, when he was starting, he was slagged off now he isnt starting people want him to start! oh how i love football

saints_is_the_south Posted 27 January, 2010 Posted 27 January, 2010 Don't understand why he's not starting more, scored twice against Norwich & then against Exeter on boxing day but since then he seems to have been frozen out.
shurlock Posted 27 January, 2010 Posted 27 January, 2010 By Pards own admission, we've got lots of games coming up and will need to rotate players - there's potentially no better time to play Papa. Then we'll know if Pards really rates him. My hunch is that he'll start against Stockport.

Exactly correct. Waigo is similar to Lallana and in a 4-5-1 they compliment each other's play and it works. If we play 4-4-2 then both of them should not be picked IMO.
miserableoldgit Posted 27 January, 2010 Posted 27 January, 2010 Football nowadays is a squad game. It is not always about "the best 11" starting a game. The manager will pick the eleven players + subs, that will fit into whatever system that he thinks will win games appropriate to the opposition. We can disagree with his selections (one of the beauties of football - debate/discussion/opinions) but he is paid to get the best out of THE SQUAD. This coupled with the amount of games being played must come into consideration. I happen to greatly enjoy watching Waigo and would like to see more of him but we have to assume ( Until he proves differently!!) that AP knows what he is doing. I certainly don`t think that sending him back to Fiorentina because he is not playing every game is the answer.

My lad was mascot last night, and when we went in the dressing room before the game the music blasting out from the system was from Papa Waigo's Ipod. Maybe this is why we are keeping him on, it was african dancing music which had all the lads bounching around.

I suspected Papa would start last night, given his recent lack of action compared to the team's packed schedule. I suspect he may start on Saturday if Lambert is put on the bench. NickG Posted 27 January, 2010 Posted 27 January, 2010 I prefer him to Antonio. More creative and works deceptively hard.

.comsaint Posted 27 January, 2010 Posted 27 January, 2010 NickG said: I prefer him to Antonio. More creative and works deceptively hard. On saturday (against Stockport) - we ought to play both! Papa up front alongside Barnard (giving Lambo a much-needed rest & a place on the bench) & Antonio wide right. I'd pay double the ticket price to see that!
Deanovski Posted 27 January, 2010 Posted 27 January, 2010 lambert hasnt scored in a little while has he?
John B Posted 27 January, 2010 Posted 27 January, 2010 It is like the grass is greener over there scenario because we are playing well at the moment we think different players would produce better results who knows but that said I dont understand why Waigio only comes on for five mins seems scarcely fair
eesti matty Posted 27 January, 2010 Posted 27 January, 2010 Deanovski said: lambert hasnt scored in a little while has he? He hasn't scored for three games. I do think he needs a rest, but the fact that we're noticing when he doesn't score for two or three games shows what kind of season he is having. Even when he is not scoring, he leads the line well and weighs in with his fair share of assists. Having said that, he has looked a bit jaded recently. He'll be fired up for this weekend to score against Stockport.

surrey1saint Posted 27 January, 2010 Posted 27 January, 2010 I like Papa.I think he should start for Stockport game, with Barnard. Rickie on the bench.
Singeon Sears Posted 27 January, 2010 Posted 27 January, 2010 I think pardew has done well so far, like all managers one or two decisions baffle the fan. Gillett is one, if he is good enough for a championship midfield? Is it height, tactical, I don't know. The other is Papa who for me has more ability that most in this league if used correctly. His class shows through in one on ones with the keeper where he normally scores. I went to a game with a "neutral" football fan earlier in the season who said Papa was the best player on the pitch - and i agreed. Better up front than wide for me though.

macthesaint Posted 27 January, 2010 Posted 27 January, 2010 I would have like Papa to come on earlier last night as Antonio had run out of steam.

Chez Posted 27 January, 2010 Posted 27 January, 2010 Papa is a striker in my opinion and should play down the middle. He can do a decent job as a winger, but certainly not a right midfielder in a 4-4-2. A few offsides and Pardew seems to have lost all confidence in him. Very strange. AP also doesn't seem to be able to pick a side without Lambert. He didn't trust Paterson to replace him, and he didn't trust Barnard to play with Waigo when Lambert looked tired.
Dr Who? Posted 27 January, 2010 Posted 27 January, 2010 Quote Would like to see Papa start vs Stockport. Maybe even up front with Barnard as Rickie definitely looks like he needs a rest. Agreed, Lambert needs a rest as we have been playing on some really heavy looking pitches in the last few away games. Barnard needs to play and needs to get off of the mark quickly, and I think the goals will flow. What is up with Connolly, is it old problems as he looks like he would score for fun if he could stay fit, and when he arrived and when he is involved we have won most of our games.

Agreed, think Waigo is an potentially a very decent player for us if he was actually given a proper run in the team. Would like to see him start upfront with Lambert possibly if we are going to play a 4-4-2. Woulddn't mind seeing what his goal ratio is against actual minutes on the pitch played, must be pretty good for a winger who has had occasional run-outs.

Just chill instead of trying to get a personal dig in.
